Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form for
which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are
provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, and improve the software.
Open source licenses often meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open
source software is available within the public domain. Open source software is very often
developed in a public, collaborative manner. Open-source software is the most prominent
example of open-source development and often compared to (technically defined) user-generated
content or (legally defined) open content movements.[1]

Open source hardware ( POSH ) consists of physical artifacts of technology designed and
offered in the same manner as free and open source software (FOSS). Open source hardware is
part of the open source culture movement and applies a like concept to a variety of components.
The term usually means that information about the hardware is easily discerned. Hardware
design (i.e.schematics, bill of materials and PCB layout data) in addition to the software
that drives the hardware are all released with the FOSS approach .
Since the rise of reconfigurable programmable logic devices, sharing of logic designs has been a
form of open source hardware. Instead of sharing the schematics, HDL code (as in hardware
description language) is shared. HDL descriptions are commonly used to set up system-on-a-
chip systems either in field-programmable gate arrays or directly in application-specific
integrated circuit designs. HDL modules, when distributed, are called semiconductor intellectual
property cores, or IP cores.

Meaning of hardware
Hardware refers to a physical piece of a computer. This could be a hard drive, monitor, memory
chip, or CPU. The key idea is that the item is something you can touch. This compares to
software which is not tangible in any way. You can't pick it up or weigh it. Yet, without
software, hardware is useless.
Typical examples of hardware include the computer you're using to view this page, the hard
drive that has this page stored on it, and the mouse you used to click on a link to bring you to this
page.

THE LATEST OPEN SOURCE OPERATING SYSTEM (OS)
Open-source means that you can get the source code of the software for free (source code is the
code of the program written in a certain programing language). Operating system is the software
that you use to operate your PC (like Windows or Linux)

Open source basically means that people from all over the world help create programs or even an
operating system for the public. So, with that said, Linux is the #1 opensource operating system.

The most popular group of Open Source Operating Systems (or FLOSS OS) is Linux, but there
are many other FLOSS OSs out there.
Here is a short list:
Linux ( http://www.linux.org ) (note there are several versions)
BSD ( http://www.bsd.org ) (note there are several versions)
Solaris ( http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/ )

An open source application software is something for which the source code is available for
download and anybody can modify it and release subsequent versions of the same provided they
mention the version of the source using which they modified.

PERVASIVE COMPUTING
The trend towards an information environment in which users have access to ICTs throughout
the environment. This trend is particularly associated with the growth of wireless technologies
that allow users to access online information and services remotely and synchronise data
between different computers.

- Ambient Devices produced an "orb", a "dashboard", and a "weather beacon": these decorative
devices receive data from a wireless network and report current events, such as stock prices and
the weather.
-"Dangling String," installed at Xerox PARC This was a piece of string attached to a stepper
motor and controlled by a LAN connection; network activity caused the string to twitch, yielding
a peripherally noticeable indication of traffic.
-Datafountain is an internet enabled water fountain used to display money currency rates, created
