Rationale / Background:

This study was aimed at assessing the learning

strategies and styles of high school freshmen which

was used as a basis for a proposed classroom

activities geared towards the enhancement of learning

startegies and learning styles of respondents.

In this study 303 first year students of Nueva

Ecija High School in Cabanatuan City were involved as

respondents and were chosen using the systematic

random sampling procedure. The Strategy Inventory for

Language Learning (SILL) and the Perceptual Learning

Style Preference Questionnaire developed by Reid were

used as the main instruments. These were reinforced by

the unstructured interviews conducted by the

researcher. The study was conducted during the second

semester of Academic Year 2009-2010.

The significant findings of the study indicate

that high school freshmen “Sometimes” employ all the

learning strategies under study.

On the perceptive learning styles of the high

school freshmen, 17.49% prefer to study in group;

15.18% were visual learners; 14.52% were tactile

learners; 12.54% were individual learners; and 10.56

were auditory learners. There were also those whose

dominant learning styles are a combination of Tactile

and Individual with 2.64%; Visual and Auditory with

1.98%; Visual and Group, Auditory and Kinesthetic, and

Tactile and Group with 1.65% each, Auditory and Group

with 1.32%; Visual and Tactile, Auditory and

Individual, Auditory and Tactile with 0.99%;

Kinesthetic and Group, Kinesthetic and Individual,

Visual, Kinesthetic and Individual, Auditory,

Kinesthetic and Group and Visual, Tactile and Group

with 0.66%. There were however eight (2.64%)

respondents who did not register any learning style

whether be singly or combination of.

Not one of the variables, namely, age, sex, high

school graduated from, average in English VI,

educational attainment of mother and father and socio

economic status is noted to be a predictor of the

learning styles of high school freshmen.
