media on body image dissatisfaction." Journal of Eating Disorders, vol. 3, no. 1, July

2015. Health Reference Center Academic,

This article discusses how people think a lot more about their self presentation in social

media. Cohen emphasized that people manipulate their profiles to conform to societal

ideals. This article supports my argument that due to the influence of social media, it

influences the way people present themselves to the world. People begin to present

themselves in accordance to what society’s ideals are.

Perloff, Richard M. “Social Media Effects on Young Women's Body Image Concerns:

Theoretical Perspectives and an Agenda for Research.” Sex Roles, vol. 71, no. 11-12,

September 2018. This article discusses the effects of social media and how it changes the

perception of a female’s body and their self worth. Perloff concludes that social media

causes to negative comparison which leads to lowering female’s self esteem. This article

supports my argument about how social media is negatively affecting females causing

them to constantly compare themselves to others and need to satisfy their personal

reassurance needs. I wanted to use social comparison as my example due to the fact that

social media affects the way people show their identity.

Stronge, Samantha, et al. “Facebook Is Linked to Body Dissatisfaction: Comparing Users and

Non-Users.” Sex Roles, vol. 73, no. 5-6, Sept. 2015, pp. 200–213. EBSCOhost,

doi:10.1007/s11199-015-0517-6. Accessed 21 September 2018. This article focuses on

how social media effects body dissatisfaction. The article also discusses how social

media is a platform to implanting societal ideals. Stronge concludes that people are

assessing themselves and carefully selecting photos for their self presentation on social

media. Due to how people are being particular on what photos they post to show their

identity, I found this article to very well prove my argument on how social media affects

how we present our identity.
