BLASTING AND PAINTING PROCEDURE

1. METHOD OF CLEANING & PAINTING PROCEDURES
All shell & structural members shall be thoroughly cleaned of all loose mill scale, dirt, weld spatters,
moisture& other foreign matter & given one shop coat of primer & applied in such a manner to fill all
joints & exposed edges.
2. Method of cleaning
Surface preparation is the cleaning of structural steel to receive a shop coat of paint, to provide an
acceptable surface for un-painted weathering steel. this method is commonly used to clean structural
steel are blast cleaning power tool cleaning , hand tool cleaning & solvent cleaning
The most common specification used is those published by the steel structures painting council (SSPC).
The SSPC specifications described in detail are the methods of cleaning & degree of cleanliness
required. Below are the cleaning requirements for the above job.
SSPC-SP-10 (NEAR WHITE BLASTING-SA2.5 Swedish standard).
3.PAINT APPLICATIONS:
The application method used in the shop painting is “AIRLESS MANUAL PAINTING” the paint
manufacturers recommendation relative to spray pattern overlap gun to surface distance size of nozzles
etc.shall be observed some application may required a minimum wet film thickness .It may be
advantageous to make these measurements in order to assure adequate and consistence coating
thickness.
3. PAINT SYSTEM
As per specification grit blasted to 2.5. zinc rich epoxy primer coating as per data sheet

4. INSPECTION METHOD
DFT (dry film thickness) measurements to be made are in accordance with the specification. the dry
film thickness determination shall be performed as specified in SSPC- pa- 2 ( measurement of dry film
thickness with magnetic gauges film shall measured on 5 spots evenly over the area as per BS EN ISO
2808.
5. PAINT TEST
Adhesion test carried out by cross hatch cutter method by the client for tanks in order to determine the
adhesion strength of applied paint if necessary.

6. NON – CONFORMANCE REPORT


NCR, s to be raised for any of the above defects & follow the deposition of NCR until repaired is
carried out in satisfactory method.
