„ Welding and straightening work on supporting or

wheel carrying components of suspension is not
permitted.

„ Always replace self-locking nuts.

Removing

- Remove drivers side airbag unit

- Disconnect spiral spring connector - 1,

- Turn steering wheel to center position

(wheels in straight ahead position)

- Remove bolt - 3 - and pull steering

wheel off steering column.

Installing

- Place steering wheel on steering

column.

- Center markings for steering wheel and

steering column - arrows - must align.

- Insert connector terminal for steering

angle sensor G85 into designated
openings in steering wheel base.

- Connect connector - 1 - to connector

terminal - 2 - of steering angle sensor
G85 .

- Secure steering wheel with bolt - 3 - ,

tightening torques 48-3, Steering,
torque specifications .

- Mark bolt with punch indentation.

Bolt can be used five times.

Removing

The steering column is delivered only as a complete

replacement part. Servicing is not possible.

Steering lock housing can be modified

Caution!

Before starting work on electrical equipment and

removing steering wheel, the following conditions
must be fulfilled:

„ Disconnect battery Ground (GND) strap

„ Wheels must be located in straight ahead

position.

If these notes are not observed, the airbag system may

not function properly during vehicle operation!

- Set wheels to straight ahead position.

- Pull lever downward below steering column.

- Swing steering column downward as far as possible and

remove.

- Push lever below steering column upward again.

- Remove airbag in steering wheel

- Remove footwell vents from below steering column

- Disconnect connector - 1 - .

- Remove cable channel - 1 - from below steering column.

To do so, gently lift tabs - arrow - on both sides and pull
cable channel out of guide on steering column.

- Remove nuts - arrows - and remove footwell trim - 1 -

.

- Remove bolt - 1 - and pull universal joint - 2 - off

steering gear.

- Remove Ground (GND) cable - arrow - and cable - 1 -

from steering column.

- Remove bolts - 2 - .

- Slightly lower steering column and remove carefully

upward.

Installing

- Hook steering column into assembly aid on mounting

bracket.

- Align steering column to mounting bracket and position.

When doing this, pins - arrows A - of mounting bracket

and holes - arrows B - of steering column must be
positioned toward each other and inserted into one
another.

Only in this way the correct installation position of

steering column to mounting bracket is ensured.

- Tighten bolts - 2 - of steering column.

- Install Ground (GND) cable - arrow - and cable - 1 - on

to steering column.

- Attach universal joint - 2 - onto pinion gear of steering

gear and tighten bolt - 1 - .

- Install foot well trim - 1 - and secure with nuts - arrows -

.

- Install cable channel - 1 - below steering column.

Tabs - arrow - must engage into guide on both sides.

- Connect connector - 1 - .

- Install footwell vents below steering column

VAS 5051B .

Basic setting of steering angle sensor G85 must be

checked after the following work:

„ If steering angle sensor G85 was removed or

replaced,

„ After removing or replacing steering column;

„ After removing or replacing steering lock housing

with steering column switches;

„ After removing or replacing steering gear;

„ If steering wheel was offset.

Steering column, handling and transporting

Warning!

„ The correct handling or the steering column

must always be observed.

„ Incorrect handling of the steering column may

lead to damages of the steering column and thus
to safety risks.

Correct handling and transporting of steering column

„ Transport steering column using two hands.

„ Grasp steering column at upper steering column

tube and in area of upper universal joint.

Incorrect handling of steering column

Transporting steering column by the following components

may lead to damages:

„ Clamping lever
„ Weight compensation springs
„ Deformation element

Incorrect handling of the steering column with safety

risks

The following methods of handling lead to damage of

universal joint bushings of lower steering column bushing
of steering column:

„ Transporting steering column with one hand on joint

shaft.

„ Bending joints above 90 .

Steering column, checking for damage

Visual check

- Check whether parts of steering column indicate

damage.

Functional check

- Check whether steering column can be turned without

catching or difficulty of movement.

- Check that steering column can be adjusted for height

and reach.

- Remove steering column.

- Slide connector - 1 - in direction of - arrow - and

remove from mount in mounting bracket.

- Remove bolt - arrow A - .

- Remove bolts - arrows B - from console to body.

Note:

„ Bolts - arrows B - are installed from direction of

crossmember.

- Remove bolts - 1 - and - 2 - and remove mounting

bracket from body.

Installing

- Install mounting bracket and install bolts - 1 - and - 2 - .

- Install bolts - arrows B - .

Note:

„ Bolts - arrows B - are installed from direction of

crossmember.

- Install bolt - arrow A - .

- Install connector - 1 - to mount in mounting bracket and

slide in opposite of direction of - arrow - until stop.

- Install mounting bolt - 2 - and tighten.

- Tighten bolts - 1 - for strut - 3 - .

- Install steering column.
