Activity The objective of this lesson is to place an emphasis on the

concept of sorting. First, the teacher will provide his or her
students with the proper definition/objective of sorting. Then, as
a class, they will complete several models for further
understanding through the chosen SMART notebook lesson. The
class models include a chart, vortex, and a venn diagram. After
exposing students to the various forms of graphic organizers,
select students (volunteers) will then be invited to come up to the
board to complete the first chart graphic organizer on fruits vs.
vegetables. Students will drag the fruits and the vegetables to
their proper location. After the chart has been completed as a
class, the teacher or chosen individual will then hit the “check”
button to reveal the correct answers. Afterwards, the teacher will
instruct the students to complete the next chart graphic
organizer independently at each of their table groups, and share
their answers with the entire class when completed. This process
will repeat for both the vortex and venn diagram graphic
organizers.

This activity will allow students to sort and classify objects by

certain, identifiable attributes. The lesson will also show students
a visual display of results in various forms of graphic organizers.
