Answer ALL the questions (10X2=20)

PART-A

1. Differentiate between Newtonian and Non-Newtonian fluids.

2. Define centre of buoyancy.
3. Explain the terms ‘meta centre’ and meta-centric height of a floating body.
4. Differentiate between local and convective acceleration.
5. What is meant by cavitation?
6. Define Surface Tension.
7. Define Compressibility and bulk modulus.
8. What is stability of floating body?
9. Write the continuity equation.
10.Define velocity potential function and stream function.

PART-B (3X10=30)

1. A rectangular plane surface 3 m wide and 4 m deep lies in water in such a

way that its plane makes an angle of 30⁰ with the free surface of water.
Determine the total pressure force and position of centre of pressure, when
the upper edge is 2 m below the free surface.
(OR)
2. A rectangular pontoon 10.0 m long, 7 m broad and 2.5 m deep weight 686.7
KN .It carries on its upper deck an empty boiler of 5.0 m diameter weighing
588.6 KN. The centre of gravity of the boiler and the pontoon are at their
respective centre along a vertical line. Find the meta-centric height. Weight
density of sea water is 10.104KN/m3.
3. A block of wood of specific gravity 0.7 floats in water. Determine the meta-
centric height of the block if its size is 2 m X 1m X 0.8 m.
(OR)
4. The velocity vector in a fluid flow is given: V= 4x 3i – 10x2yj + 2tk. Find the
velocity and acceleration of a fluid particle at (2, 1, 3) at time t=1.
5. A 30 cm diameter pipe, conveying water, branches into two pipes of
diameters 20 cm and 15 cm respectively. If the average velocity in the 30 cm
diameter pipe is 2.5 m/s, find the discharge in this pipe. Also determine the
velocity in 15 cm pipe if the average velocity in 20 cm diameter pipe is 2
m/s.

(OR)

6. A 25 cm diameter pipe carries oil of specific gravity 0.9 at a velocity of

3 m/s. at another section the diameter is 20 cm. find the velocity at this
section and also the mass flow rate of oil
