B. COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the course, students will be able to :


(a) comprehend written and oral general english texts as well as answer text-based
questions of different levels of difficulty;
(b) practise language skills;
(c) conduct indepth discussions on contemporary issues;
(d) identify main and supporting ideas in texts;
(e) evaluate opinions critically and provide oral and written responses;
(f) write essays and reports;
(g) write job application letters, resumés and prepare for job interviews;
(h) apply language skills in analysing issues pertaining to sustainability;
(i) acquire soft skills so as to function effectively in social and occupational spheres.

E. COURSE EVALUATION

COURSE WORK (50 %)

Individual Oral Presentation

(i) Each student will be given 10 minutes.


(Presentation : 5 - 7 minutes & Q & A : 3 - 5 minutes)
(ii) Topics will be vetted by the teacher.
(iii) Students must submit an outline of the presentation to the

teacher before they deliver their presentation.
(iv) Presentations will be assessed based on fluency and coherence,
lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy and pronunciation.
(v) Students will be penalized for reading.

Writing Test

(i) Students are to write an essay of 350 - 400 words in one (1) hour.
(ii) Teachers are to write the essay writing test question on the board.
Students are to prepare their own writing paper. 15% Week 10
(iii) Essays will be assessed based on coherence and cohesion, lexical
resource, grammatical range and accuracy.
(iv) Essays exceeding 450 words will be penalized.

Job Interview

(i) Teachers will fix an appointment for the interview which will be held
outside class time. 10% Week 8 & 10
(ii) Students are to submit their resume and job application letter before
the interview.
(iii) Duration of interview: 10 – 15 minutes

Listening Test

(i) Students listen to a recording and answer questions based on it.


(ii) Teachers are to ensure that mobile phones are switched off and

no recording is allowed during the test.
(iii) Duration: 30-40 minutes

Notes:
Continuous assessments provide both students and teachers more opportunities to evaluate the
strengths and weaknesses of the students in the four different skills.
