Assessment
Upon successful completion:
1. Recognize the multiple ways safety information and procedures can be presented
2. Identify important elements which should be included in all safety procedures and
instructions

*This final assignment represents the summative assessment for the entire unit. Assignments
will be graded for official marks using the attached rubric. Data collected will be used to
evaluate effectiveness of lesson plan and teaching strategies*

Remediation: Any student who does not complete the assignment at the end of the second
class will have the chance to finish and hand in during the following class, but will be
penalized with a mark reduction of 10%

Modification/Accommodations
Schedule: Give students additional practice time
Setting: Working in group setting; One on one instruction with teacher; Allow for
assessment away from other students
Materials: Provide step by step instructions in writing; Tape demonstration for further
study; Provide map of classroom; Provide list of written rules
Assessment: Allow retake of quiz during the following class; Exit quiz can be read and
answered verbally if necessary

MINI ASSIGNMENT 2: LESSON PLAN 34
MAJOR ASSIGNMENT: UNIT OF STUDY 35

Reflection
My mini units first four lessons are all conducted in a very similar manner to allow for

students to develop a routine when it comes to their thinking about, and engagement in safety

practice instruction. Due to safety being the most critical element in a shop class it must be

continually reinforced during instruction to ensure students understanding of its importance.

Each lesson involves a mixture of lecture, presentation, demonstration, and hands-on activities

that allow for a variety of learning styles to be able to be active learners.

When it comes to assessment for each of these lessons a formative assessment approach

has been chosen in the form of a content-specific exit quiz. These formative quizzes are marked

and returned to students without the marks being part of their permanent evaluation. Aligned

with Growing Success’ ongoing assessment and feedback principles, these exit quizzes are

administered at the end of class to gauge student learning and knowledge retention. Quizzes are

returned to the student the following class so they can understand and reflect on how effective

their learning strategies have been. As shown on the lesson plan, students have the option of

completing the exit quiz verbally, this can include having the instructor or class helper read the

student questions, or the student can read the questions themselves but provide an answer

verbally. This allows for personalization of assessment shown in learning For All, as some

students may have difficulty reading or writing, and the option of an oral quiz will give them the

chance to convey their learning effectively.

The fifth and final lesson includes the summative assessment for the entire mini unit. The

basis of the unit is to introduce students to the dangers present in the shop, shop rules, and shop

safety procedures. The final summative assessment is about thinking of safety while in the shop

and being aware of what you should know about hazards. Because of this, the assignment was

allowed to be completed in a variety of formats (pamphlet, video, manual, or poster) to give each

students particular learning style and type of intelligence the chance to flourish by having a

personalized choice as mentioned in Learning For All. Essentially this has the student choosing

how they will be evaluated as different elements go into each format. Students who excel at

acting may choose the video option; Students who excel in art may choose the pamphlet or

poster, and students who prefer clean and concise written instructions may choose the manual.

Along with choosing the format, students can choose the content they will base their assignment

on. This option allows the student to pick something that they enjoy or may actually be interested

in researching more about, which increases student engagement and long-term learning.

The summative assignment may seem somewhat loose, as it truly has minimal

restrictions or limits, but that’s the beauty of it. As educators, we are there to educate and ensure

students actually learn something, not just put a mark on a page. Eliminating restrictions on the

summative assignment allows each student to flourish and provides the most legitimate

evaluation of learning possible.
