COURSE SYNOPSIS
KE 26203 is an introductory course on solid state electronic devices for undergraduate
electrical and Electronic engineering students. The course is also multidisciplinary in nature
integrating electrical engineering with materials science and engineering, mathematics, modern
engineering physics and materials property as well.
Introduction to semiconductor materials, fundamentals of carrier phenomena, operating
principles of p-n junction diodes, metal-semiconductor contacts (Schottky diodes), BJT and
field-effect transistors (MOSFETS and JFETS), etc and knowledge leading to understanding of
photo emitters, photo detectors and other optoelectronic devices.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course objectives are:
1. Understand the basics of materials and conduction processes in solids so that a student can
later learn about newly developed devices and applications.
2. Familiarize students with the commonly used semiconductor terms and concepts related to
a broad range of semiconductor devices to benefit a student’s career and engineering
practice.
3. Apply the concepts to basic semiconductor devices to explain the device operation and
evaluate characteristic parameters.
4. Understand essential operation mechanisms of existing semiconductor devices for
meaningful electronic engineering study.
