The Patriot Post

The October Edition

We are off to a successful and exciting school year at Lincoln. Parents,
we want to thank you for your continued support and involvement.
September 6th, we held our first Parent University. Parents learned about
ways to volunteer at Lincoln and about programs available in the community.
If you are interested in volunteering at Lincoln, please contact the school for
information. Another way to help our school is by collecting Box Tops for
Education and sending them into the office. Box Tops help us acquire funds
to further student learning.
In October, we have many exciting events planned for our school. On
Friday, October 5th, we will be celebrating our students who exhibit positive
behavior at school. Students will attend a special event during their special
area to reinforce the Patriot PRIDE behavior expectations.
Thank you again for your continued support! Please contact us with any
questions or concerns that you have.

News From the office
Parents, please remember that school begins promptly at 7:55. If your child is a
car rider and is not inside the classroom when the 7:55 bell rings, he/she will be
marked "tardy". School doors open at 7:15, so if you want your child to arrive
early enough to eat breakfast and get in the classroom before 7:55, he/she needs
to arrive no later than 7:30. If your child arrives late, please make sure you park
and walk your child inside. This is a safety concern. Parents will be notified when
students have three (3) unexcused tardies. Parent notes are not accepted for
tardies. If you have any questions about tardies or arrival times, please contact
Ms. Lathim at 586-2062. Thank you!

The Classroom Corner

Pre-Kindergarten
We have been busy learning about families during the month of September. In
October we will be learning about our communities. We are excited about our
October 5th field trip to visit Walter State College. Due to the rain, we had to
reschedule our field trip to Echo Valley Corn Maze. We will send information home
soon on the rescheduled date. Thank you to our parents for your continued
support.
Kindergarten
Parents we are excited about studying Community Helpers, Pumpkins, and Bats
during the month of October. Parents please practice letters, sounds, sight words,
and identifying numbers 0-10 and counting objects to 10. On October 5th, we will be
having a Letters and Sounds Party. Students who know ALL Letters (capital and
lowercase ) and ALL sounds can attend the party! We are also looking forward to our
field trip the Pumpkin Patch on October 19th.

First Grade
First graders are busy learning and having fun! During the month of October, we will
continue to improve our skills in math as we add and subtract. We will read to learn
about the seasons, Veterans' Day, and our wonderful state of Tennessee! We are
working on our writing every day, and are excited about our improvements in reading.
There's a lot to celebrate in first grade! We are looking forward to our field trip to
Rocky Mount on October 16th. Don't forget that field trip money and permission slips
are due Friday, October 5th.
Second Grade
Second grade is excited about the month of October. In reading, students have been
working on folktales, nouns, and pronouns. During math, students have been working
on place value. Students are encouraged to work on IXL math at home. Please make
sure to work on math facts and fluency passages at home and return signed work on
Mondays.
The Classroom Corner
Third Grade
October brings several exciting events, such as book fair, Fall break, and a field trip
at the end of the month. In math it's important to continue practicing addition and
multiplication facts at home. In reading it's important that your child is studying
their weekly newsletter/study guide and read everyday. In the book that they read
they can identify their spelling pattern words, grammar skill, as well as the main idea
of the story.
Fourth Grade
In Fourth Grade, we are working on the following skills in English Language Arts:
Main Idea, Theme, Sequence of Events, and Compound Sentences. In Science, we
are learning about how energy is transferred from one living thing to another, and
how this cycle can be interrupted by environmental events. In Social Studies, we are
learning about the birth of the USA and the American Revolution. In Math, we are
learning how to multiply by one digit and two digits. Therefore, it is necessary for
your student to know their multiplication facts. We will be having Parent/Teacher
Conferences on Oct. 2nd, Oct 3rd, and Oct. 16th. If you need a conference and we
have not contacted you about a reserved time, please send us a note or write in
your student’s planner a time and date that would be convenient for you. Thanks for
all you do!
Fifth Grade
Thanks to all of you who came to parent/teacher conferences. If we didn't see you
or call you, write a note in your child's planner when it would be convenient to meet
or call. Fifth graders will be traveling to BizTown, Wednesday, October
24. Parents, if you signed up to volunteer for this trip and haven't heard from us,
please let us know. Students are beginning to set reading goals for their weekly
tests. Please make sure you are reading with your student every night. Ask them
questions to see if they are comprehending what they are reading. Have them read
aloud to check their fluency. PLEASE HELP YOUR STUDENTS WITH LEARNING
THEIR MULTIPLICATION FACTS. This is a very important skill in order to be
fluent in solving math problems. We will be taking our first nine week's benchmark
test next Wednesday and Thursday. Make sure your students understand to do
their best, eat breakfast, get enough sleep, and are present on those days. Thank
you for supporting us as we prepare your students for success!!

EL Update
Kindergarten ELs will continue working on learning letter names and sounds and
HFW. All other grade levels are working on foundational reading skills, vocabulary,
and fluency. Keep up the AMAZING work!!

Ms. Potter’s Class

Ms. Potter's class is concluding units on apples and the seasons. They are beginning
the study of Autumn and autumn holidays/celebrations.
Miss Troutman’s Class
Miss. Troutman's Extended Resource class has begun a program called "Brushes
and Book." This program is provided by Ridin' High. It is a therapeutic horse
program for children and adults with disabilities. Ridin' High brings two ponies to
Lincoln Heights Elementary School. Her class will read to the ponies which will help
the children practice using their reading skills outside of the classroom. The
students will get to help groom their pony after reading to it which helps them bond
and form a relationship. Forming this relationship helps encourage the children to
read because the pony is makes it more fun for the kids and wont judge their
reading abilities. We look forward to a fun year of reading and getting to know our
ponies!

Special Areas
During the month of October, we have lots of exciting events planned in special
areas.
• Library is hosting the Book Fair October 1st-5th.
• In Music, 4th and 5th grade will be participating in Recorder Karate. The fee ($2.50) for
this activity is due Tuesday, October 2.
• PE will be sending home assessment report cards this month. Please remember to make
sure that your child wears appropriate shoes on their PE days.
• In Guidance, Kindergarten through 4th grade will be covering topics of growth
mindset. Please have your student tell you what it means to have a growth
mindset. 5th grade students will be covering material for their field trip at the
end of the month for Biztown.

School Counseling
Please remember that I am here for your child daily. If you know your child needs
to see the the school counselor please call the school or send a note. Starting the
week after Fall Break, some students will be coming home with a permission form
to work in a small group with me. If your child brings this note home, please know
that the small group is to help your child be their best self here at school. Please
return the form either way, if you want your child to participate or not.

Parent University
Parent University will be held from 5pm-6pm on October 4th. We will be
sharing literacy tips, at home reading calendars, demonstrating Read to Be
Ready classroom lesson expectations and activities as well as access to the
Scholastic Book Fair in the library. Parent University is a program designed
to provide parents with information, resources, and most importantly a voice
at your child’s school. We value your input and collaboration. We would love
to add you to our parent volunteer program. You can find out more
information about volunteer opportunities on October 4th.
