Gradually, we developed a common language: every section of new music was woven into the

There is this very clear language that you speak to and with me - I never had this

Peter Dombrovský
Although your language is very difficult I also feel completely natural with it, and your
Marek Belančat
writing is so idiomatic that I asked you if you were a wind player as well, you remember?
What surprises me is the direct and uncomplicated communication I have with your work:
Mia Wallace
there is nothing in your style of writing that leaves me wondering what is going on or puzzled
in any way - the music flows so easy, and it is simple for me to follow even the most
sophisticated and complex relation between thought and colour of sound.

Am I really honest here... This is by far the most difficult piece I have ever encountered. Well,
to express a complicated emotion, the tools must be adequate. Complexity of expression
means complex techniques. Anyhow, Vito seemed to be telling his story through me, and I
told mine through his music. This strangely and in a way symbiotic relation grew stronger
and stronger, and it was based on a shared understanding of expressions like alienation,
loneliness, harassment and loss. We share the experience of being outsiders as artists, of
looking for a road to acceptance of what we do. Vito lives in the beautiful Apulian countryside
in a self induced inner exile with his music as a window to the world. For me, my choice of
instrument has meant a constant questioning of what I am doing and a position far away
from the established musical stage. My wish to make music with a large orchestra

It is a really sad story. My voice never interacts with the calm and harmonious strings, I can't
belong anywhere, I will always be alone, in my own world.
That is a very true picture of me, Vito. You see me. You understand who I am.
Ondrej Vesely But the beauty of the drama is eternal: This is what I am: just a voice, and there is nothing I

The concerto is in one big movement, with a calm section in the middle. Some would call it

Udalosť finely crafted variations based on known forms, like the sonata and the sonatina, and in this
case the concerto.

My way of construction is similar to a spider web, 'lattice' in Italian. Then in the

VAŠE expansion of
STRÁNKY

this revised form of 'sonata' I have an idea of three-dimensional space more than linear (as
Základná umelecká šk… 2

happened in classicism). Then I converge and overlap sound layers and textures of different
Ondrej Veselý
styles that culminate in the central movement.
Tempus Vernum 1

It often occurred to me, that Vito had a very deep understanding of ancient music, which
CONTACTS
sometimes serves as a point of reference for his own creativity: in the sonata for recorder and
Adamuel Quente Jopek
harpsichord he uses a Bach passacaglia theme as starting point for one of the movements.
Erik van Hurina

Early music and Greek mythology give me the raw materials. In my music, I use archetypes
Martin Jantula
as a source of light, but I transform them and filter all in a process based on my feelings.
Marek Puco Oravec

It also occurred to me, that Vito talked about all music as contemporary in one way or
Peter Dombrovský
another, to which I can only add, that all performances take place in the present, making the
Marek
music performed contemporary at least philosophically speaking. The phraseology inBelančat
the
recorder concerto is quite classical: phrases are rhetorical in the sense that they Mia
seem to refer
Wallace
to what what just being said as well as presenting new cells of musical gestures. This is very
clear at the very beginning from the moment the recorder enters, and I hear this as a baroque
feature in a modern disguise.

I noticed while working with my part that there always were elements of recognition in every
phrase….! It gives a wonderful, mystic coherence to everything in my part. The keyword for
me as a player is 'recognition'.

To my great surprise Vito then invoked a composer I never thought would have entered our
discussion: Richard Wagner. One of the fundamental principles of Wagner's understanding
of the 'Gesamtkunstwerk' is the use of 'fixed' thematic material which is used to describe a
person or a feeling. The presence on stage of a person (supported by his musical 'tag') could
be simultaneously accompanied by someone else's 'tag', for example an adversary not
present, creating a tension or a subconscious understanding of the drama. The 'tag' was
named 'Leitmotif' by Wagner. The prospect of ambiguity, for parallel story-telling and
confusion, reenters the musical stage after decades of boring music which was the result of
Enlightenment art theory and its quest for transparency and simple truths.

With its powerful identity, a Leitmotif is like a clear message. And I pulverize this theme,
motive or cell in every way in my development and in the expansion of the material. It is not
a mathematical approach but intuitive and instinctive; it is very natural, not mechanic, I
strive to maintain the Leitmotif's identity and to keep it recognizable, but it never returns in
its initial shape. I always let a theme disintegrate to a certain level, in a dense web of
overlapping textures. This happens also in the recorder concerto.

Vito's explanation helped me in my daily work with his music:

I understand. It explains places in my part where the motives in phrases appear to be similar,
yet are entirely different. Rhetorically this is fascinating, and as a player I never feel 'lost' in
the development of my phrases.

Speaking rhetorically this is like being in a constant state of 'confutatio' without noticing it:
the ongoing, very delicate redefinition of ideas leeds us to believe that we do understand our
position and who we are, when the truth is, that what seemed to be familiar and safe has
turned into a treacherous quagmire. Wittgenstein would have loved this. TheHľadať
responsibility
of the composer to chose a method for expressing his or her ideas clearly is an underrated
topic. There MUST be a relation between what is being said and how to say it.
RÝCHLE HRY VIAC

In this way I justify the use of the large forms in our contemporary time. Many works of
composers nowadays are just composed by juxtaposing musical material. My idea is to create
a living, independent organism. More than a system, it is a living organismVAŠE
in which each
STRÁNKY

part contributes to the whole, Základná umelecká šk… 2

Ondrej Veselý
Again I could connect to the importance of ancient thinking in Vito's world:
Tempus Vernum 1

Vito…. you're my hero! Aristotle talks about the tragedy as a form with a kind of 'physis', a
CONTACTS
living organism, where certain elements have to be present - and then the art form takes on
Adamuel Quente Jopek
its own life.
Erik van Hurina

The discussion of Aristotle and his relation to 'nature' (in this case physis) and 'art' (as in
Martin Jantula
techne) is far more complicated than I managed to express in this email, but let's leave the
subject for now. Marek Puco Oravec

Peter Dombrovský
In my opinion, the slower middle section is the core of the composition. It grows out of the
Marek
first part, with long, sustained chords that gradually suggests a tonal context. This Belančat
happens
so slowly that the listener probably won't notice it happening, and the effect is stunning.
Mia Wallace
However, there are elements of disturbing dissonance lingering in the recorder, which never
succeeds with becoming a part of the texture.

The lyrical passage is the most elegant and other-worldly beauty I have ever met. Finally
there is a contemporary beauty of incomparable, refined power... just like a calm sea after the
storm, and a lingering sixth.... The last two minutes is absolute magic, but the flute remains
more and more in its own world where previously it was constantly commenting and
imitating the orchestra, sometimes just with variation technique. But at the end, it keeps
another identity, more independent, where the surroundings are so incredibly caressing and
calm. I like very much the clashes of different modi, with major-related, almost tonal chord
progressions juxtaposing the atonal world of the recorder. I think of a clash of cultures....The
wonderful, incredibly beautiful waves of major in the orchestra and dissonances in the
recorder is so expressive. And clashes of minor and major at the same time (Scriabin...?
Prometheus?) is painful and beautiful at the same time.

I cannot free myself from the thought that the composer is playing with the musical
awareness of the listeners in the slow section of the concerto. Recognition of ideas and
concepts help us to connect to our understanding of 'the world', in this case represented by
the recorder concerto. After a very complex and difficult opening of the work, the slow
section offers an almost 'traditional' set of harmonic progressions where the listener (and the
players!) can find an almost meditative peace where the future (if important at all...) is
foreseeable. But little by little, the notion of a more pronounced disharmony makes itself
present: the voice of the recorder never manages to sing the major third which defines the
major mode, whereas the orchestra, the surrounding society (if you will) represents an ideal
picture of peace and happiness.

The slow section is so beautiful and fragile... something like this never ever was a part of my
instrument's repertoire before, and I feel that I have to grow a lot as an artist to make justice
to this enormous painting...

The third part of the concerto would be the last one. I was starting to worry about the
perspective of a romantic concerto finale where the soloist is supposed to master whatever
comes in his or her way.

Hľadať
What do you have in mind for a finale....? Technically speaking I am at my limit with some
passages that you have in the first part. There are some articulated arpeggi in fast triplets that
are really quick, and faster, articulated passages is something I can't do maintaining a good
RÝCHLE HRY VIAC
and rich sound.

Vito tried his best to comfort me:

VAŠE STRÁNKY

very sharp dynamic contrasts...In fact, Dan, I want to go over everything and say new things
about the tonality, the atonality, the noise... I want a synthesis, but in a poetic way...
Tempus Vernum 1

CONTACTS
At first I believed him:
Adamuel Quente Jopek

The new part is so strong...! I love the rhythmical chords and the high definitionErik

puls. The transformation from the lyrical passage is a master piece, and I can't wait to know
Martin Jantula
more of the concerto... I gives me such a pleasure to practise your music, and to have this
music in my soul also when I don't work with it. It has become a part of me now.Marek
I hear many
Puco Oravec

elements from before appearing which creates such a unity of form and expression.... I am so
Peter Dombrovský
curious about the last section!
Marek Belančat

But the Truth revealed itself: Mia Wallace

I go on for the last 10 minutes of volcano activity...

The last section opens with a desperately happy, acrobatic dance accompanied by mocking
woodwinds shadowing the soloist with dissonant imitations. When listening to the
computerised version for the first time I remember thinking 'this can't end well'. The
recorder seems to believe that it has to prove itself with evermore complicated tricks to
convince - but the psychology of losing makes itself more articulated in the solo voice as the
piece progresses. But it wasn't my battle only; it became clear to me that Vito was going
through a very difficult period in his life, and that this wasn't my story alone.

I listened again and again.... The sorrow of the last 4 minutes is so deep and fundamental
that I feel worried about you....! Are you more or less ok, Vito?

I just had to ask.

Oh Dan, yes... more or less ok... One day I'll speak about my experiences in this period...
nothing really worrying - at least I think -. I'm pouring everything into my music... You are a
great sensitive musician and you can feel everything in the music... I'm so happy for this.
Now I'm going on... I'm opening new scenes, new landscape of my soul and I'm trying to go in
deep to research sound colours in my instrumentation...This concerto is the deep expression
of my being in this moment... All my emotions, suffering, movements of my soul... condensed
in this music. You can feel everything and more... This concert is my gift to you and surely I'll
write more in the future... Now I'll go ahead with the work.

Meanwhile, I had begun studying the work every day. The daily confrontation with music of
such high technical difficulty became an obsession, and although my progress was very, very
slow, I never thought that the complexity of it all would prove too much for me. Naivety is a
blessing.

I can almost play the first four minutes now. It is a great feeling to finally learn more about
music and myself. I have longed for this for many, many years - but I had no idea to what
extent I could be personally involved in any piece of art till now. To see some of Caravaggio's
paintings 'live' for the first time was also revelatory: Davide, cold, beautiful, young,
Hľadať
triumphant, with Goliath's chopped-off head, the life-less eyes, bad teeth... and the painter's
self portrait! I had to leave the room in Villa Borghese, just couldn't take in the immense
dimensions of the work.

before that I'll have to go to Stavanger in Norway and Lingen in Germany with Mia Wallace
