Topic: “Design of High Gain Rectenna for Wireless power

Transfer Application”
(Research Project Proposal)
ABSTRACT
Wireless power transmission is a substitute energy solution to supply power to the electrical system without
wired connection. We will present an antenna array design which is the critical component in a rectenna
system. The design Rectenna consists of a 1*4 patch antenna array and a rectifier that will operate in the
industrial band i-e 2.4-2.45 GHz which simply recycles RF energy at 2.4-2.45 GHz, from nearby Wi-
Fi/WLAN devices and convert it to useful DC power. The physical model comprises of antenna, filters, and
rectifier which will design on FR-4 substrate with a thickness of 1.6mm. The design will give a high gain
and an efficient energy by varying the power which makes the Rectenna suitable for WPT application.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
Nowadays, most energy resources are gas, oil and nuclear industries. These sources of energy are not
guaranteed to last very long age and their prices are not regular. Besides that, it is non-friendly environment.
Alternative energy resource that avoid the disadvantages of current energy resources is needed. There have
been an efforts on energy harvesting in order to find cleaner, greener and safer energy resource. There
are many resources from which energy can be harvested such as solar energy, wind energy, vibration,
and electromagnetic ambient signals. The main objective of our research will focus mainly on extracting
energy from electromagnetic ambient signals using rectifying antenna (rectenna). In order for the rectenna
to harvest ambient signals and supply a DC voltage to low power electrical and electronic devices, the
principle of wireless power transfer (WPT) is applied. Rectenna is considered as a very important element
in wireless power transmission application as it can determine how efficient is the power being transfer by
using MP-DC conversion efficiency.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF RESEARCH:

The aim and objective of the Research are:

 Design of 2.4 patch array antenna and a rectifier

 High antenna gain compared to comparative design
 Good efficiency
 Comparing the simulated and measured results

LITERATURE REVIEW
Nowadays the WPT systems are popularly used for variety of purposes not only in military but also in typical
life. The demand of offering high efficiency of power transmission process leads to a problem for finding
new methods to implement those system. Over a hundred years ago, the idea of Wireless power transmission
WPT that was theorized , developed and demonstrated by Nikola Tesla in the early 1900s have known a great
advance and successful impact in many real life appliances. Then it has been a topic of continued interests
since the last several decades [1].
Wireless power transmission is the transsmission of electrical energy from a power source to an electrical
load without wired conation.it is useful in cases where communicating cables are problematic, or is defecting
similar difficulties. In particular, a WPT system converts direct current to micro waves and transmitted in to
space, a system that requires power needs to receive and convert to microwaves back to beneficial DC energy.
The device use for this reception and conversation is called a Rectenna (rectifying antenna), this term is
derivative of the fact that a Rectenna is comprised of an antenna united with a rectifying circuit
The Rectenna device was created by W.C. Brown in his groundbreaking work in WPT in the 1960s
Raytheon Technology Company in United States of America [2] obviously. WPT could transform our
energy sector, our IT industry, Environment, Medical and every aspect of human life. First the proposed
SPS (solar Power satellite) would bring clean energy from natural sunlight in space to power Earth without
using the resources of our planet. This would allow them to receive solar light 99% of the year
[3].Recently, several Rectenna devices have been proposed in the literature investigating several operating
frequencies [4].
