2 Product description

2.1 Device description

The high-precision ohm meters of the PROMET product range use state-of-the-art power
electronics to generate a freely adjustable test current of up to 600 A which is fully independent
of the supply voltage. The resistance is determined by measuring the voltage drop using four-
wire measuring technology. Both the test current and the voltage drop are measured via high-
accuracy measurement inputs. Because PROMET ohm meters can output currents for an
unlimited period of time, they can also be used as current sources.
PROMET ohm meters are operated and controlled using just four function keys and a jog dial.
Measurements can also be controlled with an optional remote control unit. The freely adjustable
current is switched on and off via automatic ramps. This prevents the occurrence of transient
signals which could cause indirect releases to trip falsely, for example. The resistance value
determined by the PROMET ohm meter is displayed on the LCD screen and can be saved with a
time and date stamp in the internal memory.
PROMET ohm meters are ideal for high-precision resistance measurements in the µΩ range.
Typical applications include measuring the contact resistance of circuit breakers or disconnectors,
testing bus bars and checking welded joints and earth connections.
PROMET ohm meters feature an interface for connection to the breaker test systems of the
ACTAS product range especially for measuring contact resistance. Using the ACTAS test software
it is then easy to integrate static resistance measurement in automated switchgear tests.
Resistance values determined in this way can also be included as results in test reports.
Once the test current has been set, an optional remote control unit with integrated measurement
inputs can be used to control of up to 250 measurements. Visual and acoustic signals indicate
the status of the measurement currently in progress.

600 PRODUCT DESCRIPTION 9

2.2 Intended use

PROMET has been designed for portable use. It complies with IP 20 and is therefore protected
against finger contact with live or moving parts but has no protection against water. For this
reason it should only be used in dry conditions. Damp and wet can damage the measuring
instrument and cause dangerous short circuits.
The operating voltage must lie within the supply voltage range detailed on the rating plate. The
signals connected to the measurement inputs should not exceed the maximum measuring range.
An overcurrent protective device should be used to protect the supply voltage.

3 Commissioning

3.1 Setting up the measuring instrument

When the measuring instrument is brought from a cold environment into a warm one,
condensation can result in a dangerous situation. For this reason, it is important that earthing
instructions are followed exactly.
The measuring system is protected against overheating by internal fans. An air grille on the
bottom panel and two fans on the back panel provide ventilation. The air grilles are fitted with a
dust filter from the inside to prevent the ingress of coarse particles of dust or dirt.
Before commissioning the device, it is important to ensure that this filter is clean. If not, the
device should not be put into operation. Please contact the manufacturer or a KoCoS service
partner in this case.

CAUTION
The device should only be operated when set up in such a way that air can circulate freely.
The air outlet openings on the side panel should never be obstructed in any way.

3.2 Connecting the protective

protective earth conductor

Before connecting any leads to the test instrument, we recommend that the device be connected
to a protective earth using the green/yellow earth conductor. The earth connection should never
be interrupted by an extension cord without an earth conductor

WARNING
Any interruption of the earth connection, either inside or outside the test instrument, can
cause the test instrument to become a source of danger. Deliberate interruption is strictly
forbidden!

3.3 Connecting a measurement object

object

Measurement objects should only be connected to or disconnected from the measuring

instrument when it is absolutely certain that no test quantities are currently being output.
Please take into account the information given below when connecting a measurement object:

Connect the measuring leads and the high-current leads to the measurement object. Only
use leads which conform to the relevant safety regulations.
Only use leads which can be firmly fixed to the measurement object using clamps, plug-in
contacts or cable lugs.
 Remove all superfluous leads.
The measuring leads and high-current leads used should be as short as possible. When
connecting leads to the current outputs in particular, it is important to check the correct
dimensioning of the conductor cross-sections.
PROMET 100/
100/ 200 / 600 COMMISSIONING 11

CAUTION
For reasons of safety, only those cables should be used which are provided with the device
and have connectors which are safe to touch. The leads must be fully insulated. PROMET
devices output constant test currents of up to 600 A during measurements.

3.3.1 Switchgear device

Please take into account the information given below when connecting a high-or medium-voltage
switchgear device:
The main circuit of the switchgear device must be de-energized and disconnected from the
bus bar. In addition, the breaker poles must be closed and safety earths must be inserted on
both sides of the switchgear device. It is not necessary to remove the earth on one side for
the test as would be the case for a switchgear test.
During connection the drive unit should be put out of operation by interrupting the power
supply, for example. In addition, all drive energy should be discharged in the case of drives
with an energy storage mechanism (spring, hydraulic or pneumatic).

Figure 1: Connection diagram for connecting up a switchgear device for measurements with the 4-wire
method

Tip
 - Please note that the measuring leads must be connected in between the connection points
of the high-current leads, otherwise measurements would be incorrect!

- Please note that for resistance measurements on high- or medium-voltage breakers the
main contacts must be closed.
If an ACTAS test instrument is connected to the switchgear device, the ACTAS software can
be used to switch it to the required position.

MEASURING SYSTEM PROMET 100/ 200 / 600
600

3.4 Operating the measuring system

3.4.1 Switching on

When commissioning the PROMET measuring instrument, the following steps should be carried
out:

Make sure that the main POWER switch is in the OFF position ("0").
First connect the green/yellow earth conductor to a protective earth.
Then connect the PROMET device to the mains voltage. To do so, use the power cable
provided. First plug the inlet connector for non-heating appliances into the measuring system
and then plug the other end of the cable into the mains socket outlet.
Switch the measuring system on using the main POWER switch.
The system then "starts up". Various internal initialisation routines are run through first.
After a few seconds, initialisation is complete and the system is ready for operation.

Chapter 5 describes how to operate the measuring instrument.

In order to achieve the very highest possible degree of accuracy, it is advisable to observe a
warm-up period of approximately 15 minutes before carrying out the first test. The warm-up
phase lasts longer if the device has been subjected to extreme temperature fluctuations (e.g.
after being transported in a car).

The measuring system can either be operated manually as a stand-alone system or automatically
in combination with the breaker test systems of the ACTAS series. In automatic mode, operation
and evaluation are carried out with the ACTAS software.

3.4.2 Operating modes:

Various operating modes are available:

Mode Method

4W 4-wire measurement

BUS BAR Automated voltage drop measurement mode

SOURCE DC current source

REMOTE UNIT Control by remote control unit

REMOTE ACTAS Control by ACTAS software in master-slave mode

PROMET 100/ 200 / 600
600 COMMISSIONING 13

3.4.3 Operation in conjunction with ACTAS test systems

When commissioning the PROMET measuring system in combination with an ACTAS test
instrument, the following steps should be carried out one after another in the order indicated
below:
Make sure that the main POWER switch of the test instrument and the main POWER switch
of the PROMET measuring system are in the OFF position ("0").
Connect the PROMET measuring system to the ACTAS test instrument using the
communication cable which is available as an optional extra. To minimise the risk of picking
up unwanted electrical signals, never use a cable which is longer than the one provided by
KoCoS. Make sure that the connection cable is not situated in close proximity to leads
carrying signals with a high interference potential (high currents, voltages and/or
frequencies).
Connect the ACTAS test instrument to the operating PC via the serial interface or USB. Only
use data cables which have been approved by the manufacturer. Here too, there is a risk of
picking up unwanted electrical signals (see above).

Figure 2: Measurement setup for operation with an ACTAS test instrument

Connect the ACTAS test instrument to the supply voltage (auxiliary d.c. voltage or a.c.
voltage from the station battery or mains voltage). To do so, use the power cable with
earthing contact which is provided with the device. First insert it into the inlet socket of the
test instrument and then connect the cable to the power supply.
Connect the measurement object to the PROMET measuring system as described in section
3.3.
Use the main POWER switches of the ACTAS test instrument and the PROMET measuring
system to switch both devices on.
Both systems then "start up". Various internal initialisation routines are run through first.
After approximately 20 seconds, initialisation is complete and the systems are ready for
operation.
Select the test step REMOTE -ACTAS-Control in the main menu to put the PROMET system
on stand-by.
Start the ACTAS software which then independently establishes a connection with the ACTAS
test instrument via the serial interface.
The parameters which have to be set in the software are described in detail below.
PROMET 100/ 200 / 600
600 COMMISSIONING 14

Setting parameters in the ACTAS software

Setting measuring ranges:

It is important that the same values for the measuring ranges are entered in the ACTAS software
as have been set manually in the PROMET device, because the 0-10 V outputs correspond to 0-6
V or 0-600 A.

Note should be taken of the following when operating PROMET with the ACTAS software:
When using ACTAS P6, P 14II or P 22, enter the following values for the ±10V channels:
Current measurement: Min/max next higher current measuring range (see chapter
7 for details of the current measuring ranges of the various
different models)
Voltage drop measurement: Min/max the values which have been set manually in the
PROMET device must be entered here as well.

When using ACTAS PBAs, P4, P8, P16 enter the following values for the 0-10 V channels:
Current measurement: = Min = 0 A Max = next higher current measuring
range (see chapter 7 for details of the current measuring
ranges of the various different models)
Voltage drop measurement: Min = 0 mV Max = the value which has been set
manually in the PROMET device must be entered here as
well.

Test job configuration:

Figure 3 Configuration of the release duration of the current source.

In the software, the release duration of the current source is configured as shown in Figure 3.
The length of the recording period (Scanning tab) must be adjusted in accordance with the
length of the release signal.

TIP
- It is important to note that the current source is not terminated if the release signal

(green bar) does not have a falling edge at the end!

- When the ACTAS software is used to control the PROMET device, the full test current is
available as soon as the source is released,
i.e. no ramps are used!

The signals for the voltage drop and the test current must now be added to the appropriate test
step for recording, as shown in Figure 4.

Displays and controls

PROMET is switched on and off at the power switch. The switch lights up in the ON position. The
display consists of an alphanumeric LCD screen with 4 x 20 characters which is used to navigate
through the menus and display measured values.

CAUTION
The LCD screen should not be exposed to direct and intensive sunlight as the maximum
permissible operating temperature (50°C) might then be exceeded, making it either
impossible or extremely difficult to read the information displayed.

Like the acoustic signal, the LED serves to indicate the current status. The use of these signals is
explained in more detail for each mode in chapter 5.
The function keys described in detail in chapter 5.1 and the jog dial located beneath the LCD
screen are used to navigate through the menus and operate the device.

4.1.2 USB and serial interface

The serial RS-232 connection of the test system is linked to the serial connection of the operating
PC via a 1:1 cable (PROMET: DB-9-connector; PC: DB-9-socket). Do not use a null modem cable
with reversed transmitter/receiver lines!

The connection can also be made via a USB interface. The USB interface, which can be built into
the measuring system as an optional extra, is passive, i.e. this interface is only used for
communication with a PC or laptop (USB master). It is not possible to connect another passive
USB device (such as a memory stick) to this interface.
The USB driver for automatic installation can be found on the setup CD in the following directory:
[CD-ROM Drive]:\Driver\USB

CAUTION
To avoid communication problems, only one of the two available serial interfaces (RS-232 or
USB) should be connected to the measuring system at any one time.

4.1.3 Mains and earth connection

The protective earth should always be connected first. Use the green/yellow cable for
this purpose. It is recommended that the PROMET device never be connected to an
external voltage without a protective earth.

The measuring instrument is supplied with power via the mains connection socket using the
cable for non-heating appliances provided.

CAUTION
Check the mains voltage and frequency before powering the device. The device may only be
operated within the mains voltage range detailed on the rating plate. Operating the device
with an incorrect mains voltage may damage it and leads to loss of the guarantee.

WARNING
The power cable provided has one earth continuity conductor. If the connection is made
correctly, the housing of the device is connected with the earth continuity conductor of the
two-pole-and-earth socket-outlet via the earth continuity conductor of the power cable.
Incorrect connection (for example, the use of non-earthed socket-outlets) can lead to death
or injury from electric shock!

4.1.4 Test current outputs

Depending on the operating mode, the test current outputs can provide constant test
currents of up to 600 A for unlimited periods. The measuring range for the test current
is automatically adjusted.
The duration of current output is limited automatically in both 4W and REMOTE mode.
However, in BUS BAR and CURRENT SOURCE mode, test current output must be
stopped manually.
In ACTAS Control mode, the output duration depends on the parameters set for the
current source release (DMO/PROMET Enable) in the ACTAS software.

WARNING
It is imperative that any applicable safety regulations on the use of high currents be
observed!

4.1.5 Voltage measurement inputs

The UIN voltage measurement inputs are used to measure the voltage drop across the
test object. Internally the inputs have a number of different measuring ranges and
automatically switch between these ranges depending on the measurement value.
Alternatively, the measuring range can be set permanently in the menu (under
Settings).

4.1.6 Remote control socket (Remote)

The Remote socket is used to connect the PROMET measuring instrument to an
optional remote control unit. Using the remote control with integrated status LED, up
to 250 measurements can be carried out at a maximum distance of 5 m. The remote
control unit is equipped with a button, a status LED and two connections for measuring
the voltage drop. More detailed information on how to use the remote control unit is
given in chapter 5.3.

4.1.7 ACTAS control socket (Ext. Control)

The ACTAS control socket (Ext. control) is used to connect the PROMET measuring instrument to
the test instruments of the ACTAS range. To do so, use only the data cable provided.

5.3 Operating modes

There are four different operating modes which are described in detail below. An ACTAS test
instrument or a remote control unit is required for the Remote mode. The high-current
connection clamps must be connected properly before measurements are started in the 4W-
Mode or Bus Bar mode. Measurements cannot be started if the connection clamps are not
properly connected. The following message then appears:

Please connect the

high-current
connection clamps
OK

Before starting a test, it is sensible to save the user name and the identification number of
the test object in the appropriate menu (see chap. 5.5.1). All tests are saved with a time and
date stamp, the name of the user and the identification number of the test object.

5.3.2 4W Mode

The 4-wire method (Kelvin method) is used for measurements in the 4W mode. When this
method is used, the voltage drop across the measurement object is measured directly using a
separate measurement circuit. As extremely low resistances (<1 mΩ) can be determined very
accurately with this method, the 4W mode is also suitable for measurements on medium and
high-voltage switchgear equipment and high-current connections. The contact resistance is
usually very low for measurements of this type and does not normally
4W Mode exceed a few µΩ.
Current XXX A
The first step in this menu is to select the test current. Use the jog dial
ESC < > RUN to select the value and choose RUN (F4) to set the value and start the
measurement.

TIP
The speed with which the jog dial is turned influences the increments in which the current
value increases/decreases. The faster the jog dial is turned, the larger the increments.

Once a measurement has ended, the values currently recorded for the test current, the voltage
I=150.5A Mode 4W drop and the calculated resistance value are displayed. Press SAVE (F4)
U=02.50V No.007 to save these measurement results.
R= 12µΩ
ESC SAVE
When the limit value mode (Limit-Mode) is activated in the Settings
menu, the results screen displays a status indicator instead of the current operating mode. This
indicator shows whether or not a measured value is within the set limit.

5.3.3 Bus Bar

The Bus Bar mode is used to test bus bars or to carry out section-by-section measurements on
test objects in general.
Once a test current has been set, a measurement can be started by
I=XXX.XA Mode 4W
U=XX.XmV pressing RUN. The current source is activated and the current ramps up
to the value which has been entered. PROMET then waits until the
ESC Contact? measurement is triggered by connection of the measurement clamps.
As soon as PROMET detects that the the measurement clamps have been connected, the
measurement starts and the results (current, voltage and resistance) are displayed and saved
automatically. The STOP button can be used to stop bus bar
I=200.00A Mode 4W measurements.
U=50.0mV No.007
R=250µΩ
An LED and synchronous acoustic signal are used for status indication
during the measurement process. For more detailed information, see
chapter 5.3.3.

TIP
If a measurement does not start automatically when PROMET is connected up to the test
object, the voltage drop across the contact is too low and a higher test current is required.

5.3.4 Remote Mode

Remote Control

The Remote Control menu is used for measurements controlled by an optional remote control
unit. Once the test current has been set and confirmed with OK, PROMET waits for a triggering
command from the remote control unit. Choose STOP to cancel the
Remote Control measurement.
I=200A
State: waiting... To ramp up the test current and start a measurement, keep the button
STOP
of the remote control unit pressed continuously. Once the measured
values have been determined, the results of the measurement are
displayed and automatically saved. Stop pressing the button of the remote control unit during
the course of a measurement to cancel the measurement which is currently in progress. Or press
the button of the remote control unit continuously again after a successful measurement to start
a new measurement. LEDs on the remote control unit and on the PROMET device itself,
accompanied by synchronous acoustic signals, indicate the current status of a measurement.
Status indication is dealt with in detail in chapter 5.3.5.

ACTAS Control

For external control with one of the test instruments of the ACTAS range, the PROMET device
must be in ACTAS control mode.
Press the OK key to accept the selected test current and to put PROMET on stand-by for external
control with an ACTAS test instrument.

can consist of up to 16 characters and can be included in the report.

5.5.2 Limit values

Limit values for the resistance can be set under Limit values. If the measured resistance value
rises above or falls below the limit value, one of the following messages
I=XXX.XA LIMIT:Rmin
U=XX.XXmV is displayed on the LCD screen: LIMIT:Rmin or LIMIT:Rmax. In
R=XXXΩ addition to this message, the LED gives three short flashes and
ESC SAVE PROMET emits three short acoustic signals at the same time.

5.5.3 Output duration

The Output duration menu contains the Ramp duration and Burn
Start ramp duration duration functions. Under Ramp duration, the user can set the period
t = 0 sec of time during which the current is to be ramped up (Start ramp
Esc < > SAVE duration) and the period of time during which the current is to be
ramped down after a measurement (Stop ramp duration).
Under Burn duration, the user can set the time which is to elapse between the end of the ramp
and the start of the measurement. This period of time can be used to burn the contacts clean, for
example.
A value between 0 and 10 seconds can be selected for all 3 parameters.
