Helping Others Break Free

Takin’ It to the Streets | Sat., August 16 | 2–6 | Oakridge Neighborhood
PM

By Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries

The messages in both of our worship services this morning
focused on the power of God to help us break free of spiritual
strongholds and live joyful lives as children of the King! As a
believer in Jesus, you have blessings beyond compare. Unfortu-
nately, not all share in these riches—spiritually or practically.
Helping others experience the blessings of being part of God’s
family is the ultimate goal of our Takin’ It to the Streets activi-
ties. On Saturday, August 16, 2–6PM, we will have an opportunity
to do this, reaching out to the Oakridge neighborhood. Similar to
last year, we will join with several other churches in a joint effort
to share the love of
God through a Back
to School Celebra-
tion. This event will
include food, fun,
opportunities to build
relationships, and
several planned oc-
casions to clearly tell
about Jesus.
As you may
remember from last
year’s event, Oakridge
is a low-income hous-
ing complex near Methodist Hospital. One hundred percent of the
residents receive housing assistance. Among the 1000+ residents
of Oakridge, 60% are children, and 98% of the Oakridge fami-
lies are headed by a single parent. Of these residents, 49% are
African American, 19% are Vietnamese, Cambodian & Laotian,
and 13% are African— from Sudan, Ghana, and Liberia.
A highlight of this year’s outreach is that we will be providing
backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies for the
children of Oakridge. This is a wonderfully practical way to help
meet the needs of the most needy in our community.
Another goal of the outreach is for you to be able to participate
by meeting the residents of Oakridge and establishing a relation-
ship with at least one resident. In your development of an ongoing
relationship with a resident of Oakridge, you will help create a
basis in which we can offer additional activities to residents on a
continual basis. It is this type of ongoing relationship that will po-
sition us to truly help those who live at Oakridge break free from
their strongholds and be open to trusting in Jesus for eternal life.
