ANSYS Introduces Tamper Resistant Licenses (TRL)

Objective:
Provide information about our Tamper Resistant Licensing (TRL) migration schedule and how
this may impact you. This information is only applicable to the ANSYS License Manager.

Introduction:
We are about to take the next step in migrating to TRL. We will soon begin issuing new license
keys to you, our customer, when you renew your TECS or Lease ANSYS product license(s).
These new license keys contain both TRL & our current Phase­2 encryption methods; we refer
to these as hybrid TRL/Phase­2 licenses.

As long as you are running at least the Release 13.0 ANSYS License Manager, this will have no
impact, other than your license key will look a bit different!  If you are running a License Manager
prior to 13.0, then you will need to request a Phase­2 only (current license encryption method)
license key from your account manager. Regardless of whether Phase­2 or TRL/Phase­2 hybrid
licenses are being used, you will still be able to run earlier versions (For example Release 10
and 11) of the ANSYS applications.

Why are we migrating to TRL:
Tamper Resistant Licensing (TRL) is an advanced encryption method (Elliptic Curve
Cryptography) available in FlexNet licensing.
● The Phase­2 method of encryption is no longer supported by Flexera.
● Several defects exist with Phase­2 that will not be fixed by Flexera. We are currently
working around these defects.
● For consistency with our Apache & Ansoft Licensing that already uses TRL.

TRL Implementation Timeline:
Our TRL migration consists of the steps outlined in the table below, each step will occur in the
sequence given.

Q4 2000: Phase­ 2 license keys were introduced.

Q4 2010: ANSYS vendor daemon was upgraded to support both Phase­2 & TRL
Release 13.0 license keys. We call this the “Hybrid vendor daemon”.
The result is that the Release 13.0 vendor daemon (onward) supports
hybrid license keys.

Q2 2013 We will start issuing hybrid license keys for your renewal & new  license
keys. We will provide an option to create Phase­2 only license keys if
required to run a license manager earlier than Release 13.0.

How Do Find Out What Version of the ANSYS License Manager I am using?
Run the ANSLIC_ADMIN utility on your license server. Select the Help > About ANSYS, Inc.
Licensing menu item. In the main window of the utility look for the “ansysli_server” line item. This
will state “Updated at ANSYS Release X”. X is the version number & should be higher than
Release 13.0 in order to use the Hybrid license keys. This example screenshot shows that
release 14.5 of the ANSYS License Manager is running:

How Will Your License Key Change?
● The change occurs in the INCREMENT line by inclusion of a SIGN2 keyword followed by
the encryption string
● Approximately 85 characters are added to each INCREMENT line
● The change should be immediately obvious when viewing the license file (license.dat)

Red characters are Phase­ 2 encryption, Blue characters are TRL encryption:
