Getting to Vals by Train and PostBus
The route through the mountains to Vals was a powerful
inspiration in his search for a formal vocabular y of architecture
Peter Zumthor writes in his book Therme Vals. This aspect of
the journey has become a ritual for many visitors who time and
again choose to come to the Vals Valley by train and PostBus.
The journey begins when the traveler boards a Rhaetian
Railway ( RhB) train in Chur. Just after the Rhine Plains near
Reichenau this rough-terrain, narrow-gauge railway (track
width: 1 meter) makes its way through the greatest rock slide
area of the Alps (volume: 15 km 3 ). There are no villages or
streets in this canyon; impressive engineering structures were
needed to build the railway through the compacted Mesozoic
limestone cliffs.
The train route follows the path of the Vorderrhein, which
has car ved its way through the fallen rock over the millennia.
This pristine canyon is called the Ruinaulta ( Rom. ruina = land -
slide + aulta = high). Washed out limestone pinnacles rise up
from the up to 350-meter-high white cliffs, alders and pines
cling to the concrete-gray scree fields, dead trees lie strewn
across gravel islands in the roiling river. In the U-shaped Vorder -
rhein glacial valley the train pulls into the little town of Ilanz,
where the PostBus stands waiting.
The road to Vals leads south, taking one through a land -
scape of soft-contoured Bündner schist to yet another valley.
On one half of this valley the mountainside is in constant motion,
the church in Peiden has wandered 16 meters downhill in the
last centur y. The scener y grows wilder, rock-slide and avalanche
shelters protect the road. Between St. Mar tin and Vals the valley
narrows to a steep ravine, jagged cliffs flank the road above
the Valserrhein. From here, one can see the cr ystalline, mineral-
rich gneisses of the Adula nappe. And suddenly the ravine
opens up onto a wide valley: end of the line. Vals.

Bathing at the Therme Vals is much more than merely dipping
into the waters of the only mineral hot springs in Grisons.
Anyone who has been here and experienced the water of
Vals at the unique thermal baths designed by Peter Zumthor
knows the difference and inevitably returns, sooner or later
finding his or her way back through the narrow, winding
mountain gorge.
“It is different ever y time,” a guest exclaims, beaming
enthusiasm. “The Therme Vals gives me a ver y personal sense
of revelation.” And it is true, the bathing experience at the
Therme Vals caters to the individual and is strongly influenced
by one’s own subjective perception. Peter Zumthor has
brilliantly created a world in which personal, introspective
impressions converge with objective beauty.
Bathing at the Therme Vals means immersion in design
perfection, in the velvety softness of soothing water, in the
pureness of clean mountain air, and in the tranquil, untamed
beauty of the Vals Valley, in a world of light and shadows. And Copyright © 2010 by Hotel Therme Vals and the authors
