Introduction

Re-presenting Place is an elective module, which aims to examine and explore the urban
landscape through the act of research and exhibition. It emphasizes on the processes of
experiencing, capturing, interpreting and re-presenting interesting places within the built
environment into three dimensional works

Proposed Site(s) for research study are within the city of Kuala Lumpur.

Objectives of Project

The objectives of this assignment are as follows:


1. To introduce the urban-related issues of the city in relation to architecture and the built
environment.
2. To introduce research and exhibition as a strategies for learning architecture and urbanity.
3. To develop self-directed and analytical skills in planning, conducting and presenting
architecture.

Learning Outcomes of this Project

1. Write a short narrative/research essay.


2. Document the urban and cultural facets of the city in relation to architecture and the built
environment.
3. Analyze and interpret the urban and cultural facets of the city in relation to architecture
and the built environment.

Tasks /Guidelines

For Project 1, group of (3-4 members) are required to accomplish exercises as part of Project 1.

Exercise a: Research Essay (Week 2)


Write a 200-300 word essay on the selected topic, to best describe the place assigned to you and
analyse its quality based on topic/theme assigned.

Topic/theme. (You may select and develop from the list below).
Urban veranda: interaction between streets, pedestrian walkways and the
Shop-fronts (veranda as a place for people to mingle and rest).
Urban streetscape: back lanes, signage, pedestrian network, courtyards, and
Permeable/impermeable surroundings.
Ripples of life: Religious/Spiritual, political, cultural aspects of the city and
rural areas identity.
Hybrid morphology: transition or overlapping between old and new architecture, culture
and new interventions.
Architectural and urban language: facade, style, massing, scale, color, texture, materials,
ornamentation, nodes, grids, courtyards, etc.
Constructed landscapes: How architecture becomes a vehicle in creating and evolving
relationship with the users of the environment.

Exercise b: photos, sketches and notes (Week 4)


This assignment will be undertaken during the site visit. Project involves documentation process
by which students are required to collect and collate as much data as possible. Documentation
will be in the form of sketches and photos. At least (30) images sketch and photo, capturing the
scene and elements which relates to the topic chosen.

15-minute Video Presentation

a. Background of the place
b. Analysis of the place.

Analysis may use the following tools and method:
1. Use of key urban design and architectural terminology in analysis.
2. Element of the City (Kevin Lynch’s)
3. Responsive Environments
4. Figure ground theory and analysis
5. Linkage Analysis
6. Mind Mapping / Parti-Diagram
7. Historical and cultural background of the place.

Booklet:
The Booklet should have a well-organized documentation of the place and the topic.
It will be comprise of (4) parts:
a. Background (building or place)
b. Essay (align to selected topic)
c. Capturing and experiencing the place. (photos and sketches)
d. Conclusion
