HYSYS

Operating Instructions

Setup
1. Open HYSYS

2. File/New/CASE
This opens up the SIMULATION BASIS MANAGER
3. Save As (wherever you normally put these things)

4. Hit ADD
a. Add Property Package
(In this case, PRSV )
b. Add Components
- find the component in the library (eg H2)
- then hit ADD PURE or double click

- continue for all your components

……..check out the rest of the tabs (especially if you are using non-ideal VLE)
Define Simulation Blocks
1. Close the Component/Properties Menu and return to the SIMULATION MANAGER
2. Hit ‘Enter Simulation Environment’

3. First, set your units to English

a. Go to Tools/Preferences
b. Hit FIELD from the Unit Preferences List
c. Hit Load Preference Set
4. Define your feed (assume the MatBal feed as a vapor at 400 psia and 110F)
a. Click on the BLUE ARROW (material stream) and click again in the simulation field

5. Double Click to get the feed menu, where you can

a. Enter feed composition with Composition tab and edit button
b. Enter feed conditions and change name to DeC2 Feed (CONDITION TAB)

The OK line turns green and now you know that you’ve fully defined the stream.
You can see that the feed vapor fraction is 1.00, calculated at the T,P specified.
What is the Bubble Point of the feed?
Delete the temperature.
Input 0.0 for the Vapor Fraction

The Bubble Point Temperature at 400 psia is 37.48F.

6. Add a Heat Exchanger (Let’s cool the feed to its bubble point)
(First reset your feed temperature back to 110F)
a. Close the feed block
b. Click on the Heat Exchanger Icon and click on the simulation field

c. Double Click on the HEx Icon to get the input menu

d. Connect the Heat Exchanger
- Input stream is DeC2 Feed
- Output, name BubPt
- Energy stream will be Ref50F (50F Refrigeration)

e. Close the HEx and go back to simulation screen

f. Since you want the Product of your HEx to be at its BP, double click BubPt
- Enter Vapor Fraction = 0.0 and P= 400 psia

g. Double Click the HEx module after closing BubPt

h. Go the Parameters tab and you can see the duty has been calculated
(13.98 MMBTU/hr)
Note after you get out of the HEx menu that the streams and icons change colors showing that
enough information has been supplied and that the calculation is complete.
i. Go to the PLOTS tab and you can get a cooling curve
- Change the intervals from 1 to 10

We are now ready to put in a distillation tower (Deethanizer).

Input a Distillation Block

1 Click the Distillation Icon from the Icon Menu
2 Place it on the flowsheet
3 Double Click the icon to bring up the distillation input/calc menus

4 Fill in the streams in/out

a. You know the feed stream to be BubPt
b. Make up new names for the Overhead and Bottoms products
c. Name the reboiler utility Stm50 (for 50 psig steam)
d. Name the condenser utility Ref0 (for 0F refrigeration)
5 Put in you initial estimates for number of trays and feed tray location
a. Say 30 trays and put the feed smack in the middle at tray 15
b. THIS WILL BE MODIFIED AS YOU SEE THE RESULTS
c. Hit Next

6 Put in the operating pressures (MAY have to change the units), then hit next
a. 350psia in the condenser
b. 5 psi pressure drop for the condenser
c. 360psia in the reboiler
7. You can put in temperature estimates
(Generally a good idea, but sometimes hard to encvision at this point)
a. Say, Top Temp = 0 F
b. Say, Btm Temp = 200 F

7 Finish with estimate of Overhead flowrate and reflux ratio, then hit DONE
a. Ovhd=40,198 lb/hr (from MatBal) (Change flow basis to mass)
b. Say, RR=1
Run a Distillation Block
When you hit DONE, you’ll be thrown into the Column Activity Menu where you can fine tune your
specs and see the progress of your run from the MONITOR menu. This is where you will also
make changes to your tower layout, T, P, MatBal, specs, etc.

1. Hit RUN and you’ll get A solution (not necessarily THE solution)
You can see that the run is converged, there is a rather bumpy looking temperature, and your
VERY basic tower requirements (Ovhd flowrate and Reflux ratio) have been met..

2. Check your material balance to see if your component specs have been met
a. Go to PROFILES tab
b. Highlight Composition
c. View Table

d. Hit the PROPERTIES and click on/off the components of interest

(also, hit mass and flows to compare directly with the MatBal)

Our Overhead Spec (from MatBal) is 219 lb/hr compared here to 208 lb/hr calc’s…….GOOD.
The bottoms spec is 20 lb/hr and we show about 10 lb/hr calc’d………..GOOD

We have a reasonable solution and we can now fine tune it. First we need to look at other
results, like Condenser and Reboiler Duties to get a baseline for our optimization.

3. Hit the Summary Tab and look at Qcond and Qreb.

Qcond = 10.6 MMBTU/hr / Qreb = 11.2 MMBTU/hr

Spec a Distillation Block
1. Go to SPEC tab.

Let’s now set the IMPORTANT spec of allowing only 20 lb/hr C2’s in the Bottoms Product.

2. Hit ADD and then highlight Component Flow Rate then hit ADD Spec
3. Fill in the Spec Menu, identifying the components that will have a flowrate of 20lb/hr.
(Be sure to hit stage and identify the reboiler liquid as WHERE you want the spec to be met)

(Change the convergence tolerance with the Summary Tab and changing it to +/- 0.2 lb/hr)

4. Activate the C2’s in Btm spec on the SPECS menu and deactivate the Reflux Ratio spec.
(The program will start calculating the new spec)

5. Go to the Monitor Menu to see the new temp profile and RR.

You can see that the RR went from 1.0 to 0.885.
