Intake Structure and Raw Water Pumping Station

Introduction:- It is proposed to construct RAW water Intake and transmission facilities to supply
raw water to Central Water Treatment Plant of Guwahati Water Supply Project (GWSP) . The
Intake Structure is planned to be constructed on the banks of river Brahmaputra. This document
provides the brief design and construction procedures/methodology to be adopted for
structural designs and execution of the civil works of the Intake Structure. Intake structure
comprises of 2 Nos. 12.0 M Diameter wells circular in shape, constructed using floating caissons.
The pumping station will be supported from the walls of the well to provide a RC platform to
support the pumps and other facilities. The pump house will be provided with electric overhead
crane to facilitate removal of the pumps and motors for maintenance.

Intake Structure:- 2 Nos. of separate 12 M Diameter circular wells have been proposed to serve
as Intake of RAW water. In the walls of the well openings and screens will be provided as per the
process requirement. The location of the proposed wells have been fixed after carrying out the
detailed

A) Hydrological studies comprising of:-

Bathymetry Survey
Silt Deposition and Scouring Study
Normal and Maximum Scouring Level analysis
Breaking Force analysis
100 Yrs Flood Level confirmation (HFL, Low Water Level, Annual average water level)

B) Geo-Technical Investigations:-

Geology of the area

Seismic History of the Area
Subsurface stratifications

Hydrological Design Data Adopted in the design as per studied carried out is as follows:-

HFL (High Flood Level) 54.49 M

LWL (Low Water Level) 34.50 M
Water Level during Soil Investigation
Start of Investigation 47.0M
End of investigation 40.7M

As per the Geo-tech investigations top bed strata comprises of Silty Sand and Mica (approx.
12.0M thick with Ø=30 Degree), scourable strata, followed by highly weathered Black Granite
with Ø=40 Degree. The well is founded on the weathered granite met with approximate level of
24.0M below highly weathered granite. As per the seismic history and IS 1893-2002 Guwahati
falls in seismic zone V (Zone factor =0.36) and is designed with importance factor 1.5.

Civil Structural design of the well will be as per IRC-78-2000 and permissible stresses in
concrete and steel will be adopted as per IS 456-2000. Tilts and shifts of the well will be kept
within the permissible limits of IRC-78-2000. Minimum thickness of the well steining will be
provided as per the structural designs / or required to minimize the sinking effort. The Pump
House base slab and super-structure will be designed as framed structure using STAAD
package for the load combinations as per IS 875-Part V. The approach bridge will be provided
in steel and will be designed as per IS-800, for IRC Class B loading.

Construction Methodology:-

The monsoon generally occurs over 3 to 4 months period from June to September where the
river level rises continuously and crests in late summer. The lowering of the water level
begins sometime in October. Pre-monsoon rains and snow melt in the mountains increases
the water discharge and water level in Brahmaputra river significantly in April and May prior
to monsoon season. October to April is the period with low variation in water discharge and
water level fluctuations.
In the presence of high water level during construction time
(
approximately 6M to 7M
),
it will be difficult to make conventional coffer
dam and do the sinking of the well from top of the platform. In the proposed method two
numbers of barges will be anchored on either side of the well location. Suitable struts will be
fixed between the barges to maintain the distance. Temporary platform
w
ill be erected between the barges and
gantry will be erected over it. The Steel caisson using steel plates and stiffening members will
be fabricated over the temporary platform . The steel caisson will be tested for leakages by
filling water and leaky join
ts will be caulked with lead wool or welded. The steel caisson is
lifted up using the pully blocks suspended from the gantry, the temporary platform is removed and caissons is lowered till it floats. Once the caisson is
placed correctly at the position (Barges may be shifted by paying/tightening the anchor ropes), the water will be pumped in the caisson / small quantity
of concrete may be poured for increasing the weight to overcome the buoyancy partly so that position of the caisson can be adjusted till such time it has
acquired sufficient grip and position has been checked and found correct. The river bed gets scoured as caisson reaches the bed, more stakes should be
added to make allowance for this and caisson is grounded only when it achieves critical depth. (Grip after which well will not get displaced even when it
is not held from the barges) The caisson is expected to sink 30Cms to 60Cms under its own weight. Top of the caisson is ensured to be always above the
water level in the river. The concreting is carried out in the caisson after it has acquired the critical grip and one lift of the steining (1.2 to 1.75 M) is cast
above the top of the caisson . Further sinking is carried out by dredging for which winches are mounted on the barges and grabs work on pully
supported by Gantry. In the weathered granite heavy chisels / local blasting will be used to break the rock to progress the sinking. Using above
methodology the well will be sunk to its final level. Interior of the well will be dewatered and drilling with rock anchors as per the designs will be
provided. The bottom plug will be provided as per IRC-78-2000 using Tremie and top of this at Invert level of the wet well sump RC water sealing slab will
be provided. After the completion of the well top platform for the support of the pumps and super-structure will be constructed using conventional
Fabrication of cutting edge and steining
staging and shuttering.
