Course Description & Objectives

Strategic management is an inherently integrative activity within a firm. It integrates all
functions of business such as accounting, human resource, marketing, finance, and
information systems. Strategic management encompasses all efforts to understand threats
and opportunities in a firm’s competitive environment and to interpret the competitive
implications of the firm’s organizational strengths and weaknesses. It forces managers to
bring their skills and expertise of the different business functions together to achieve and
sustain competitive advantage.
This course is designed and developed to provide you with frameworks and strategic
options to direct your company to gain its (sustained) competitive advantages. The course
is built on an assumption that good strategy making and good strategy implementation are
the key ingredients of the company success and the most reliable signs of good
management. Throughout the course, you will be learning concepts and techniques of
strategic management and applying the knowledge in analyzing cases. I intend to ask you to
think strategically and analytically about companies and their problems. In addition, you
will be asked to conduct many strategic analyses and develop strategic plans for strategy
implementation. The course is intended as a learning and practice field with your instructor
and colleagues as your sparring partners.
Upon completion of the course, students are to possess the ability to
1. think strategically about a company and its strategic position (diagnostic skill),
2. have skills in conducting strategic analysis in a variety of industries and competitive
situations (analytical skill),
3. make sound strategic decisions,
4. be more conscious about the importance of ethical principles, values, and socially
responsible management practices.

Learning Method
To educate is to invite students to think and to prepare their own framework from that they
can learn more when they encounter a new experience. An interesting educational process,
to me, is that from which both students and the teacher get a richer context. Consequently,
this method requires a thorough preparation before class.
Definitely, I will not lecture you from time to time. As we emphasize on the development of
oral and written skills in this course, my role is to facilitate discussions. I will use cases to
introduce, illustrate, and discuss the key issues of strategic management. In every class,
each of you will be an active discussant.
Your group is to submit a case report for every case assigned. Your report should not be any
longer than five pages of text plus exhibits. Please do not just restate the facts of the case;
you are to present the problem(s), your reasonings, case evidence, and your conclusion and
recommendations. Each case is to be presented before class.

You are to write a business story from strategic perspective for an actual company. During
the semester, you should follow your company of choice and try to make sense of its
strategic steps. Based on the study, your group should set up a descriptive analysis that
includes strategy, strategic plans, and implementation plans. Please do not forget to be
aware of the company’s strategic vision and its strategic and financial objectives. The
assignment will be due on the day of the 13th session of the class and will be presented in
the last two sessions.
Plagiarism is a serious offence and will lead to disciplinary actions. Please refer to the MM
Program standard regarding this matter.
There will be a quiz every once in a while. The quiz covers the text rather thoroughly and
requires careful reading and good comprehension of the material. Again, preparation before
class is a must.
