Event Information:
Congratulations, this is the first step towards your study abroad plans!
WHAT TO BRING TO THE FAIR?
• This ticket, you can print it or show it on your phone.
• Copies of your high school transcripts, to hand out to the college reps. The college representatives meet many students. Being a
step ahead in your application process and handing out copies of your transcripts will make you stand out from the crowd.
• Copies of your TOEFL, IELTS, SATs or ACTs results if you have them. If you don’t have these tests yet, you can send them to the
universities during your application process. If you already have a date scheduled to take any of these tests, let the admissions
officers know.
• Pen and paper to make notes after leaving each booth. You will learn a lot about many institutions, so write down your thoughts,
likes, dislikes, and concerns while the information is fresh in your memory.
THE U.S. EDUCATION AND ADMISSION PROCESS
Before coming to the fair, read this must-know information about the US Education system and learn how to take the most
advantage of the college fair.
DEGREES YOU CAN GET IN THE USA
Undergraduate Programs
• Associate’s Degree: 2 years or 60 credits (approx.)
• Bachelor’s Degree: 4 years or 120 credits (approx.)
Graduate Programs
• Master’s Degree: 1 - 2 years or 35 credits (approx.)
• Doctorate Degree: Varies
There are 4 types of Colleges and Universities: Community Colleges (offer 2-year programs), Private Colleges, Public/State
Universities and Private Universities. These can also be Research Institutions, Liberal Arts Colleges, and Universities, Career-
Oriented or Religious.
THE COST FOR THE COLLEGES OR UNIVERSITY INCLUDE
• Tuition: Cost of education or classes
• Other Fees: Recreation, health center, etc.
• Room and Board: Accommodation and meals
• Miscellaneous: Books, health insurance, personal funds, etc.
HOW CAN I GET A SCHOLARSHIP?
• Scholarships are available at most universities. You must ask the university representatives. International student scholarships
are mostly merit-based (based on grades).
• Some state universities are not allowed to offer scholarships to international students but the credit/hour might cost less than at a
private university.
• Check with local government, churches, and companies for private scholarships. You can also check with the local US Education
Service Office.
TO TAKE THE MOST ADVANTAGE OF THE COLLEGE FAIR FOLLOW THESE TIPS:
• Speak to all universities, even if you are determined to live in a specific city. You might find a University or College you really like or
an opportunity you can’t pass.
• When meeting the College/University representative, smile and introduce yourself. You should ask your questions and get their
business cards. This way you can contact them in case you still need more information, or to let them know if you decide to apply to
their institution.
• Think of questions to ask the Admissions Officers and write them down before you go to the fair. Here are some suggestions:
o Do you have …………….. (major or program you are interested)?
o What is the cost of the tuition?
o How much will I spend during a year at your university, including tuition, room and board, books, health insurance and any other
expenses?
o When do I need to choose my major?
o What is the average class size?
o Are there scholarship opportunities for International Students? What are the requirements? Do I need to fill out a separate
application?
o Is the scholarship renewable each year? Or do I need to apply every year?
o Do you have residence halls? How are roommates assigned?
o Can I work on campus? Are there work-study opportunities?
o How much support will I get from my teachers after class? How do you provide academic advice to students?
o Is it common for Teacher Assistants (not professors) to teach classes?
o Is it possible to do a double major? Will the tuition cost increase?
o Are there research opportunities for undergraduate students?
o What percentage of freshmen return to sophomore year?
o What percentage of students get internships and where?
Do you organize events?
• After the college fair, email the college representatives, thank them for speaking with you at the fair. Ask them any additional
questions you might have. If you decide to apply, let them know. Being in touch with a college representative will increase your
chances of being accepted and getting a merit-based scholarship. Start selling in minutes with Eventbrite!
