Bastion 6, part of the Hilsea Lines, will be the new home for the WW1 Remberance Centre which is currently located
at Fort Widley. Currently, the Bastion 6 is in an unhabitable, vandalised and neglected state but under continuous
Hilsea Lines renovations to bring the ancient back to a habitable state.

The hilsea lines is a valuable nature area and has developed on a site that was originally a military base. The first defences were built in 1544 and
protected the city and the port of Portsmouth from inland attack for 300 years, before the existing lines replaced them in 1871 when the renewed
threat of a French invasion prompted the construction of stronger defences. Exisiting Problems
Ventilation Awkwardly sized Spaces
This two mile long structure of chalk and earth ramparts 9m high and 20 m wide , consists of six bastions of bombproof casemates and a moat to Natural Daylight Varied Levels
the north . The expected invasion never occured and the Hilsea Lines were not used in the battle. Most of the original structure is unaltered today. Disabled Access Uneven Flooring
The Lines were designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument in 1964, and gained Conservation Area status in 1994 in recognition of the value, not Damp Lack of services
only of the monument, but also of its setting. Lack of Flexibility(Ancient Monument Listing) Lack of space in Car Park

THE BRIEF
World War One
Imaginative sketches of areas
I am designing a ww1 exhibition centre for 13-18 years of age . I aim to create a building in which it will be informative yet
intriguing.
I have tried to incorporate a range of rooms in order to make the visit to the museum informative yet emotionally impactful.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
I am interested in using the geometry and feeling of a trench to create an experience in the museum . The main concept of my building is using lighting,
restricted space and the angular structure of the trench to create the artistic installation in the centre of the Bastion 6 building.

Apple Store, Covent Garden

I am interested in the simplistic/minimalistic layout of the

Apple store for the trace family room and photography
room. The apple brand and store is heavily based upon

This is also an angular design with more free flowing and uniquely
shaped angles

The projection of the videos that are in this image is similar
to the idea that I am using for the video room that will be in
the Bastion 6 , However people will be able to circulate
around the walls.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
Concept Models
Materials

Below are some materials I am considering using.

Daniel Leibskin- Jewish Museum- Dark , eerie spaces and angular walls

MDF-It can be easily painted to create

which ever mood you want. Ideal for ga-
llery walls as it is smooth.

scale 1:200 Glass- I am interested in using glass to maybe

display the pictures that will be put up in the
I started off by looking at different ways in which people could circulate around the artistic installation that will be located in the middle of the building . I began with looking at structures that use the geometry of a trench that they could walk around . insertion
After this ,I tried to see if there is a way in which they could enter the angular space, using a darker colour to help create a dark, narrow, trench experience.

Final model

Zara Hadid - Fire Station -Tight Angular walls that have been said to make people
feel sick/uneasy
Timber planks- I like the aesthetic look
of timber planks and can really visualise
this working with my design

Concrete- Unpolished/Unfinished grey

concrete walls could really contribute to
making the feeling of being uncomforta-
ble.
Guggenheim de Bilbao- artistic installation/walls that are narrow in which people
can circulate through

The final model focuses on the artistic installation in the building showing the purity of the white colour
and harshness of the black colour on the walls of the artistic installation in contrast to the colour and structural hierachy
of the Bastion 6 building
