MATERIAL: ASTM A36 Structural Steel

SCOPE:

Carbon steel shapes, plates, and bars of structural quality for use in riveted, bolted, or welded
structures as general load carrying members. Supplemental requirements are provided for
improved notch toughness.

SUPPLEMENTARY REQUIREMENTS: (In addition to requirements of ASTM A36)

(Plates only):

Over 1.5” thick: Killed Fine-Grain (Supplementary Requirement – S91)

PURCHASE REQUIREMENTS:

Complete dimensions must follow the material description of each commodity.

PLATE ASTM A36 (Through 1.5” Thick)

PLATE ASTM A36 KILLED FINE-GRAIN (Over 1.5” Thick)
ANGLE ASTM A36
TEE SPLIT SECTION - ASTM A36
BEAM WIDE FLANGE - ASTM A992
BEAM AMER. STD. - ASTM A992
CHANNEL AMER. STD. - ASTM A36
CHANNEL CAR-SHIP - ASTM A36
BARS ASTM A36 S.E. H.R. FLATS S.Q.

Both mill and warehouse purchases require test certificates.

All purchase subject to verification tests.

Note: This standard supersedes SD 3111 and SD 3110 (for steel bars, shapes and plates).
When either SD 3111 or SD 3110 are specified for bars, shapes or plates, SD 3116
should be used.

APPROVED ALTERNATES:

Shapes – SD 3155 Plates & Bars – A003318

The following materials are approved alternates for plates and bars which do not require forming. If
forming is required a Non-Conformance report must be submitted to engineering for review and approval:
SD 3155, SD 3156, SD 3157, 547506, 517516, A002290, A003306, A003309, A003319.
