Introduction
In Q3’2013 VMware started the End-of-Life process for VMware vCloud Director (vCD). The
default path forward for vCloud Director customers is vRealize Automation (vRA).

While vRealize Automation has many compelling capabilities that vCloud Director never had,
there are also important specific use cases of vCD which vRealize Automation cannot satisfy
currently. The most important of those use cases is the need for “High”1 multi-tenancy and the
Lab Manager use case. It may also be that vCD customers have made a deep investment into the
product and they simply need more time beyond the EOS date of vCD 5.5 in Sept 2017 to retire
the software before they can move to vRA. A good example for this situation may be that
customers built applications, which are relying on the vCD API’s.

In those situations it may make sense to provide a specific version of vCD, i.e. vCD SP, to
enterprise customers. This version of vCD is otherwise available to Service Providers via the
VMware Cloud Provider Program.

Every vCD 5.5 enterprise customer, upon their request for vCD SP, can convert vCD 5.5
licenses to vCD SP, using the process described below before the end of this process in
September 2017.

It is important to note that vCD is EOL’ed and that vCD SP is not an option to circumnavigate
this decision:

1) vCD SP supports the VMware Cloud Provider environment stack, but customers might
use other stacks, which are not supported. Please review the vCD SP interoperability
matrix to identify if the customer stack is supported by vCD SP:
http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/products/vCloud-Director-SP-Interop-Matrix.pdf

2) vCD SP is part of the Cloud Provider service offering or part of the service offerings by
VMware Cloud Provider Program partners. The product roadmap and R&D investments
are geared towards the service provider customer segment and it is not focused on the
needs of enterprise customers

Those limitations need to be weighed carefully by the account team / customer before a decision
to move to vCD SP is being made.

This document describes the standard vCD EOL process. It then describes the process to provide
enterprise customers with vCD SP vs. vRA.

vCD

Standard vCloud Director End-Of-Life (EOL) process
VMware announced the End of Availability of vCloud Director 5.1 as a standalone product on
9/19/2013 and the End of Availability of vCloud Director 5.5 as part of the vCloud Suite on
3/12/2015.

As a result, all versions of vCloud Director were removed from the VMware price list, with the
exception of vCloud Director versions available to Service Providers through the VMware
VMware Cloud Provider Program. Per VMware’s Life Cycle policy, support and maintenance
for vCloud Director 5.1 ended on 9/10/2014, and support and maintenance for vCloud Director
5.5 will continue through the published support period of 9/19/2017.

With the EOL of vCloud Director, VMware has made a strategic portfolio decision: vRealize
Automation takes over the role vCloud Director had previously held to move customers from
virtualization to the cloud.

Customers who had bought vCD as part of the vCloud Suite already own vRA as part of the
vCloud Suite entitlement, provided they are on support.

Process to provide vCD SP to customers

There are two situations:
• Existing vCD 5.5 customers would like to get vCD SP
• Customers would like to purchase more licenses of vCD SP

There is the need for a different process depending on the respective situation.

Process for existing vCD 5.5 customers to obtain vCD SP

Existing vCD 5.5 customers with active SnS can request a conversion of their vCD 5.5 license to
a vCD SP license. They will be entitled to vCD SP at no cost (i.e. $0 orders). vCD SP is
available per CPU (vCD SP 8/8.x and later). The vCD SP CPU’s need to be deployed on vCloud
Suite licensed CPU’s.

Any residual SnS will be included in the $0 order. Enterprise customers will pay for 1 or 3 year
Basic or Production SnS on renewal.

The following process applies: The account team fills in the “VMware vCloud Director
Conversion Acknowledgement”, which can be found below, obtain the customer signature,
and submit the form to CSO@vmware.com for fulfillment.

Process for existing vCD SP customers to purchase additional vCD

SP licenses

All vCD SP enterprise customers can purchase additional licenses of vCD SP at $3,750/CPU (for
vCD SP 8/8.x and later) in the future, as long as vCD SP is available for purchase via the
VMware Cloud Provider program.

All enterprise customers, who own a perpetual license of vCD SP need to sign up for mandatory
1 or 3 year Basic or Production SnS for the additional license purchase.

The following process applies:

1. The account team requests an exception on behalf of their customer via the
“VCDTransition@vmware.com” e-mail distribution list

2. The account team starts the manual SPF process via the GEO Deal Desk to obtain
approval. The SPF request will need to be done outside of ModelN on the manual SPF
form and all required information should be populated on the SPF along with a business
justification. Approvals will be based on discounts being applied.

Appendix
Multi-tenancy in vCD and vRA

Even though vRA delivers a robust set of multi-tenancy capabilities that meet the needs of most
enterprise customers, some larger companies, service providers and enterprise customers
behaving like service providers, require complete autonomy between tenants i.e. they require
high multi-tenancy provided only by vCD SP.

vRealize Automation provides tenant specific branding, user authentication and email
services. For consumers within a tenant there is complete separation of users, resources and
services available i.e. vRealize Automation provides complete isolation of resources between
tenants.

However, some of the resource policies and other miscellaneous policies in vRA are not tenant
specific. Tenant administrators have visibility into the policies of other tenants. While this is
typically no problem for different groups in the same company, cross tenant visibility can
represent security vulnerabilities for cloud providers who need complete autonomy between their
customers.

Customers who require strict isolation between tenants for any of the policies listed below should
either stay on vCD 5.5 or more to vCD SP2:

Related reservation sub-policies

• Reservation Policy – Define the service level or attribute of a reservation
• Storage Reservation Policy - Define a service level or attribute of a storage data path
• Network Profiles - A pool of IP addresses to be used in Static IP address assignment NSX
service attributes (external network profile, Transport Zone, Routed Gateway)

Miscellaneous Policies
• Machine prefixes – a list of valid machine name prefixes
• Property Dictionary – custom property – with range of values
• Build Profiles – a group of custom properties

This list covers vSphere only since vCD does not support endpoints such as Amazon AWS
