Dear Ruberrand Tonya,
1am writing to you as a follow-up to our telephone conversation on
Thursday, February 8, 2018.
The Review Board for the Diocese of Sioux City met on Monday,
February 5, 2018 and discussed Fr. Jerry Coyle’s living situation. tt was
the consensus of the Review Board that he should pursue securing
residence in a Nursing Home/Senior Living Center that could admit him
to its Assisted Living facilities.
This recommendation is based on two major considerations. First,
having moved to the Albuquerque area for treatment in 1986, he has
now lived there for over 30 years, has acclimated to the climate of that
area, and all the components of his “support system” (including you)
are there. If Fr. Coyle were to move back to lowa, it would require a
complete rebuilding of his network of friends and associates, as well
as a dramatic readjustment to the climate. Neither of which is
impossible, but for an 84-year-old man, such a move would inevitably
be physically and emotionally very difficult.
Secondly, of greater concern to the Review Board was Fr. Coyle’s self-
revealed history of sexual attraction to and contact with boys. When
he self-reported his situation to then Bishop Soens and asked for help,
Fr. Coyle admitted that, for a period of about 20 years, he victimized
approximately 50 school bays, varying from 7" to 10" grade. It is now
estimated that those same men would range in age from 45 to 70
