Operating Instructions
Setup
1. Open HYSYS
2. File/New/CASE
This opens up the SIMULATION BASIS MANAGER
3. Save As (wherever you normally put these things)
4. Hit ADD
a. Add Property Package
(In this case, PRSV )
b. Add Components
- find the component in the library (eg H2)
- then hit ADD PURE or double click
……..check out the rest of the tabs (especially if you are using non-ideal VLE)
Define Simulation Blocks
1. Close the Component/Properties Menu and return to the SIMULATION MANAGER
2. Hit ‘Enter Simulation Environment’
The OK line turns green and now you know that you’ve fully defined the stream.
You can see that the feed vapor fraction is 1.00, calculated at the T,P specified.
What is the Bubble Point of the feed?
Delete the temperature.
Input 0.0 for the Vapor Fraction
6 Put in the operating pressures (MAY have to change the units), then hit next
a. 350psia in the condenser
b. 5 psi pressure drop for the condenser
c. 360psia in the reboiler
7. You can put in temperature estimates
(Generally a good idea, but sometimes hard to encvision at this point)
a. Say, Top Temp = 0 F
b. Say, Btm Temp = 200 F
7 Finish with estimate of Overhead flowrate and reflux ratio, then hit DONE
a. Ovhd=40,198 lb/hr (from MatBal) (Change flow basis to mass)
b. Say, RR=1
Run a Distillation Block
When you hit DONE, you’ll be thrown into the Column Activity Menu where you can fine tune your
specs and see the progress of your run from the MONITOR menu. This is where you will also
make changes to your tower layout, T, P, MatBal, specs, etc.
1. Hit RUN and you’ll get A solution (not necessarily THE solution)
You can see that the run is converged, there is a rather bumpy looking temperature, and your
VERY basic tower requirements (Ovhd flowrate and Reflux ratio) have been met..
2. Check your material balance to see if your component specs have been met
a. Go to PROFILES tab
b. Highlight Composition
c. View Table
Our Overhead Spec (from MatBal) is 219 lb/hr compared here to 208 lb/hr calc’s…….GOOD.
The bottoms spec is 20 lb/hr and we show about 10 lb/hr calc’d………..GOOD
We have a reasonable solution and we can now fine tune it. First we need to look at other
results, like Condenser and Reboiler Duties to get a baseline for our optimization.
Let’s now set the IMPORTANT spec of allowing only 20 lb/hr C2’s in the Bottoms Product.
2. Hit ADD and then highlight Component Flow Rate then hit ADD Spec
3. Fill in the Spec Menu, identifying the components that will have a flowrate of 20lb/hr.
(Be sure to hit stage and identify the reboiler liquid as WHERE you want the spec to be met)
(Change the convergence tolerance with the Summary Tab and changing it to +/- 0.2 lb/hr)
4. Activate the C2’s in Btm spec on the SPECS menu and deactivate the Reflux Ratio spec.
(The program will start calculating the new spec)
5. Go to the Monitor Menu to see the new temp profile and RR.
