Reverse Engineering:

Remote Control

By Aaron Simon, Addie Seymour, Tara Shotz, and Ashley Smith

Purpose

● To create a set of diagrams that would allow a

person to reassemble the control from parts
● To find how the remote control functions
● To gather information and analyze the object
Hypotheses

● Uses radio waves to communicate

● Moving sticks creates connections on a circuit board
○ Different connection depending on direction
● Pushing the trigger down also creates connection
Results

● Created blueprints for entire control

○ One large blueprint, others for minor systems
Materials
● Shell- plastic ● Circuit Board- Resistors,
copper foil, plastic
● Wires- copper
● LED’s
● Trigger mechanism- aluminum
● Battery
● Screws- metal

Capacitor Values Resistor Resistances
C1: 22pF R1: 24kΩ
C2: 101pF R2: 4.6kΩ
C3: 10pF R3: 410Ω
C4: 7pF R4: 100Ω
C5: 104pF R5: 390Ω
C6: 104pF R6: 3.3kΩ
R7: 10Ω

Inductor Values The transistors are labeled

L1: 2.1µH C945 P908. The first 2 diodes
L2: 2.2µH are labeled 41 48 ST.
The chip

● Connections made by
sticks/trigger lead to the chip
● The chip takes the inputs,
processes, and decides what to
transmit to the receiver
How Does It Work?

● The remote control sends radio waves to the receiver (toy)

● The antenna and a circuit board inside the toy car receives the signals
sent by the transmitter (remote)
● The signals activate the motor of the car
● Resistors regulate currents, they all have different resistance levels
● When the sticks are moved, they create a connection on the circuit
board, which is transmitted to the chip, which decides what signal to
send to the receiver
● In the end, our hypothesis ended up proving to be correct.
