DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Ofice of Viwr General 12 February 2018 Rev. Fr. Jerry Coyle c/o Ruben and Tonya Ortiz Albuquerque NM 87111-5732 Dear Fr. Jerry, | am writing to you as a follow-up to our telephone conversation on Thursday, February 8, 2018. The Review Board for the Diocese of Sioux City met on Monday, February 5, 2018 and discussed your request for advice and guidance regarding your living situation. It was the consensus of the Review Board that you should pursue securing residence in a Nursing Home/Senior Living Center that could admit you to its Assisted Living ies. This recommendation is based on two major considerations. First, having moved to the Albuquerque area in 1986, you have now lived there for over 30 years, have acclimated to the climate and weather conditions of that area, and all your friends and components of your “support system” are there. To move back to lowa would require a dramatic readjustment to the climate, as well as a complete rebuilding of your network of friends and associates. Neither of which is impossible, but for an 84-year-old man such a move would inevitably be physically and emotionally very difficult. Secondly, of greater concern is your self-revealed history of sexual contact with approximately 50 boys. When you came forward and informed Bishop Soens of your situation, you reported that for a period of about 20 years you victimized boys who ranged from 7th to 10th 191 Jadaon Sree + PO, Box 079 + Si iy, ow 511023870 “Gases via) Roe naaL Paw im BIBDET rope lz grgde, which means they were most likely between the ages of 11 to 16%and would now be estimated to range from 45 to 70 years of age. There is great concern that should you return to the Diocese, that one or more of these men could potentially encounter you and be retraumatized by the memories that would surface. The Review Board is grateful to Ruben Ortiz and his family for their kindness and generosity to you, and their willingness to welcome you into their home on an interim basis following your November traffic accident and subsequent decision to relinquish your driver’s license. While acknowledging the years of counseling and the apparent success you have experienced in living out celibate chastity since moving to Albuquerque, the Review Board recommends in the strongest of terms that you do not continue to reside at the Ortiz home. What the Diocese is prepared to do for you is to raise your monthly assistance from $1000 to $1575. It is hoped that, in addition to Social Security and Medicaid, this increased allowance would be sufficient for you to afford the cost of living in an institution providing Assisted Living housing. |_am sending essentially this same letter and message to Ruben and Tonya. After you have discussed this with them, | would be grateful if you would inform me of what you decide to do regarding your housing Sincerely yours in Christ our Lord, Fr, Bradley C.
