BRANCH CAMPUS MALAYSIAN INSTITUTE OF
CHEMICAL & BIOENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY Date: 05/05/2017
Approved by:
This course is aimed at providing students with the understanding of basic principles
and fundamentals in chemical reaction kinetics, types of reactor and its design
characteristics, and heterogeneous reactions. This knowledge is vital since students will
use these fundamentals in applications of chemical engineering technology.

9. Learning Outcomes:
1. Design chemical reactors for isothermal and non-isothermal processes. (C5, P3)
2. Solve problems related to chemical reactions based on the fundamental concepts.
(C4)
3. Follow procedures accurately and conduct experiments safely. (P3)
10. Transferable skills
Teaching and learning will be via lecture, tutorial and practical. Students will also be
required to do their own self-study either through guided questions or mini project.
12. Synopsis
This course covers the introduction to reaction engineering basic concepts such as mole
balance, conversion, reactor sizing, rate laws and stoichiometry. In addition, students
will be exposed to theories and knowledge in isothermal and non isothermal reactor
design, collection and analysis of rate data. The topic also covers multiple reaction
conditions and heterogeneous reaction.
