Overview of the lesson:

“Today we will learn about letters. Who can tell me words that start with s,t,n?” Mariam called on a
few students to tell her some words that begin with those letters. She used a powerpoint slide that
had pictures and words on it: sun, table, six,….During this she asked them what the sound of the first
letter was. “What is the sound for the first letter?” Students called out their answers. She asked
students to raise their hand to answer (try using name sticks so each student gets a chance to
answer).

“Group 1 and 2 stand up and sit in your chairs. Group 3 and 4 go sit and your chair. Group 6 and five
go sit in your chair.”
Once students got into their groups, Mariam explained what students would do at each center.

Group 1 and 2: Match the picture to the word. “You should to match the word with the picture.”
Group 3 and 4: You have letters in your table. You should to put the first letter under the right
letter.”
Group 5 and 6: “You have spoon and fishes. You should to put the fish with the first letter into the
fish bowl.” The directions were a little unclear here. The MST explained it to the group after you
walked away.

Mariam asked students to clan up and they began to put their centers away. “Who is the quietest
group?” Mariam then gave points to the groups that were paying attention and quiet.
Mariam projected a powerpoint with words that the s,t,n sounds. “Now I will choose any student
randomly and you should to answer me. What’s the first letter for this picture?” Students put their
hands up and then she chose students to select the correct starting letter. She asked students to put
up a 1 or 2 if the student answered correctly.

When students were supposed to put their fingers up to show right or wrong, many students were
not participating and were playing with one another.

Mariam held up cards and asked students to say the names.

“Who can tell me words that begin with s? She called on a student and the student responded.”
