Archdiocese of San Antonio response to media inquiry

concerning allegations of sexual abuse by Ruben Calderon

The Archdiocese of San Antonio has been made aware of allegations of sexual abuse by Ruben Calderon,
a former coach at Providence Catholic School and at Holy Cross of San Antonio.

Providence Catholic School alerted their community on Nov. 6 of an ongoing investigation of Calderon
by an outside investigator hired by the school, and that these allegations have been reported to local
law enforcement and the Texas Department of Protective Services.

Both Providence Catholic School and Holy Cross of San Antonio are private Catholic schools and are
overseen by the Congregation of Divine Providence and the Congregation of the Holy Cross,
respectively. The administration and operations of the schools are directed by these religious
communities and its educational leadership.

Regarding private Catholic schools, the Archdiocese of San Antonio has a two-fold oversight role.
Primarily, Archbishop Gustavo García-Siller, MSpS, collaborates with the religious orders to ensure the
Catholic identity of these institutions and secondly, the archdiocesan Department of Catholic Schools
works with the schools administration/leadership regarding state accreditation through the Texas
Catholic Conference of Bishops Education Department.

Any inquiries regarding these allegations should be directed to the administration of Providence Catholic
School and Holy Cross of San Antonio.

The archdiocese strongly encourages anyone with relevant information concerning any allegation of
sexual abuse or with additional information concerning Ruben Calderon to immediately contact the San
Antonio Police Department at (210) 207-7484. Additionally, Providence Catholic School requests in their
communication with alumnae that anyone with this type of information also contact Principal Alicia
Garcia at (210) 224-6651 or Scott Schneider, their outside investigator, at (512) 479-1145.

The archdiocese offers its gratitude -- as has Providence Catholic School -- to the brave women who
came forward and shared their experiences regarding these tragic incidences of sexual abuse. We pray
for all victims of sexual abuse; that they find support as well as emotional and spiritual healing.
