2.0 INDUSTRIAL ENVIRONMENT

2.1 Adaptation and adjustment to the industry

On the first day reporting at Salutica for industrial training I was required to
undergo training which cover the company background, working procedure and also
safety. It was after the training that I was brought to Reliability Laboratory where I met
my industrial supervisor, Mr Halim. Soon after I met Mr Halim, he introduces me to
other staff and engineer in the department. He explained the task and duties that I will
carried out during my training. It took me no time at all to cope with the working
environment as all the staff are very friendly and supportive. During my placement I had
the practical work experience under professional supervision.

Although I was assigned to Reliability Lab, my job sometimes required me to go

to the other department. This is because some task given to me need the usage of the
equipment such as X-ray which situated at another department. Apart from that due to
the nature of my work, I was required to go to the manufacturing line to learn the
working procedure and technique used to find the root cause of product failure or even to
acquire sample for testing. Hence, I got plenty of chance to meet a lot of employee and it
has improved my ability in interacting with other people.

The rules and regulation also help me to grow as a person. I had to be punctual
and wear clothes as according to the dress code defined by the company. Getting to
know what it is like to work in the industry have taught me how to conduct myself
properly in working environment. I also able to improve in my time management, more
punctual in work and meeting report deadline.

Salutica has implemented 5S concept at its facility and working environment.

The goal of 5S is to create and maintain workplace environment, improve productivity,
enable visual management and provide foundation for other lean tools. This concept has
taught me to be more organizing and take good care with my job and surrounding.

3
2.2 Practices of occupational safety and health
The practices of occupational safety and health is very important in Salutica.
Apart from introduction to the company background, the first working day in Salutica is
solely briefing on the safety and proper working procedure. The standard operational
procedure (SOP) and hazard warning could be found near the machine or working space.
Safe working procedures and practices is to ensure that everyone in the organization
knows their responsibilities and can perform their duties effectively. The standard
operating procedures help maintain the safety and health of the worker. SOP help in
guiding the employee in operating the equipment to minimize injuries. SOPs also
provide the information on the frequency of regular cleaning and maintenance of the
equipment or machine.

Proper personal protective equipment also is another practices of occupational

safety and health in Salutica. PPE is equipment that will protect workers against health
or safety risks on the job. The purpose is to reduce employee exposure to hazards, effects
of injury and can prevent accidents and injury from happening at all. PPE includes items
such as eye protection, safety footwear, finger coat, hearing protection and respiratory
protective equipment. The hearing protection is used when dealing with noise over
85dBA, for example when handling the Vibration Testing Machine. Aside from that,
when handling chemical for cosmetic testing wearing PPE such as gloves and respiratory
protective equipment is a must.

Lastly, 5s (sort, set in order, shine, standardize, sustain) is also put into practise
in order to make a more comfortable and efficient workplace.

4
3.0 INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE

The duties and responsibility given to me during the internship period is to perform
mechanical and environmental reliability tests during new development and up to
volume production. The purpose of reliability testing is to discover potential problems
with the design as early as possible and, ultimately, provide confidence that the system
meets its reliability requirements. In simple words reliability testing discovers faults and
removes them before the software is put to use. The central purpose is to ensure product
reliability and check if the product attains customer’s reliability. The main advantage of
such a test is that it will uncover bugs at an early stage, thus the faults can be corrected
soon before it gets piled up and complex to find out. This allows the attainment of a
consistent system.

I am responsible in operating Reliability Testing Machine as per instruction and

generate test report with sufficient information of the result. I was given the obligation to
conduct assigned tasks in a safe manner, wear appropriate personal protective
equipment, and obtain training prior to using machinery and equipment. This is to ensure
and minimize that accident that could occur when handling the testing machine. Proper
handling of machine also gives more accurate and consistent test result. Apart from that I
am required to participate to identify root cause of failure during test and report to
supervisor.

I also required to be responsible for maintaining good housekeeping 5S, proper

teamwork and coordination between all other departments in achieving the compliance
to company’s Quality, Environmental & Occupational, Health & Safety Management
System.

5
4.0 INDUSTRIAL PROJECT

My position as an internship employee in the Reliability Lab mainly involve in test

related task. Test are mostly conducted to verify new product development as per
customer requirements, On-Going Reliability Test (ORT) where sampling on monthly
basis (to ensure that is no process deviation during production) and requalify change of
material/suppliers/process improvement Some of the test conducted during internship
period include:

4.1 Thermal Shock Test

Thermal shock testing exposes device under test (DUT) to alternating low and high
temperatures to accelerate failures caused by thermal shocks during normal use. The
purpose of test is to simulates exposure to rapid cyclic temperature to induce
mechanical/cosmetic/electrical/ acoustical performance failures and/or solder joint
damage. The equipment used is Votsch Thermal Shock Machine.

Figure 5: Votsch Thermal Shock Machine

The test is conducted according to IEC 60068-2-14 test standard. The test is
important as most of the product that are manufactured in Salutica are being shipped
oversea where there is either extreme low or high temperature and the test is conducted
to stimulate the transfer of product from warm to cold location during shipping. Another
major reason to conduct this test is to verify the thermal shock effect to the product as

6
change in dimension or even crack could be induced when a product is exposed to
thermal shock.

One of thermal shock test conducted is to verify OLEWOLF claims that their
speaker used in Jaybird X4 headphone could withstand Thermal Shock at 55°C and -
20°C. The speaker is inserted into the Thermal Shock Machine and exposed to
temperature according to the temperature profile below:

Figure 6: Thermal shock temperature profile for Jaybird X4 (Olewolf speaker)

The result of the test is recorded in the form of report and given to the supervisor
for inspection before emailed to the customer (Logitech).

4.2 Repeated Rotating Free Fall Test

The purpose of the test is to expose the device under test to repeated mechanical stress in
random directions. The equipment used is a rotating barrel with dimensions according to
IEC 60068-2-31.

7
Figure 7: Repeated Rotating Free Fall

The importance of this test is to verify the mechanical durability, reliability of design
and assembly of the test sample. This is because under extreme circumstances
components may detach from the circuit board or the product itself.

One of the test conducted is to verify new development of FOBO Ultra Sensor
Protective Case. The protective case is developed to give the sensor extra protection
against harsh environment.

Figure 8: FOBO Ultra Protective Case

After the test only superficial damage is observed on the bottom cover. The result
of the test is emailed to FOBO Ultra project manager for reference.

8
4.3 Cable Strain Relief Bend Test
The purpose of test is to determine the reliability of cable assemblies by subjecting the
cable to stresses and forces potentially encountered under frequent usage by the end-
user. The equipment used is Cable Bending Tester.

Figure 9: Cable bending set up

The test is conducted according to Salutica TI-028 test standard. The importance
of this test is to determine the reliability of the cable by subjecting the cable to stresses
and forces potentially encountered under frequent usage.

One of the test conducted is to verify cable improvement by changing the cable
with fillers inside UEW wire material of Jaybird X4 Headset from Tectran to Vectran
fibre. The material change is because of the limitation of Tectran fibre to withstand
soldering temperature of the wire at 400ºC. This increases the number of defect in the
production line and Vectran fibre which has higher temperature tolerance has been used
as an alternative.

Figure 10: X-ray picture of cable after test

9
There is no damage observe on the cable after test and the headset unit function
as normal after the test.

4.4 Non-operating Temperature & Humidity Cyclic Test (53Hrs)

The purpose of test is to ensure that the device under test works as intended in moist
environment with temperatures changes. The equipment used is Votsch VT 4020
Climate Test Chamber.

Figure 11: 53Hrs test temperature profile

Figure 12: Votsch VT 4020

The test is conducted according to Logitech ORT Programme test standard. The
importance of the test is to verify the functionality of the product under different
temperature and humidity.

5.0 SUMMARY

In conclusion, there is many things that I have experience and learned during the
10 weeks of my Industrial Training at Salutica Allied Solution Sdn. Bhd. Throughout
this training I was able to gain new insight and more comprehensive understanding about
real working condition and practice. The internship placement also has provided me the
opportunities to develop and improve my soft and functional skills. Aside from that, I
was also able to practice right working attitudes and professionalism to increase my
employability. In my opinion, the internship programme has achieved its objective.
Besides learning something related to the subject I learn, I also been given the
opportunity to learn about the product, work as a team worker, communicate with the
engineers and supervisor in the R&D department.

Although there is a lot of thing that I had learns in Salutica, I still thinks that I
can learn more if the training period is a bit longer. There is a lot more to learn from
other department and I believe that if the training period is long enough the student could
transfer from one department to gain more knowledge. Nevertheless, I think both
Salutica and the Faculty have done a good job in making this industrial training a
success.
