ISRO Syllabus for Mechanical Exam 2016

ISRO Syllabus For Mechanical which will consist of 80 questions. Here are the topics with their weightage:
1) Strength of Material:
 Weightage: 10 – 13 Questions
 Tough to grasp Concepts, Moderately Time Consuming, High Scoring, More numericals.
 Question Types/ Sub Topic: Simple stress and strain, elastic constant, Poissons ratio, thermal stress,
principal stress and strain, Mohr’s circle analysis, shear force and bending moment, slope and deflection,
bending and torsion, columns, strain energy, pressure vessel, testing of material on UTM and impact
testing.
2) Theory of Machine and Mechanical Vibrations:
 Weightage: 8 – 10 Questions
 Few Topics, Mostly Numericals, High Scoring, Less Time Consuming.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: Planer mechanism, cams, flywheel, governor, gyroscope, gear and gear train,
balancing, under damped and damped vibrations, natural frequency and resonance, harmonic oscillations,
whirling of shaft, logarithmic decrements.
3) Design of machine elements:
 Weightage: 3– 4 Questions
 Very Few Selected Topics, Formula based questions, Very Less Time Consuming.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: Design against fluctuating load, riveted and welded joints, bearings, clutches,
belt drives, springs.
4) Engineering Mechanics:
 Weightage: 6 – 8 Questions
 Moderate difficulty level, More Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: Kinematics of motion, trusses and frames, Impulse and momentum (linear
and angular), angular motion, friction, rolling and sliding motion.
5) Thermal Engineering:
 Weightage: 8 – 10 Questions
 Very Less Time Consuming, Highest Accuracy Possible, Low Difficulty Level.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: system properties and temperature measurement, first law of
thermodynamics, heat and work transfer, entropy, second law of thermodynamics, availability and
irreversibility, properties of pure substances, properties of gases, refrigeration and air conditioning, Air
standard cycles.
6) Heat Transfer:
 Weightage: 6 – 7 Questions
 Theoretical topics, Less Time Consuming, High Accuracy Possible, Mostly Numericals.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: Conduction, conduction in cylinder and spherical objects, critical thickness
of insulation, fins, convection and various dimensionless parameters in free and forced convective heat
transfer, radiation heat exchange between plane surfaces, shape factor, heat exchanger-LMTD and NTU
methods.
7) Fluid Mechanics and Machinery:
 Weightage: 12 – 15 Questions
 Needs Clear Concepts, Less Time Consuming, High accuracy, Highest Scoring Subject.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: Fluid properties; hydrostatic force, pressure measurement, buoyancy, Fluid
kinematics, fluid dynamics, Bernoulli’s equation, orifice, venturi meter, Vortex flow, boundary layer,
elementary turbulent flow, flow through pipes, Impulse and reaction turbine, centrifugal pump, specific
speed and cavitation.
8) Production Engineering:
 Weightage: 10 – 13 Questions
 Time Consuming, Moderate Accuracy Possible, More Theoretical.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: Metal casting, metal forming, rolling, forging, extrusion, drawing, sheet
metal operations, and blanking, punching, principles of powder metallurgy. Principles of welding, brazing
and soldering, machining analysis, tool life and wear, various machining processes, principles of non-
traditional machining, metrology and Inspection: limits, fits and tolerances, various gauges.
9) Material Science:
 Weightage: 3 -5 Questions
 Theoretical, Less Time Consuming.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: Crystal structure, miller indices, heat treatment of steel, types of cast iron,
properties of material.
10) Engineering Mathematics:
 Weightage: 8-10 Questions
 More Time Consuming, Very High Accuracy Possible, Mostly Numericals.
 Question Types/Sub Topics: Linear Algebra: matrix algebra, eigenvalues and eigen vectors, definite and
improper integrals, gradient, divergence and curl, directional derivatives, line, surface and volume
integrals, applications of Gauss, Stokes and Green’s theorems, first order differential equations, higher
order linear differential equations with constant coefficients, Laplace transforms, Complex analysis,
analytic function, probability and distribution.
