GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Model 303 Broadband Mixer LS designed ior use as the RF lront end of the CW:3hmall Models CE-3 and
CE-7 FM CommunicatlOns Monitors when checkmg luo:..:al transmitters lH the frequency ranges of 20 10 80 MHz,
120 to 180 MH2) and 450 to 512 MHz with the CE-3 and 20 to 1150 MHz with the CE-7,

The Model 303 is inserted intu an opening tn the front panel of the CE-3 or CE-7; all electrical connections,
except the RF input) are made by a plug at the Tear of the unit which mates with a receptade in the Monitor.

Signals in any ot thE: three frequency ranges are converted to a lO-MHz LF. signal in the Model 303< The
local-oscillator input for the frequency cunversion is a slgnal trom the Monitor whose frequency is pl'ecisely
set to produce a 10-MHz output from the Model 303 when the received sig-nal is exactly on the frequency "dialed-
in" on the CE-3 Monitor, Then, any errOr of the received-signal frequency will appear as an error 01 the same
magnitude in the Broadband Mixer output.

A switch on the front panel of the Model 303 enables the operator to choose either narrow-band LF. to

reduce adjacent-channel interference when necessary) or a normal LF. bandWIdth to pass the full spectrum of
the received SignaL SpecIficatIOns of the Model 303 are glVen in Table 1-1,

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

The tront-paliel controls and connectors shown in Fig:urt 2-1 are described in Table 2-1. To place the
Broadband Mixer in a llurrnalvperatlOn with the CE-3. or CE-7, pl'0ceed as follows:

1. Insert the Model 303 into the opening in the right-hand side of the Monitor front-panel and turn the
LOCK knolJ on tht Model 303 front panel clockwise until it is finger-tight.

2. Connect the Monitor telescopmg antenna, Or the 50-ohm caLle trom an external antenna, to the ANT.
connector on the Model 303 front panel.

3. TUrn the SELECTIVITY switch to NORMAL

NOTE

The complete <.:ontenl of the received signal will be delivered to the

Monitor when the SELECTIVITY switch is in the NORMAL position;
however J H It is desired to make frequenc;y measurements in the
presence of adjacent-channel interierent:e, the SELECTIVITY swltch
should be turned to SHARP. In the SHARP position, the CE-3 LF.
bandwidth is narrowed to the extent that the absolutt: accuracy of the
deviation displayed on either the Deviation Meter Or the Oscilloscope
may be slightly degraded; therefore, the SHARP position should be
used only when required by adjacent-channel incerference.

4. Place the Monitor in operation in tht FREQ,-DEV. MEASURE mode, and set its frequency selector
switches to the frequency of the 8i>:1,'nal to be measured.

5. Proceed with normal monitoring operations, as described in the CE-3 or CE-7 manual.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

Figure 3-1 is a bluck diagram of thE:: Broadband Mixer. The signal who::;e f.requency is to be measured is
fed in through the ANT. connector un the Model 303 tHJllt panel to mixer CRl. The local-uscillatur (LO) input to
CRI comes from the Frequency Synthesizer iii the CE-3 or from the LO ili the CE-7. The CE-3 LO input always
contains a frequency in the range of 460.000 to 501.999 MHz. III addition, for the receiver band of 20 to 80 MHz,
a 430-MHz frequency 18 present in the LO input; and for the receiver uand 01 120 to 180 MHz, a 330-MHz fre-
quency is pl-esent. Table 3-1 summarizes the irequencies present in the LO input fOr various settings of the
CE-3 frequency selector SWitches.

A!:3 an example of the operatiuu with the CE-3, ai:ii:>UIHe that the CE-3 frequency selector switches are set to
mouitor a transmitter in the 20-80 MHz band. Although the two LO Signals are mixed simultaneously with the
received slgnal in mixer diude CRl, it is helpful in understanding,' the arithmetic of the procei:is to consider the
operation as consistutg or tW0 separate mixmg- actions. Cunsider first the mixlng actlOn between the 430-MHz
fixed frequency (1' f ) and the variable trequency (fv) front the Frequency Synthesizer (see Table 3-1). This will
producee a difference fl'equew:y in [he range of 30.000 tu 69.999 MHz. Next, consider the mixing of this signal
(£1) with the re(;eived signal (fin)' The result ul this mixing action is a 10-MHz LF. signaL

When the nlunitured frequency is in the range uf 120 to 11)0 MHz, the fixed frequency is 330 MHz, and a
10-1I1Hz LF. ag'ain results. When the mOllHored frequency is in the 450-512 MHz band, no fixed-frequency LO
iuput i.s u::;ed. The resulting difference frequency between the LO variable frequency and the received Signal is
again 10 MHz.

When lhe Model 303 is used with the CE-7, [he LO input to the Model 303 is a frequency that is 10 MHz away
from the frequem;y being monitored oy the CE-7. This LO frequency is generated in the CE-7 by a crystal oscil-
lator operatl14S in the range 01 6.2 MHz tv 9.4 MHz followed by a harmonic amplifier and step-recovery diode.
The l;rystal selected fur monitoring a given challnel ha::; a frequency which, when multiplied by the harmonic
amplifier, produces the required LO input to the Model 303. The 10 MHz signal required for calibration is also
generated by a crystal oscillator.

In the NORMAL position of the SELECTIVITY switch, the lO-MHz output of the mixer is led directly into LF.
amplifiers ICI, Q2, Q3; andQ4, and from there to the second mixer in the Monitor. The l.F. bandwidth in this
position of the switch is the full bandwidth 01 the I.F. amplifier, which is approximately 75 kHz. In the SHARP
lJof::lition of the SELECTIVITY switch, the mixeJ:' output 18 first ied through a crystal filter, which reduces the
bandwidth tu 13.5 kHz.

The output of the LF. amplifier is also fed Lhrough emitter follower Ql to detectur CR7,. which pruduces a de
voltage proportional tu the amplifier uf the l.F, signaL The output 01' CR7 is delivered through de amplifier IC2
to the signal level detector in the Munitor.

In the CW, CAL., and FM uperaung mudes 0f the Monitor, it is necesf::lary to introduce a 10-MHz Signal into
the LF. chanueL This signal is applied to the input of Q3, as shown in Figure 3-2.

NOTES: L All frequencies are in MHz.

2. The last four dlgits of the dialed-in frequeney are the sallit as the last 10ur dlgits of the LO
variable frequency.
3. As shown in the table, f1 is sometimes 10 MHz higher than fin and sometllnes 10 MHz lower.
ThiS is compensated for by the FREQUENCY rueter reversmg relay in the CE-3 (see
Section 4.3.2 of the CE-3 manual).

As shown in the sehematic dtagram, Figure 3-2, the LO signalls fed directly to the cathode of mixer diode
CRl, and the reeeived sig11al it:; fed to the mixer dwde through a high-pa~s tilter consisting of C45, C46, and Ll3
(to eliminate broadcast-station interference) and a IO-MHz rejection iiltBr- conSIsting of LI, C1, C2, and C3. The
mixer uutput is diude-switched, either through the crystal filter 0r around It depending on the position of the
SELECTIVITY switeh. Both integrated-circuit amplifier ICI and commun-base amplifier Q2 are fixed-tuned to
10 MHz. The output uf Q2 and the 10-MHz input from the Mvnitor (iIi the CW, FM, and CAL. modes) are fed to
the emitter of common-base amplifier Q3, which in tUTn drives Q4. Both Q3 and Q4 are tuned to 10 MHz. The
lO-MHz output at the collector of Q4 is fed to pin 7 on the plug-in COlluectur, and abo thr()ugh emitter follower
Ql to detector CR7. The de output of the detector iE> amplified by IC2, the gain of which is c()lltrolled by squelch
adjust potentiometer R32. The output of IC2 is fed to the signal level dete(;t()r in the Monitur thruugh pin 3 of the
plug-in cOlmector.

SECTION 4

SIGNAL LEVEL LIGHT ADJUSTMENT

Th e signal lev el at which the CE-3 SIGNAL LEVEL light comes on is a djustable (Ste Figure 4-1) by the
pote nt iome te r (R32) located at the luwe r r ight- hand side of the Broadba nd 'M ixer. With the Model 303 in stalled
ill au operating Mo nitor J the adjustment i s made in the iollowing way:

1. Connec t the OUl put vf a signal generatol' (Hew le tt-Packard Model 608 or equivalent) to the ANT. con-
nector of the Broadband MLx€r . Adjust the signal generator for a medium output level at a frequency of 10 MHz

2. 'furll the Model 303 SELE CTIVITY switch to NORIvlAL.

3. On the Monitor fl'ont panel , tur n the iUllction switch to FREQ. - DEV MEASURE , and s et up a freq uency
whose [il'st two digits are 4 and 0, r espec tive ly (the remaining digit s may be a nything). The frequency d isplay
lights on the C E-3 s hould be flashing at thi s se lti ng.

4. Adjust the signal gen~ rator output level to p.roduc.:e 60 milliv ult~ at pin 7 of the Broadband Mixer con-
nec t or when measured with a high-impedance voltmeter probe. T he connector is located at the rear of the
Broadband Mixer , just abov e t he CE -3's coaxial r e lay.

5. Starting with th e adjustment potentiometer fully counter clockwise, turn it slowly clockwise until the
SIGNAL LEVEL light just comes on.

4-1
SECTION 5

MIXER DIODE CHECK

After thE: SIGNAL LEVEL lig'ht has been adjusted as described above, it should come on whenever the RF
input at the ANT. connector is 10 millivolts or greater, for any trequency below 512 MHz covered by the Monitor
and with the function switch 1Il the FREQ.-DEV. MEASURE position. If the SIGNAL LEVEL light will not come
on under these cunditions, check the mixer diode, eRl, in the Model 303< Its forward resistance should be
appr0ximately 10 ohms, and its reverse resistam:e should be approximately 70k ohms.
