1.0 INTRODUCTION
INTRODUCTION

City of Mumbai, like any populous metropolis, depends a lot on rail commuting. The second metro
line and first underground metro corridor running through the heritage foreground of the city of
Mumbai shall be a busy one. Therefore, the spaces for passenger movement need to be considered
with outmost care.

The purpose of this presentation is to explore various options for the vertical movement of the
passengers extending the study to structural arrangement and its impact on the services.

3.0 SERVICES AT UNDERCROFT,
PLATFORM AND CONCOURSE CEILING
CENTRAL vs. STAGGERED: PROS AND CONS

CENTRAL PROS CONS

Services at • Central columns allow for services to run along • Space between escalator and
undercroft, the either sides of the space above false ceiling staircases is not available as floor
platform and along the concourse length. space.
concourse • Minimizes twists and turns to these services,
ceiling avoids obstructions which are due to vertical
elements viz. columns, lift shafts.
• 3-Bank option has only three cut-outs to avoid
for services passing thru concourse ceiling as
compared to four cut-outs in 4-Banks option

STAGGERED PROS CONS

Services at • The staggered columns obstruct the ECS ducts at platform
undercroft, ceilings.
platform and • The staggered columns limit the space at concourse ceilings.
concourse • At the undercroft level, the services have to dodge and turn
ceiling with this arrangement.

5.0 PASSENGER DYNAMICS
CENTRAL vs. STAGGERED: PROS AND CONS

CENTRAL PROS CONS

Passenger • The central column naturally bifurcates the • Space between escalator and

movement. space.
• Better visibility and wayfinding for passengers.
• The shadow space between and around the
columns can be used for waiting and seating.
• No inconvenience to differently abled persons
i.e. the tactile path provision is appropriate and
efficient.

STAGGERED PROS CONS

Passenger • Better visibility • Does not aid in adding system to passenger movement.
Dynamics from certain view • Visibility and wayfinding is adversely impacted at some
points. locations.
• Certain locations • Adverse impact on tactile path flow.
may aid • These columns do not contribute to shadow spaces for waiting
wayfinding. areas.
• The tactile pathways have to be further shifted towards main
passenger flow areas along platform screens due to staggered
columns on one side.

6.0 CONCLUSION
CONCLUSION

The benefits of staggered option are minimal. On the other hand, it severely
diminishes functional aspect and passenger flow and comfort. Additionally it
creates unsurmountable problems from a Structural and Services point of view.

As a result, the staggered column option is not feasible and our designs would
reflect the central column option only.
