A little over fourteen years ago I retired after 18 plus years as your Director of Missions and wrote my last “A Personal Word” for The Montgomery Baptist newsletter. Now at the invitation and encouragement of our dear friend Neal Hughes, I am delighted to share one more “Personal Word.” I have so enjoyed reading and hearing reports of our Lord’s blessings on your churches and especially the cooperative work through the Montgomery LOWNDESBORO BAPTIST association. I applaud the innovative and energetic work of your staff under CHURCH Neal’s direction, the updated logo, use of “The River Region” to define INVITES YOU TO your local mission field, and so much more. Contemplating the future God COME AND CELEBRATE has for you is encouraging indeed. 165 YEARS Barbara and I moved back to Birmingham to be closer to our five (soon-to- be six) grandchildren, but before long, daughter Alisa and husband took OCTOBER 14, 2018 their four children and headed off to Atlanta. So much for moving close to 11 AM CELEBRATION your grandchildren! But thanks to granddaughter Maegan, we now have two LUNCH PROVIDED AT NOON great granddaughters to help spoil. After all, little ones are more fun than 21 BROAD ST. NORTH teenagers anyway! LOWNDESBORO The Lord has blessed me with numerous opportunities for continued REV. JAMES GREENE, PASTOR ministry in these “retirement years.” The Birmingham Baptist Association asked me to serve part-time as director of leadership development for a couple of years and then for six months as interim executive director. The privilege of being an interim pastor of four churches (two twice) for a total of eight years has been a special blessing. Barbara, my devoted helpmate for 61 years, was with me most of that time. After bidding a tearful farewell at the closure of one of those interims to dear friends for the umpteenth time she said, “This is too painful. You go where the Lord leads you but I’ve got to settle somewhere.” We joined Vestavia Hills Baptist where I am now a deacon and teach occasionally. Finally, you will never know the depth of my gratitude for your prayerful support this year, accompanied by hundreds of cards, calls and emails as I battled Mantel Cell Lymphoma. The side effects of four months of strong chemo, though not fun, were relatively mild. The cancer is currently in remission, my hair is growing back and strength is gradually returning. May the Lord be praised. Buddy McGohon
