PEDOC Training Method

The PEDOC method summary: The training method used at Swagelok and ATFAB can be modified to fit
Fischer Special Tooling’s requirements. The PEDOC method involves 5 steps that guide the trainer and the
trainee throughout the training process. The steps are outlined below.

1. PREPARE – (Supervisor) Prepare the training session


a. The supervisor meets with the trainer and the trainee
b. The scope of the training program is clearly outlined to all involved
c. Agreement is expressed by trainer and trainee to engage in the training program

2. EXPLAIN – (Trainer) Clearly describe the training session’s goal/objectives


a. The trainer explains what will be covered in THIS training session
b. Training outline and materials (manuals etc) are provided to the trainee
c. The training steps are briefly reviewed
d. The reasons for the sequence of training steps are explained

3. DEMONSTRATE – (Trainer) Walk through the process that the trainee will be learning
a. Using the outline and checklist, the trainer performs the process to be learned
b. The trainer emphasizes his thinking during each step
c. The trainee asks questions and takes notes as necessary
d. The trainer considers if the trainee is absorbing the information
e. The trainee indicates when he is ready to perform the process

4. OBSERVE – (Trainer) Watches the trainee perform the process step-by-step


a. Using the outline, the trainee performs the process demonstrated
b. The trainer takes the initiative to halt the process if needed:
i. Safety concerns
ii. Incorrect steps
iii. Trainee seems to be unsure of the process
c. The trainee asks for further instructions as needed
d. The trainee completes all of the steps in the process

5. CRITIQUE – (Trainer) Reviews the trainee’s performance


a. Start with (and emphasize) any positive comments
b. Clearly identify where improvements are possible (OFI)
c. Further identify where improvements MUST be made (mandatory)
d. Ask the trainee if he understands any errors that were made:
i. What was wrong with trainee’s actions
ii. Was the DEMONSTRATE step clear
iii. Why the correct actions are preferred
e. Trainer and trainee agree on next step:
i. Training was completely successful
ii. Training needs to be repeated
f. Trainer documents the training session on the checklist
