Big Idea: When creating fashion, you must consider the end user. The end user is
ultimately the person who will be buying your design. Who that person is,
what their needs are, and the intent of the fashion is vital to understand
what the end product will be.
Objective: You will be creating a design based on an “empowering” SAT word for a
specific person (end-user) that captures their personality and how they
need to be “empowered”. Careful consideration must be given to layout,
design concept, execution of design and craftsmanship.
Vocabulary:
● Empowering: (https://www.merriam-webster):
a. to give official authority or legal power to
- Empowered her attorney to act on her behalf
b. (Action) to promote the self-actualization or influence of
- women's movement has been inspiring and empowering women - Ron Hansen
● SAT list of words https://tnpec.org/Kaplan%20100%20SAT%20Words.pdf
● End User - Who the design is for.
● Elements & Principles (notes given to you already)
● Negative Space (ground or background) - The area(s) around the figure.
● Positive Space (figure) - The area the object takes up in space.
Directions:
1. Research Inspiration: Think of someone you know that has/had to display strong inner strength to
overcome strife or challenges in their lives. Be able to explain why you chose that person.
2. Research SAT: Find an SAT word that best describes the empowerment for that person. Make sure it
is the Emphasis.
3. Concept Design: Based on that person’s personality determine how best to represent who the person
is through the use of the Elements of Art and Principles of Design.
4. Composition: Create a project board of design. Artist Statement will be attached onto the board along
with the Croquis drawing. The SAT word and definition will be prominently displayed.
5. Layout Proximity: When glueing down project components, make sure you also look at the negative
space between and around the objects. Make sure SAT word is the Emphasis (think Rule of Thirds).
6. Craftsmanship Technique: Make sure all edges trimmed straight, glued down neatly (no smeared
glue), items are typed, color has been applied neatly.
7. Artist Statement - Format:
a. Use 16-18 font size and an easy to read font (no curvy or script lettering).
b. Use the default of 1.15 line spacing.
c. Use .5 margins for all sides. Trim bottom so it has a .5-inch margin.
8. Artist Statement - Content: Write a three (3) paragraph statement that describes.
a. Who the person is and why you wanted to create a design for them?
b. How was the SAT word of empowerment used to create a design that focused on the Elements
and Principles of Art and Design?
c. How does the final design compliment that person’s personality and empowers them?
