A. Text comprehension
Happiness is a mental or emotional state of well-being defined by positive or
pleasant emotions of contentment and intense joy. A variety of psychologists,
religious men, philosophers, and authors have tried to define what "happiness" is and
identify its sources. A widely discussed political value expressed in the United States
Declaration of Independence of 1776, written by Thomas Jefferson, is the universal
right to "the pursuit of happiness."
The first ever International Day of Happiness was launched in 2013. The
International Day of Happiness (known as Happiness Day) is celebrated throughout
the world in March, and it was founded in 2012 by the United Nations General
Assembly when all 193 member states unanimously adopted UN resolution 66/281
which declared the 20 of March as the International Day of Happiness to recognise
happiness as a universal fundamental human goal.
The history of this event was the result of the effort of United Nations adviser
Jayme Illien who conceptualized the idea for a U.N. Resolution that would recognize
the pursuit of happiness as a human right. Thirty two years before founding the
International Day of Happiness, he was an orphan rescued from the streets of
Calcutta India, and later adopted by a then forty five year old single white American
woman named Anna Belle Illien who brought him up in America. The quest for
happiness was theorized as a serious matter with this poor boy who agitated for
happiness to be given greater priority.
