Performing arts is an arts branch which is showed /shown “live” by artists and in some
cases, it includes performers. The performance art has been around for some time and has/was a
major in avant-garde art during the twentieth century. Dance also falls under this category. Dance
is a very natural and universal human activity. Dance can be said to be a form of self-expression
though movement. In this paper I will describe two types of dance, that is jazz and modern
dance. I will discuss both of their development and history. The use of line, form rhythm and
repetition; description of inspiration of work in terms of theme, story and image; and a
The Jazz dance can be dated back to 1800s to the mid-1900s and was from the dialect
dance of African American/s (Marshall, 1994). Joe Frisco was One of the early jazz dancers in
1910s Joe Frisco danced in a loose limped style near the flour and at the same time juggling his
hat, derby and cigar. Until 1950s, the Jazz dance was always called tap dance since tap dancing
was the original performance during that period especially for Jazz music. Jazz dance was
however connected to common origins of most known dances like ballet, tap and African
American rhythm and dance. Later, popular forms of Jazz dance sprouted like the Charleston,
Modern dance came to light in Germany and United States in the 19th century. The period
when the rise of middle class was experienced in add/the United States, the modern dance came
about due to rebellion of desertification/? with ballet. The modern dance does not have any direct
roots with any ballet company, school or artist. Modern dance not only emerged from the Middle
class in America, it also helped pave way for socioeconomic changes in Europe.
Techniques use a comma/ form/s the basis of all dance movements. Jazz dance involves a
series of leaps and turns. Dancers need/s central control of the body and correct posture since the
center of the body is the focal point of which all movements emerge. The reason for this is to
maintain the balance so that powerful movements can be executed. Spotting is a very important
turning technique in Jazz. Spotting always permits the dancer to execute proper Fouetté and
Pirouettes without being dizzy. The Jazz dance can be performed either traditionally or by
influence from other musical kinds like hip-hop, ballet, acro or lyrical. Some of the common
dance moves are like hip walk, calypso, stag leap, pivot step and toe rise, there are many more, I
The mother of modern dance is Martha Graham. The dancer was slightly shorter and
older than the average dance/r during that time. She used her body in modern and athletic form
which add/went against the female dance principle. Martha spent most of her lifetime advocating
and studying for the arts. She created techniques which are not currently used in dance but takes
approximately ten years to fully master. Martha’s two main techniques are contraction and
release. Dancers can contract muscles through tension and use the energy flow after muscle
relaxation to begin the movement. Hence creating the tight and choppy movement. Contraction
of spines and rib cage give an illusion that female dancers are much more aggressive as if they
In order the dance forms to work, a dancer must posses above control of their body and at
the same time possess a sense of free flow of rhythm. Good body posture allows a dancer to
connect well with steps, feel the movement internally and execute the movement inside out.
Those with ballet background are well positioned to grasp the concept of Jazz dance. Well we
can state that Jazz dance is dance from with/? influence from the ballet, other African American
music and Tap. Many kinds of Jazz dance have evolved over the years like swing, stag lip and
Charleston which are still being used in dance today. Modern dance came about due to rebellion
of ballet hence its safe to say that modern dance is not related in any way to ballet. Martha
