Design Project Guidelines

CE 511 (Structural Steel Design)

This design project is a mandatory course requirement for all students enlisted in this CE 511 class. This
course requirement aims to apply the analysis and design concepts learned in structural steel design in
the actual design of structures.

This project is to be done by groups of about 5-6 members each. Each group will select a structure to be
designed in the following list using structural steel:

Structure Required Features

- Has minimum capacity of 5,000 people
- Has a multipurpose court for sports such as basketball, volleyball, and other
indoor sports
Multipurpose Arena - May also hold other events such as concerts, exhibits etc.
- Has other facilities which can help enhance revenue generation of the
arena such as food stalls, stores etc.
- May also be utilized as an evacuation area in case of disasters/calamities
- May be used as a design proposal for PNR stations
Railway Station - Has revenue generating facilities such as food stalls, stores etc.
- Design should be optimized for passenger/commuter comfort
- Should have at least four floors
Hospital - Has minimum capacity of 600 beds
- Has optimal access for ambulances and other rescue vehicles
- Should have at least three floors
- Should have offices, faculty rooms, and other facilities such as library,
science laboratory, computer laboratory etc.
School Building
- Has minimum capacity of 400 students
- Designed for comfort and accessibility
- May also be utilized as an evacuation area in case of disasters/calamities
- Designed for households relocated from informal settling; may be used as a
design proposal for mass housing projects
- Should have at least 5 floors, one of which is the roof deck
Low-Cost High-Rise - Has minimum capacity of 100 4-member households
Housing - Has common facilities for use of residents such as recreational areas,
lounges etc.
- Has revenue generating facilities such as food stalls, stores etc.
- Design should be optimized for comfort and accessibility

Structures to be designed should have, aside from the listed features above, other facilities or features
that are usually present on those structures (e.g. for hospitals, should have an operating room, clinics,
ICUs etc.). Groups may also add other features which may be helpful on the functional capabilities of the
structure.

Submission of the project will be in two parts:

 Functional/Conceptual Design
o Includes the following:
 Proposed location of the structure
 Schematic diagrams of the structure, including perspectives and floor plans
 Facilities present on the structure
 Technical and economic feasibility of the structure (constraints and trade-offs),
including literature review of research related to design and construction
o Functional design of structure should adhere on applicable standards, codes, and laws
such as, but not limited to, NBCP (National Building Code of the Philippines), Fire Code
of the Philippines, Accessibility Code, DepEd Educational Facilities Manual etc.
o References on architectural planning and design may also be used.
o Submission of the draft functional/conceptual design will be on 29 August 2018, 7:30 PM.
Returning of drafts for revision will be on 3 September 2018.
o Submission of revised functional/conceptual design will be on 10 September 2018, 7:30
PM. No late submissions will be entertained.
o Details on formatting of report manuscript will be released on a later date.
o Soft copies of all files related to functional/conceptual design should be compiled on a CD
or DVD, including the e-copy of the revised report manuscript.
 Final Design
o Includes the following:
 Structural framework design of the structure (refer to the ASEP Checklist on
Structural Design Documents)
 Changes in functional/conceptual design of the structure (provided that there is
enough justification for the said changes)
 Blueprints of structural plans of the structure (use A3 paper for printing of the
plans)
o Final design should show not only the software inputs and calculations but also manual
calculations (either done using MS Excel, Mathcad, or hand calculations).
o Final design of the structure should adhere on applicable standards, codes, and laws
such as 2010/2015 NSCP, AISC Steel Construction Manual, AISC Steel Detailing Manual
etc.
o Submission of the draft final design will be on 5 October 2018, 7:30 PM. Copies of plans
should be in PDF format. Returning of drafts for revision will be on 10 October 2018.
o Submission of revised final design will be on 17 October 2018, 7:30 PM. No late
submissions will be entertained.
o Details on formatting of report manuscript will be released on a later date.
o Soft copies of all files related to final design should be compiled on a CD or DVD,
including the e-copy of the revised report manuscript and plans in DWG and PDF formats.
