8. PROTECTION

8.1. PAINT SYSTEMS • Relative motion: chromium plating of the steel part.
Parts not accessible to cadmium plating: phosphating, plus grease or
oil protection.
SURFACES TREATMENTS:
Stainless steels: no protection, except for contacts with other materials.
Aluminum alloys = The metal is generally electro chemically anodized
with Chromic Acid Anodizing (CAA) or with IN ADDITION:
Phosphoric Acid Anodizing (PAA) Clad parts in the
fuselage are treated with alodine 1200 or wash • All bonded parts are treated by phosphoric acid anodizing (instead of
primer (Chemical Conversion Coating - CCC). being only pickled as was common practice on last generation aircraft).

Titanium alloy = This totally corrosion resistant metal is not protected • The wing tanks are treated by chromic acid anodizing and painted
unless in contact with a different material and in this (primer loaded with chromate).

treated by sulfuric acid anodizing or ionic vapor
deposit processes.
Steel = Generally, cadmium plating.

FOR CONTACT SURFACES:

• No relative motion:
- Corrosion resistant steel/corrosion resistant steel: passivation,
- Alloy steel/alloy steel: cadmium plating,
- Steel/aluminum: cadmium plating of the steel part,
- Aluminum alloy/carbon fiber:
. glass fiber/kevlar/tedlar layer and primer on the carbon part,
. anodizing + primer on the aluminum alloy part,
. wet assembly of fasteners + interfay sealant.

8. PROTECTION

8.2. BASIC PROTECTION • Fuel tanks:


The primer of the fuel tanks is loaded with special chromate resistant on
• Paints used: micro-organism.
- Primer loaded with chromate for a better resistance to corrosion and
more especially to skydrol or fuel. The paint scheme to be applied after final assembly of the aircraft is:

- Polyurethane enamel with improved elasticity, which allows a better - on metallic surfaces:

- Internal zones = primer on all surfaces + enamel on parts exposed to
corrosive environment, which are: - on composite surfaces (on top of a pore-filler or tedlar foil):
. lower part of the fuselage, including rails and floor beams, . application of polyurethane primer,
. structure in the vicinity of hydraulic pipe routing in the wings, . application of anti-static paint (except for CFRP composites),
. structure below the toilet floor, . application of top coat (high flexible polyurethane),
. wing rear spar, . customer decoration (as required).
. vertical stabilizer rear spar and upper fin box area,
. around door frame + internal part of all doors, Additional erosion protection applied on radome, leading edge (wing, fin),
. nose and main landing gear bay, wing fuselage fairing, air intake...
. pressure bulkheads,
. fuselage areas under dorsal fin, under wing-to-fuselage fairing and WARNING: AFTER REPAINTING OF FLIGHT CONTROLS SURFACES
under L/G fairings. (RUDDER, ELEVATORS, AILERONS) PERFORM A

8.5. FUSELAGE BONDED AND CHEMICAL MILLED STRUCTURE

On ATR42 and ATR72 ST3, basically the fuselage panels in sections 13


and 16, up to MSN 402 have the following features :

• Tear straps are bonded at each frame location.


SECT. 13 (REFERENCE ONLY)
• Doublers are bonded around large cutouts (cargo, entry and service FRAME FRAME
doors cutouts as well as emergency exit cutouts). 13 23
• Surface bonding preparation is made with Phosphoric Acid Anodizing
process. Then a bonding primer is applied on the interior surfaces of
the bonded panels. Curing temperature = 120°C.
• After bonding, is applied a polyurethane primer on internal and
external surfaces.

From A/C MSN 403 (MOD. 3060 and 2934) these fuselage panels
become integrally chemically milled.
