The Nanggulan Formation shale is considered to have good potential for organic material
content and is a candidate as a petroleum source rock. Unfortunately, the thermal maturity
level of organic material is still immature (Winardi, et al, 2013). The Nanggulan Formation
was deposited within various depositional environments, from estuary to shallow marine
(Ansori, 2014). The result of 14 analysed samples shows TOC content of 0,36 – 1,0% and
12,8% for coaly shales, where 9 samples were categorized as fair and 2 samples were
categorized as having good source rock potential (Adibah, 2015). The geological factors such
as depositional environment, volcanic activity, and intensive orogenetic processes were
evaluated to determine influence of these factors on the resultant TOC and maturity of the
Nanggulan shale. The depositional environment of the Nanggulan, which is shallow marine
(offshore) during the Late Eocene and estuary (salt marsh) during the Early Eocene produced
sediment with higher TOC over that of the estuary (tidal flat) sediment during the Middle
Eocene. Volcanic activity during the Middle Eocene also influenced organic material
preservation because it produced abundant inorganic material. Intensive Eocene orogenesis
in fact influenced the maturity level of the Nanggulan shale that kept the formation
immature.
