HOMEWORK #1

**You might have to review the basic equations of solid mechanics either from the textbook for this class or solid
mechanics textbook. You can use the equations sheet in Sakai Resources as a reference**

Problem 1.1
Suppose you have to select materials for the door of your classroom. What will be the essential factors
you think you should consider for the material selection of the door? Express in terms of function,
constraints and objectives. (*Hint: Think of different parts such as main body of the door, knob or handle,
mountings containing spring and bearings for the automated closure of the door)

Problems Requiring CES

Familiarize yourself with CES EduPack 2018 available on AppsAnywhere and in the E-Calc labs before
attempting the following problems. The AppsAnywhere instructions, CES quick start guide, and links to
video tutorials are in the CES folder in Resources section on the Sakai site.

Problem 1.2
The UD MechE juniors have completed the solid mechanics course and, in this course, they studied
different types of beams. For practical experience once, the Professor decided to take the students to a
solid mechanics lab where they could see different types of beams under different loading conditions.
There one group of students saw a cantilever beam like Fig. (1.2), which was composed of two segments
with rectangular cross sections. The width of each section was 2 in., but the depths were different, as
shown in the figure. Now, as a student of MEEG321 course you are asked to calculate
a) Stress concentration factor (SFC) at point B, assume the minimum radius of curvature at point B
is is 0.125 in. (*Page 173 and 173 of the Textbook)
b) The bending moments and the bending stresses at point B and D of the beam if there is a load of
2000 lb at point A.
c) At what location the beam would fail first? Check if the point of maximum bending moment is
same as the point of maximum bending stress. If not describe the reason for this discrepancy.
d) Which material would be best for this loading condition to avoid failure? Explain your reasons why
it would be best. (Use CES software and select the lowest bound stress value to be conservative)

Problem 1.3
In CES EduPack, select the Level 1 database and use skills gained from the tutorial to find the following:

(a) The material with the highest yield strength

(b) The metal with the highest transparency

(c) The cheapest polymer

(d) The composite with the highest density

(e) The cheapest alloy

(f) The approximate range of modulus of elastomers

(g) The cheapest material with a modulus greater than 1 GPa.

Problem 1.4
Use the CES EduPack Level 2 database to create a bubble chart of the Thermal diffusivity (Thermal
conductivity/(density*Specific heat capacity)) vs. Cost for all materials. Label the three best and three
worst performing classes of materials on the chart, and describe one use of each of these. (Print out your
graph to hand-in, embed the graph on a page where you write the text to describe their use)
