What is the first thing you should do before trying to solve anything in a problem? (even before
FBD)
Figure out which concepts the problem is asking you to use

What are the three steps you MUST do to make a correct free body diagram?

1) Draw the mass of the structure

2) Decide which way acceleration will go (friction must oppose this direction)
3) Set up your X-Y coordinates based on acceleration

T or F: The velocity of an object at its highest point is positive if its initial velocity is positive

T or F: The cross product of two parallel vectors is 0.

T or F: It is impossible to apply force with constant velocity.

T or F: Since gravity is acceleration of the earth, it is used in the x and y component of projectile
Motion

T or F: The Newton’s 3rd Law Pair with the weight of the apple sitting on the table is the Earth’s
force on the apple.

T or F: There is always a component of velocity perpendicular to a component of acceleration,

when velocity is constant.

1) You are racing your friend but you both have speedometers with different units. You both take
off at the same time. You go at a constant speed of 74 m/s while your friend goes at a constant
speed of 200 feet per second. Who crosses the finish line first? (1 inch = 2.54 cm)

You are going faster

2) How would you describe the orientation of vector <4,4,8> with <-3,5,-1>? Parallel,
perpendicular, or neither?

Perpendicular. The dot product of the two vectors is 0.

3) What is the cross product of the two vectors above?

Plug in the equation on your equation sheet or find the magnitude with |A||B| sin 90 to get around
58

4) If the angle between vector <3, 6, 7> and <2, 4, X> is 34 degrees, what two equations would
you use to solve for X and the dot product (Y) of the two vectors? (DO NOT SOLVE FOR
EITHER)

30 + 7x = Y

Sqrt(94) * sqrt(20 + x^2) cos 34 = Y

5) Given the following v (t) graph, what would x (t) look like
6) How do we know the sign of acceleration from v(t) and x(t)?

X(t) – by concavity. Smiley face is positive acceleration, sad face is negative acceleration

V(t) – simply seeing if slope is positive or negative

7) If the velocity of a particle can be calculated by v(t) = 3t^2 + 4t + 9, what is the position of the
particle after 6 seconds if the starting position is at x = 3?

345 m

8) What is the acceleration of this same particle at t = 8?

52 m/s^2

9) You and your friend finally get the same speedometers. You both have another race. At the
instant the traffic light turns green, you start ahead with a 3.20 m/s^2 acceleration. Your friend,
underestimating the track distance, leaves with a constant 20 m/s. How far past the starting point
do you overtake your friend? How fast were you going at that moment?

t = 12.5 s, 40 m/s

10) A swimmer dives off a cliff with a running horizontal leap. What must her minimum speed
be just as she leaves the cliff so that she misses the ledge at the bottom that is 1.75m away from
her horizontally and 9m below the cliff?

V0x = 1.3 m/s

11) A circular saw blade .200m in diameter starts from rest. In 6.00 s, it accelerates with constant
angular acceleration to an angular velocity of 1337 rpm. Find the angular acceleration and the
angle through which the blade has turned.

23 rad/s^2 , 420 rads

12) A Navy aircraft carrier is cruising through the ocean at 90 mph north. A jet has reached the
necessary speed for take-off and stays on the runway for 150 mph south. A bystander watches
from a control tower west of the carrier. How fast is the ship going in reference to the jet?

240 mph

13) Three sleds each connected by a rope are being pulled horizontally on a frictionless surface
with a force of 125 N. They weigh 30 kg, 20 kg, and 10 kg from left to right. What is the
acceleration and the tension for each of the ropes between the boats (two tensions should be
calculated)

T1 = 104 N
T2 = 62.5 N
a = 2.08 m/s^2

14) Make the free body diagram(s) and find the sum of forces in the x and y direction for the
following figures. (Figures will be provided)

See Problem 5.85 in your text book. No solution provided

The turns at the Indy 500 have a maximum radius of 316 m and are steeply banked at 31 degrees.
Suppose these turns were frictionless. What speed would the cars have to travel around them?
Make a free body diagram!

43 m/s

A 75kg painter climbs a ladder at a constant speed that is 2.75m long leaning against a wall
leaning 30 degrees with the wall. How much work does gravity do on the painter?
1750 J

The force done while pushing a 20 kg box was measured over a certain distance. How much
work is done from x = 0 to 4 and x = 4 to 10 and x = 0 to 10

10J, 15 J, 25 J

How can you calculate power? (Two ways)

P = W/t or P = F * v
