Installation Guide for PSU subrack (1 HU) and PDU into
ION® Optical Master Unit

1. SAFETY

Regarding the safety precautions required for the installation procedure as well as all
other important warnings, please refer to the User’s Manual of the ION-M Optical
Master Unit.

2. MOUNTING

2.1. MOUNTING ORDER

The following units / plates have to be mounted from the front into the Master Unit
rack in the following order as illustrated in the figure below:

· At the lowest level of the rack, use two guide rails to mount the PSU subrack 1
HU [1] 1) If the individual PSU plug-in units are not yet installed, plug them in
separately (see also figure 2-3 PSU subrack 1 HU, front).
· Above the PSU subrack 1 HU, either install the strip plate [2] if it was part of the
delivery or one of the slotted front plates [4] (in case two of them were delivered).
· For the PDU subrack 1 HU, use two guide rails to mount the PDU [3] 1)
into the
rack.
· Above the PDU install a slotted front plate [4].

IMPORTANT NOTE:
The guide rails are not part of the delivery of PSU nor PDU, and have to be
ordered separately. If a 19” rack (outdoor 42 HU) has been ordered from Andrew
Wireless Systems GmbH, the guide rails are part of the delivery of the 19” rack.

2.2. MOUNTING THE MAINS TERMINAL BLOCK

At the rear side bottom of the Master Unit, fasten the mains terminal block (AC or
DC, depending on the order/delivery) using screws (see also figure 3-1 Connections
at the rear side).

Note: The terminal block is not used when connecting a DC PSU to a DC

distribution system with the Telcoflex cable (see chapter 2.3).

For details on mounting the mains terminal block, please refer to the Assembly
Drawing G3251M150 which is part of the delivery of the AC Kit / DC Kit.

Push the cables of the mains terminal block underneath the PSU subrack 1 HU to the
front side in order to connect them to the individual PSUs (according PSU numbers
are labelled).

PSU numbers to which
the cables must be
connected.

2.3. DC PSU WITH TELCOFLEX CABLE

For sites where the DC PSUs must be connected to the fused DC distribution
system, the DC PSU is also available with a Telcoflex cable, which has a PSU
connector at one end and terminals (or bare wires) at the other end for connecting to
the DC distribution system.

The following cables have to be connected:

· Connect the two ribbon cables [1] and [2] between PSU subrack 1 HU and PDU
(see illustration above).
· Connect the black [3] and red [4] power cables from the PDU to the according
connectors at the PSU subrack 1 HU. Additionally observe the following rules:
1. In case of an AC power supply, also snap the two ferrite cores [5] over the
black cables and move them as close up to the PSU connector as possible.
2. The parts required for the connections have to be mounted in the following
order:

· At the PDU connect the cables from/to the individual subracks (SR 1 to SR 9) as
well as all others required in your system (e.g. MC, Fans, System Bus, etc.)
according to the labelling on the PDU:

For more detailed information on the general system setup, connectors, etc., please
refer to the User’s Manual of the ION-M Optical Master Unit.

2.5. CONFIGURING FAN ALARM SUPERVISION (7 CHANNEL DIP SWITCH)

The PDU supports 7 fan outputs that provide both power and an individual alarm
interface for each connected fan. If a particular fan output is left unconnected, this will
default to an active fan-alarm condition for that output. To suppress any undesired
fan alarms (e.g. output not in use), the fan alarm supervision function can be
enabled/ disabled individually for any of the 7 fan outputs by properly setting the 7
DIP-switches that are located to the left of the fan output connectors at the PDU’s
rear side.

The left-most DIP-switch (#1) corresponds to the left-most fan output (Fan 1) and so
on. The fan alarm supervision for a particular fan output is enabled by bringing the
corresponding DIP-switch into the lower (“ON”) position. In the upper (“OFF”) DIP-
switch position the fan alarm supervision of the corresponding fan output is disabled.

Please note: The DIP switches only affect the fan-alarm supervision and indication.
The fan-power output and its electronic overload protection functions will always be
operative for all 7 fan outputs, regardless of the position of the DIP switches.

2.6. SYSTEM BUS CONFIGURATION (5-CHANNEL DIP SWITCH)

The PDU’s system bus actively supports both an RS485/4-wire interface and an IM-
Bus interface. The RS485/4-wire interface can be enabled/ disabled by properly
setting the 5 DIP-switches that are located to the left of the system-bus connectors at
the PDU’s rear side.

All 5 DIP switches must be either in the upper (“OFF”) or lower (“ON”) position.
In the upper (“OFF”) DIP-switch position the RS485/4-wire interface is disabled.
In the lower (“ON”) DIP-switch position the RS485/4-wire interface is enabled.

The IM-Bus interface is always enabled.

figure 2-7 System-bus switch, 5-channel DIP switch

2.7. SYSTEM-BUS ADDRESS (16-POSITION ROTARY SWITCH) –

CONFIGURATION

The PDU’s system bus address (“0”…”15”) is set by a 16

position rotary switch at the PDU front panel. This is
normally a one-time configuration setting. The selected
address is used for both the RS485/4-wire interface and
the IM-Bus interface. Any change in the address setting
during live operation will become valid immediately,
resetting or power cycling the PDU is not required for
that purpose.
Up to 16 PDUs may be installed in a system. Each PDU
must have an unique system bus address assigned – it
is not possible to have 2 or more PDUs in a system
bearing the same system bus address.
Please pay close attention to the direction of the
engraved arrow in this address switch! It is marked in
the picture to the left-hand side.
