and we need to be prepared to work amongst
the people, Aksheen said.
She was selected on the basis of her essay
on the issue of communication challenges faced
by the youths in 2019 in the wake of social
media, fake news and other technology-related
challenges.
“Dealing with the rise of fake news and its
dissemination through numerous sources that
we cannot trust all the time, is one big challenge
of my generation, and I am committed to focus
upon as the Youth MP for Tamaki,” Aksheen
said.
“Aksheen’s essay on the importance of
freedom of expression and tolerance for
different viewpoints was exceptional.

Auckland on Monday, November 26,
signed a pact to foster academic exchange
and research collaboration, faculty exchange
and visiting/adjunct appointments, student
mobility, the premier Indian institute said.
As per the Memorandum of Understanding
- the first strategic partnership of University of
Auckland with a higher educational institution
in India - the two educational establishments
would explore opportunities for research
in healthcare technologies, new materials,
cybersecurity and Artificial Intelligence.
“The SPARC program of India is of specific
interest to us. There are several research
areas which are of mutual interest for both
faculty and students,” Jenny Dixon, Deputy
Vice-Chancellor, Strategic Engagement at
University of Auckland, was quoted as saying
in an IIT Kharagpur release.
Prior to visiting India, Ms Dixon had robust
discussions with the Indian High Commissioner
to NZ Mr Sanjiv Kohli and Honorary Consul of
India in Auckland Mr Bhav Dhillon regarding
the MoU.
The MoU also involves the scope of outreach
centres at IIT Kharagpur and Auckland
representing various prestigious higher
educational institutions of both countries.
“We are the nodal institution for New
Zealand for the Ministry of Human Resources
Development. We can coordinate with other
Centre at IIT Kharagpur and an India Centre
at Auckland” said IIT Kharagpur Director P P
Chakrabarti.
A similar Center is functional in China for
eight universities from New Zealand focusing
on teaching programs, research collaborations,
students and faculty exchange. The proposal
would be discussed with the governments of
both countries.
The two institutes will further explore
possibilities of a Dual Masters and Doctoral
programmes and a collaborative B.Tech. -
M.Tech. Programme.
“At IIT Kharagpur, we have been striving
to ensure global exposures to gain in-depth
knowledge in core disciplines, as well as
collaboration with leaders in various areas of
academia.
“The thrust areas in consideration for this
collaboration are also in concurrence with
our country to make giant leaps in healthcare,
economy and quality of life,” remarked
Baidurya Bhattacharya, Dean, International
Relations, IIT Kharagpur.
At present Indian students from third
largest student community in New Zealand’s
academia with enrolments mostly in science,
engineering and business. The country has
an advanced policy setting for international
students particularly in terms of post-studies
employment drive. They can apply for a 3-year
work visa after completing their degree.

90-day trial period to go as govt pushes for employment law changes

past with New Zealand First finally
giving in to its coalition partners
Labour and Green’s wishes to scrap
the provision.
The controversial Workplace
Relations Amendment Bill was
re-introduced in parliament on
November 26th for a second reading.
Earlier when the bill was
introduced in parliament, coalition
partner New Zealand First had held
some reservations saying that the bill
was a “work in progress.”
Today, that “work in progress,”
seems to have finished well, with all
release and describing NZ First’s
current stand of being “very happy”
with the proposed bill.
The bill will end 90-day trials for
bigger employers, restores rights
to tea and meal breaks and grants
unions more access to workplaces.

a select committee without any
material changes in September,
at which point New Zealand First

a “work in progress”.
However, the changes proposed in
the bill will be affecting the bigger

consistent outcomes in New Zealand

However, National had earlier
denounced the proposed bill saying
that the changes will take New
Zealand back to 1970s when the
unions had a seemingly a free run at
workplaces.

Changes to post-study work

he much-anticipated changes to
the post-study work visas that
the government has announced
earlier on August 8, whereby doing
away the employer assisted post-study
work visas at all level of courses, will
be coming to effect from Monday,
November 26.
It is important to note that the
Immigration Minister Iain Lees-
Galloway has announced earlier on
August 8 that it will be repealing the
employer-assisted work visa, in order
to take away the disproportionate level
of power, currently in the hands of
employers, and used asymmetrically by
some unscrupulous employers, so as to
bring relief for the international students.
Any new applicants coming to New
Zealand for study would not be getting
this visa.
The page on employer-assisted work
visa on the website of Immigration New
Zealand (INZ) also states that this visa is
no longer offered.
The international students who were
already in New Zealand on a post-study
work visa (employer-assisted) will now
be eligible to apply to INZ for an open
work visa.
There will be a fee for the change of
label and would be valid for the same
amount of time remaining on the original
employer-assisted work visa.
It’s another matter that it is not clear
how this change of requirement will
impact the already overburdened INZ
service delivery.
It’s important to note that INZ is
already facing an unprecedented burden
on its ability to deliver quality service in
a timely manner.
Recently a story in RadioNZ reported
that INZ admits that customers have
endured unnecessarily long wait times
on the phone and service delivery.
This was after INZ has culled about
400 jobs by shutting down offshore visa
processing centres.
The then restructure within INZ
was stated to bring major changes in
Auckland offices with some significant
relocation of staffs.
It would be interesting to see how the
deadline of November 26 for cut-off
dates for the change of visa would augur
on INZ’s ability to deliver timely service.
However, delay or no delay, a lot
of international students currently on
employer-assisted post-study work visa
would breathe temporary relief with the
abrogation of employer-assisted work
visa.
The relief is temporary as it is still not
clear how it will impact on the ability of
those students who are keen to pursue
their chances of getting permanent
residency in the country.
Those on essential skill work visa have
not anything to do with the November 26
cut-off date.

Indian Association (AIA) – two of the oldest
and largest Indian associations - to clear the
air on the controversy around his perceived

The Associations had expressed their
concerns on the content of the leaked-tape of
the conversation between Mr Bridges and his
then colleague National MP Jamie Lee-Ross in
a press release on October 23.
“NZICA would like to have discussions
with the Leader of the National Party, and
the President of the National Party,” the press
release had then stated, putting forward an
explicit desire to meet with Mr Bridges and
address the concerns of the Indian community.
Following that request, Mr Bridges was able
to meet with key leaders of the two associations
on Monday, November 19, and expressed his
regret on the content of the recording – an
explanation that has been largely accepted and
understood. Kiwi-Indian MP Kanwaljit Singh
Bakshi was also present at the meeting at the
Gandhi Centre.

our point of view it was great that he was open
and honest about the mistake that has happened

and social media promotions were
able to get 300 people to the Mahatma
Gandhi Centre for the charity worthy
event.

‘Old is Gold 10’ music show

rich mix of old and new voices
mesmerised listeners at the Old is Gold
music show earlier last weekend at the
Dorothy Winstone Centre.
A brainchild of renowned musician-singer
Amit Sengupta, ‘Old is Gold 10’ was the
fourteenth show since its inception in 2002, and
it did not fail to give the audience yet another
good musical evening.
The show featured songs from as old as
1950s Bollywood films in the voices of some
really talented Kiwi-Indian singers. What was
special about this event was the surprising entry
of some lesser-known names in the community
who lead the audience to wonder, ‘where have
they been all this while?’
One of the highlightswas Sandhya Rao who
sang her solo on the stage ‘Maine Shayad
Tumhein’ and then her duet with Amit Sengupta
‘Dil Todne Wale’. The voices complemented
each other, and it was as if legendary singer
Lata Mangeshkar had dawned herself singing
the song in the face of singer Sandhya Rao.
Although most of the amazing songs were
not so popular and dated back to the black and
white Bollywood films era, it did mesmerise the
lovers of the golden era of music.
Another such face was The Indian
Weekender’s Swati Sharma, who was also
the emcee of the show and made her singing
debut in New Zealand stage with ‘Saawan
Ka Mahina’ duet along with Moneesh from
the 1967 hit film Milan, originally sung in the
voices of Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar. Ms
Sharma and Moneesh’s performance received a
thunder of applause from the audience.
Other talents who wowed the spectators were
Shibashish Dutta singing ‘Ye kya hua’ from
the film Amar Prem, ‘Awaz De Kahan’ Ho by
Sucheta, ‘Naja Kahin Ab’ by Rachit, ‘Sajan re
Jhoot mat Bolo’ by Ismail, ‘Milan hai kisi ka
Jhumka’ by Anwesha and a few more.
Other renowned singers voices that echoed
in the auditorium were Md Arif, Joseph, Vidya,
Srisha Hubert- making the show a sure 180

An important part of this show besides a pool
of new talent, who bowled the audience over

Congress New Zealand (IOCNZ) held a
meeting, along with the representatives
of their youth wing, to discuss ways and means
of mobilising support for the Congress Party,
in the upcoming five-state and general elections
in India.

five states –– Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh,
Mizoram, Rajasthan and Telangana ––
undergoing the election process for state-

the centre due in March-April 2019.

Initially, the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party

Narendra Modi, has upped the ante of wooing

The event was hosted by Minister of Ethnic
Communities Jenny Salesa who acknowledged
the presence of the community leaders

The $23.27c kindness that changed
the life of a migrant forever

Last Christmas, 89-year-old Parbhu
Nathoo, along with his almost same aged
wife Devi Nathoo, overviewed their 21
descendants spanning four generations
and reflected on their family’s seven
decades of life in New Zealand.
This Christmas, Jack and Devi, married
73 years, and now enduring a health-
related, heart-wrenching separation,
with both docked in two different homes
in Auckland – a separation that in Jack’s
own words feels endless.
“It’s more like an eternity,” Jack who
remains at the family home, said.
Theirs’s is a story of indomitable
human spirit, courage, ambitions,
hard-work, aspirations, enduring pain,
overcoming challenges, the satisfaction
of a fulfilled migrant-life.
The Indian Weekender teams-up with a
local Auckland based writer Bill Harrison,
who in his own words always remains on
the hunt for such inspirational stories, to
write, uncover, and present to the world,
to bring out the story of probably one
of the oldest, if not the oldest, surviving
Kiwi-Indian settler in this country.
This story is a tribute to the enterprising
and enduring spirit of our Kiwi-Indian
migrant community who, if not having
sailed like Jack and Devi in 1946, but
definitely embarks upon an uncharted
territory to create a better life for
themselves and their future generations.  recalls Jack.
Beginning the Pacific journey…
Friends and family confirm ‘hard reality’ is
Parbhu Nathoo’s life code.
Few would credit imagination as the silent
partner to this once-wordless teen’s seven
decades life as a postwar Kiwi-Indian.
Having sailed from Bombay to firstly
Singapore in 1946, the then 17-year-old and
newly-wed was fresh from his family farm in
Karadi, Gujarat.
Lying on his bed and envisaging the Pacific
venture into which parents Manga and Sukhi
had raised $170 sponsorship, the-then labourer
recalled: “Thankfully I was fearless, mainly as
I lacked the capacity to foresee the challenges
ahead.”
Forward Friendly
Now nearly 90, the great-grandfather
relives his Kiwi immersion: “It was like I
was switching between two lives every few
minutes but people seemed to come from
nowhere to offer help.”
Always a self-driven extrovert, Parbhu
(Jack) was to fully retire from his petrol
business proprietorship when he turned 80.
The business is continued by son, Ronnie
and wife Nanette along with their son Anil.
Jack is valued as a father figure among one
of the first families from their homeland to
operate a BP service station NZ franchise.
The ship-bonding between the
three fellow boat-migrants
Jack had left Indian shores along with
Rama and Ranchod – two fellows of similar
enterprising attitude – and with whom he
shared a deflected journey, first to Singapore,
then to Australia and eventually to Wellington.
The memories of those two fellow travellers
are still clear in Jack’s minds when Bill
Harrison, first spoke to him in his North Shore-
based home.
To cherish those memories, almost seven
decades after, especially when the life of one of
those two was tragically cut-short, (Ranchod
passed away in a tragic accident barely a few
of years after finally landing in New Zealand)
is indeed a remarkable reflection of Jack’s
kindness.
“We were disappointed with Singapore
as our first-intended new settlement,” Jack
recalled.
Within five days the trio was smuggled
aboard by the friendly Indian crew of Curfu
– an English hospital ship bound for Darwin,
Australia. Innocently wearing street clothes
instead of crew uniform, the three were outed
as stowaways while socialising among patients
and paid-passengers.
“We were handled like such gentlemen,”

Reaching Sydney, the lads became Sydney
Council street-sweepers for 25c a day.
“Enough for little bread and butter...”
Within four days Jack, Rama and Ranchod
had sourced the NZ-bound vessel MV
Wanganella.
Even now, Jack’s voice softens in recalling
Rama’s gift of $23.27c, meaning all three
could sail from Sydney Harbour.  and keep looking forward.” By year’s end
If it was not for Rama’s generosity, then
possibly Jack’s Kiwi odyssey would not have
unfolded as it eventually did, or at least the
trio would not have experienced the journey
together.
Real Settlement begins...
Five days later the novice travellers berthed
in Wellington where each sensed the upcoming
breeze of his own destiny. Cheerfully they
parted company with at least two to briefly
reunite years later. Unfortunately, Ranchod
passed away six years later in 1952 following
a tragic accident when aged in his early 20s.
Rama lived a full life and died in 1984.
Jack credits Indian culture for his welcome
by Nana’ the central city fruitier.
Within a month of bedding-down on
his host’s floorboard-laid mattress, Jack
was fronting 5 a.m. starts as a harbourside
maintenance hand. Any spare time was
devoted to practising the dictionary.
“I learnt mainly by listening, there were no
formal lessons. As each new word came along
I practised it, treasured it.”
Proudly, Jack counted himself as among
NZ’s then-300 Indian population, 130 of
whom were Wellington-based. After three
months at harbourside, this lifetime car and
sports enthusiast became a general worker
with Todd Motors, Porirua.
After eighteen months of first arriving in
New Zealand, and mindful of Devi, his new
wife awaiting call-out from Gujarat, Jack
bought his own fruit shop in Waipukerau,
Hawkes Bay.

“It was $600 which I’d borrowed and saved.
You must already imagine yourself successful,
and decide you’ll fix any problems as they
come along.”
The pair reunited in 1949, with Devi having
sailed out alone and Jack having achieved
three years overall ‘investment’ in their
immersion. Devi took responsibility for the
banking and clerical records related to their
subsequent homes and enterprises. The two
were ‘betrothed in advance’ at age five by both
sets of well-meaning parents. They had met
only on brief occasions prior to marriage.
“Devi took a few months to settle but when
newcomers commit to staying, they set goals
1950, Jack and Devi were parents to Ronnie,
now aged 68 and with an extensive retailing
background.
The Early 1950s
Devi was celebrated as the region’s only
resident Indian woman, though her spouse
half-joked “that fruit shop had us working like
donkeys just to earn a basic living!”
1956
The family moved to Taupo with its then-
1800 populace, buying water in $4-apportioned
carry tanks. The Nathoos settled into a ‘new’
fruit shop which soon became a general store,
later earning itself the area’s first New World
franchise.
1969
A partnership with three fellow investors
in the on-site development of Suncourt, a
16-outlet retail Mecca embracing the Nathoos’
grocery.
The 1970s
The Nathoos departed on 36,000-mile
motoring expedition in Africa and Europe.
Touring 29 countries in their American
Chevrolet, driving was shared between Jack
and then-teenaged daughter Bharti. Born in
1962, she is the youngest, following Indira,
Vanita and Ronnie. “The trip and others later
were unbelievable,” relived Jack. “Race and
background of every style right there in front
of us.”

1982
The family relocated to opportunity-laden
Auckland with its scope for marrying their
offspring within their culture.
Jack and Devi bought four houses to
accommodate the now-13 descendants. Their
main enterprise continues as the re-named BP
2go Motor Centre, 50 Northcote Road, with its
credo including forceful marketing combining
creative management.
1992   
Aged early 60s, Jack underwent heart
surgery though somehow continues defying its
seven-year use-by date.
These Days
Among Jack and Devi’s son and three
daughters is a variety of awards based within
community, commerce, and industry. The early
1990s saw Ronnie’s wife Nanette became the
first lady officer (within the Auckland Indian
Association (Currently Chair, Law and Order).
Nanette’s other volunteering spans New
Zealand Indian Central Association, crime
prevention, Pasifika counsel, Hospice, Rotary
club initiative and advocacy of positive ageing.
These commitments led to her being
honoured Queen’s Service Medal 90th
Honours List.

result of the PMSA programme.
The PMSA programme is funded by the
New Zealand Government and administered by
Education New Zealand (ENZ). The PMSA was
first launched five years ago and was extended
to Latin America with the launch of the PMSLA
in 2016. The August round 2018/19 PMSLA
awardees have been announced, alongside
the names of PMSA awardees.  A total of
$1,408,578 was awarded this round for 2018/19
covering both individual and group awardees.
To date, there have been 1,855 PMSA and
PMSLA awardees. The scholarship covers study
and internship costs and makes a significant
contribution to travel and accommodation
expenses of approximately NZ$ 270 a week.
The newly announced awardees – 49
individuals, and 17 groups totalling 123 –
are either recent graduates or come from
universities, institutes of technology and
polytechnics or private training enterprises
across New Zealand. They will travel to
destinations including China, India, Viet Nam,
Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Sri Lanka and Singapore
to study, carry out research or undertake
internships – spanning from four weeks to one
year.
“The PMSA establishes personal
relationships that strengthen ties between Asia
and New Zealand. As a small trading nation in
the Asia-Pacific region, this is important for us,
helping build a shared future,” Jacinda Arden
said. The Prime Minister says that ongoing
academic relationships and new business
opportunities are two she would like to see as a
result from the programme.
The awardees are welcomed and supported
by diplomatic communities in New Zealand
and offshore which is highly valued by the
Government.
Individual PMSA awardees will carry out
programmes including a one-year Master’s
in Management at the National University
of Singapore, a 12-week internship at
SmartBlkTrade in Hong Kong as a Machine
Learning Engineer, and a 6-month study of
Mandarin Chinese at the Mandarin Training
Centre at National Taiwan Normal University
in Taipei, Taiwan.

Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), or free trade
agreement (FTA), will be held on December 11-12 and both countries will
try to conclude the negotiations in 2019, a senior official said on Wednesday.
Addressing the India-Korea Business Partnership Forum 2018 here
organised by Indian industry chamber CII and the Korea International Trade
Association (KITA), Commerce Ministry Additional Secretary Sanjay
Chaddha said that a committee will be constituted shortly under the recently
formed India-Korea Future Strategy Group to specifically operationalise joint
cooperation in research and development (R&D) projects.
He said the India-Korea CEPA signed in 2010 was India’s first FTA entered
into outside the developed economies of the Organisation for Economic Co-
operation and Development (OECD).
“Both countries are also involved in negotiations for the RCEP (Regional
Comprehensive Economic Partnership) which involves a lot of sensitivities,”

has touched down on Mars

fter seven months of traveling through space, the NASA
InSight mission has landed on Mars. A few minutes after
landing, InSight sent the official "beep" to NASA to
signal that it was alive and well, including a photo of the Martian
surface where it landed.
Mission Control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory
exploded into celebratory applause and cheers after the
touchdown was confirmed. The landing was watched around the
world and even broadcast live on the Nasdaq Stock Market tower
in New York City's Times Square.
During a post-landing NASA press conference, the astronauts

InSight, or Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations,
Geodesy and Heat Transport, is going to explore a part of Mars
that we know the least about: its deep interior.
It launched May 5. InSight will spend two years investigating
the interior where the building blocks below the planet's surface
recorded its history.
To reach Mars, InSight cruised 301,223,981 miles through
space, followed by two cube satellites.
The suitcase-size spacecraft, called MarCO, are the first cube
satellites to fly into deep space. MarCO shared data about InSight
when it entered the Martian atmosphere for the landing.
"We've studied Mars from orbit and from the surface since
1965, learning about its weather, atmosphere, geology and surface
chemistry," said Lori Glaze, acting director of the Planetary

The landing
InSight robotically guided itself through the landing. The
landing itself is a tricky maneuver. NASA engineers don't call it
"seven minutes of terror" for nothing.
In less time than it takes to hard-boil an egg, InSight slowed

Only 40% of missions sent to the Red Planet by any agency
have been successful. Part of this is due to the thin Martian
atmosphere, which is only 1% of Earth's, so there's nothing to
slow something trying to land on the surface.
Like the Phoenix spacecraft, InSight had a parachute and retro
rockets to slow its descent through the atmosphere, and three
legs suspended from the lander absorbed the shock of touching
down on the surface.
But the engineers prepared the spacecraft to land during a dust
storm if need be.

Gavaskar said it was difficult to comment on
Powar’s role from a distance but made it clear
that the reason given for Mithali’s dropping was

accept whatever the reason was.
"They said they wanted to stick with the same
team, I don’t think that’s a good enough excuse.
You can’t drop someone like Mithali Raj,” said the

Belur Math
S
et very attractively amid palms and manicured lawns, this
large religious centre is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna
Mission, inspired by 19th-century Indian sage Ramakrishna
Paramahamsa, who preached the unity of all religions. Its
centrepiece is the 1938 Ramakrishna Mandir, which somehow
manages to look like a cathedral, Indian palace and Istanbul’s
Aya Sofya all at the same time. Several smaller shrines near
the Hooghly riverbank include the Sri Sarada Devi Temple,
entombing the spiritual leader’s wife, Sarada.
Botanical Gardens
D espite being an awkward journey by public transport,
Kolkata’s lovely 109-hectare Botanical Gardens makes
for a great place to escape from the city’s frazzling sounds and
smells. Founded in 1786, the gardens – home to more than 12,000
plant species – played an important role in cultivating tea bushes
smuggled in from China by the British, long before the drink
became a household commodity. The most touted attraction in
the park is the 250-year-old ‘world’s largest banyan tree’.

ndia’s biggest and oldest major museum celebrated its
bicentenary in February 2014. It’s mostly a lovably old-
fashioned place that fills a large colonnaded palace ranged
around a central lawn. Extensive exhibits in various galleries
include fabulous sculptures dating back two millennia (notably
the lavishly carved 2nd-century-BC Bharhut Gateway), Egyptian
mummies, relics from the ancient Indus Valley civilisation of
Harappa and Mohenjo-daro, pickled human embryos, dangling
whale skeletons and some 37 types of opium in the library-like
commercial botany gallery.
New Market
Marked by a distinctive red-brick clocktower, this enormous
warren of market halls dates to 1874, but was substantially
rebuilt after a 1980s fire. By day, handicraft touts can be a minor
annoyance, and the crowds can swell in the evenings, especially
on weekends. It’s more engrossing just after dawn, when there’s
a harrowing (and a wee morbid) fascination in watching the
arrival of animals at the meat market, with its grizzly chopping
blocks, blood-splattered floors and pillared high ceilings.
Shaheed Minar
D
ominating the upper Maidan near Esplanade bus
station, Shaheed Minar is a 48m-tall round-topped
hollow column commemorating martyrs of the Indian
Independence Movement, though it had originally been
built in 1828 to commemorate a British military commander
named David Ochterlony.
It’s no longer possible to climb the upper ramparts of the tower.
Circus performers, political firebrands and dealers in mystic
medicines frequently entertain crowds around the column’s
base. Things pick up at this flea market, especially on Saturday
afternoons.

St Paul’s Cathedral
A rguably Kolkata’s most iconic Gothic superstructure,
decorated with a central crenellated tower, St Paul’s
would look quite at home in Cambridgeshire but cuts an equally
impressive profile against Kolkata’s skyline. Built between 1839
and 1847, it has a remarkably wide nave and features a stained-
glass west window by pre-Raphaelite maestro, Sir Edward
Burne-Jones.
Mother Teresa’s Motherhouse
A regular flow of mostly Christian pilgrims visits the
Missionaries of Charity’s ‘Motherhouse’ to pay homage
at Mother (and now Saint) Teresa’s large, sober tomb. A small
adjacent museum room displays Teresa’s worn sandals and
battered enamel dinner bowl. Located upstairs is the room where
she worked and slept from 1953 to 1997, preserved in all its
simplicity. From Sudder St, walk for about 15 minutes along
Alimuddin St, then two minutes’ south. It’s in the second alley
to the right.
Howrah Bridge
The Howrah Bridge is located between
the twin cities of Howrah and Kolkata
in West Bengal, India. The 705m
long and 30m wide bridge was built
in 1943 over the Hooghly River. It
was rechristened as Rabindra Setu
in June 1965, after the first Indian
Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore.
The bridge is commonly called
Howrah Bridge. The Howrah Bridge
was commissioned in February 1943.
The Howrah Bridge is a suspension type
balanced cantilever bridge. It has a central span
of 1500ft between the main towers. The anchor and cantilever
arms are 325ft and 468ft long respectively. The suspended span
has a length of 564ft. Main towers are 280ft high above the
monoliths and 76ft apart at the top. The bridge deck measures
71ft in width and features two footpaths of 15ft on either side.

AYUSHMANN KHURRANA:
Life is a great leveller

aving tasted back-to-back success at the box-office
with Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho and then facing
the harsh reality of his wife Tahira Kashyap’s breast
cancer, actor Ayushmann Khurrana now sees things through
a different prism and has called life a “great leveller”.
Tahira revealed her affliction on September 22, posting on
Instagram that she was detected with DCIS (ductal carcinoma
in situ) in her right breast with high grade malignant cells.
Asked how was he balancing his professional and
personal life, Ayushmann said: “It was very difficult. I have
realised that life is never perfect. You have to celebrate the
imperfections of life and you have to accept that there would
be a void in your life every time, it cannot be perfect. So,
this was just a small imperfection according to us. We are
taking it as it is.”
The 34-year-old actor added: “I had two back-to-back
films coming and I was going through a professional high
and I was wondering life is so beautiful and suddenly this
happened, so it is a great leveller. Life is a great leveller.”
On Karva Chauth this year, Ayushmann kept a fast for the
good health and long life of Tahira, whom he proudly calls
his inspiration.
“I am glad I have a partner like Tahira who is very
brave, strong, who is an inspiration. I have started seeing
life through a different prism,” said the actor, who has two
children with Tahira – Virajveer and Varushka.
“I was giving her my time, of course. In the morning I
was promoting my films, in the nights I was with her in the
hospital... It is not easy.”
Making his debut in the world of films in 2012 with Vicky
Donor, Ayushmann in just six years has carved a niche
for himself in Bollywood with movies like Dum Laga Ke
Haisha, Nautanki Saala!, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal
Savdhan, Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho – a film that has now
crossed the Rs 200 crore mark worldwide.
Asked what he thinks about getting tagged as an
unconventional hero in Bollywood, Ayushmann said: “You
have to be successful, that’s it. Conventional, unconventional,
action hero, comedy star – you have to be successful in
your zone. All I am looking for is a fine combination of
critical and commercial acclaim. Whether conventional or
unconventional – does not matter.”
At a time when several stars were trying their luck in the
industry with formula films, Ayushmann dabbled in genres
as different as chalk and cheese.
Did that give him an edge over others?
“You make your own formula. I think that’s my own
formula of doing films which have no reference point.
India does not have a reference point for Vicky Donor or
Andhadhun or even Badhaai Ho. I am proud of the choices
I have been making and I have made my own space in the
industry,” he said.
But he stressed that adding a sprinkle of your own identity
in films is important to him.
“You bring something of your own into a film. You
give a bit of yourself to every film you do. I had an edge
in Andhadhun because, being a musician, I knew how to
play a guitar so it was not difficult for me to learn a musical
instrument,” said the actor, who has even given his vocals
for songs like Pani da rang and Saddi galli aaja.

The programme involves senior citizens from
Shanti Niwas – a charitable trust that primarily

the community – teaming up with NZ police and
going out to meet local retailers and businesses
