 Basic Techniques
There are many techniques and technique combinations, all varying in difficulty. Some techniques can

be learnt in a very short time, and others may take a bit longer to master. As you become better at

making jewellery, you will naturally become more inventive as well. Just take it slow and don’t forget

to have fun. Here are some very basic techniques to get you started:

How to open and close a jump ring

What you need: two flat nose pliers, fair size ring to practice.

Method: Hold a pair of pliers in each hand. Position the pliers on each side of the ring, close to the

opening. Grip both sides of the ring tightly. Push one of the pliers away from you and bring the others

towards you. Make sure you don’t twist them apart sideways. Now the ring should open. To close the

ring, reverse the steps as mentioned above, in the opposite direction. Make sure that both ends of the

ring line up without a space or overlapping.

How to make basic loops

What you need: round nose pliers, wire.

Method: Grasp the end of a piece of wire tightly with the round nose pliers. Turn the wire around the

nose of the pliers. Close the loop by slightly twisting the pliers.

How to make two simple loops with a bead

What you need: wire, beads, round nose pliers

Method: Make a simple loop at the end of the wire. String your bead onto the wire. Measure the

length of the wire needed for the second loop. Cut the wire to the measured length. Make another

simple loop. You can make a few of these and join them together to make a bracelet.

Why Silver Plated?

Pliers are an essential tool for jewellery making. Our set includes wire cutters to cut the tiger tail/
wire, round nose pliers which are made for creating bends and smooth curves while holding the
shape, and flat nosed pliers for angled bends and twists.

What are seed beads?

Seed beads are small, round beads which are used in almost any beading activity. They work
as great spacer beads or simple stringing projects.
