ION-B Distributed Antenna System Training

ION-B Basics

• ION-B is an optical DAS capable of

transporting frequencies from 700
to 2700 MHz
• Single Mode Fiber optics enable:
– Wide bandwidth
– Linearity and transparency
– Best quality of any modulation format
– Long distance
– Minimum design and installation costs
– Flexibility for future evolution

• Modular approach enables scalable

investments

ION-B Main Components

• The modular master unit is located

with the BTS and connected via RF
interface. It can host various cards
including points of interface, RF to
optical converters, and passive
components

• RF signals are transported to the

remote unit over single mode fiber
at 1310nm. The mixed copper-fiber
cable can provide remote DC power
to the remote units over the copper

• The remote unit, which can be up to

3km away, has an optical to RF
converter, amplifier lineup,
duplexer, and one or two antenna
ports to be connected to the passive
coaxial cable network

Master Unit Installation Guidelines

• Design the system to meet the subrack power

requirement:
–75 watts for AC versions (TPRN14, TPRN24)
–100 watts for DC version (TPRN34)
• Use passive subrack (TPRN04) if it is needed to house
only passive equipment in order to optimize the system
cost
• Don’t house more than 8 TFLNs in one subrack
• Alternate active and passive cards as much as possible to
allow good air flow inside the subrack
• Leave 1HE free above and below subracks

System Startup: Checks

Before turning up the system make sure that:

• Master unit has been configured and modules connected with RF jumpers
according to the design

• All TFLN fibers have been connected to the Remote Units

• All Remote power supplies haver been connected

• Each Remote Unit has been connected to the coverage antennas

• TSUN4 (if present) has been housed in the master unit TPRN subrack

• A unique address has been set for each TPRN subrack in the system
through the dip-switches on the backplane and subracks have been daisy
chained via RS485 bus CAT5 cables

System Startup

1. Switch on the Remote units

Initially both LEDs turns on. Red LED will switch off as soon as the TFLN is
turned on (DL optical power OK and no alarms) and only the green LED
remains on indicating proper power supply voltage
2. Switch on the Master unit
The TFLN initiates the discovery phase signalled by general alarm LED
blinking to identify and collect status information from the connected
Remote Units (if not check wether the Remote Unit discovery has been
disabled or is disconnected)
During the Discovery Process, RF system functionalities are not affected
3. Verify masking of unused TFLN optical ports (1,2,3,4 LEDs) and
unused TPRN slots via LMT / TSUN4 software in order to avoid
meaningless alarms, done automatically during Discovey Process
4. Check system alarm status via the LMT or TSUN4 software

• OTDR measurements need to be made with 8° connectors APC

• Optical Power measurements need to use APC connectors

TPRN Subrack Troubleshooting

• In case a degradation of the +12 Vdc power supply occurs (below an

in factory set threshold), TPRN is automatically switched to standby
mode to preserve system integrity (avoiding overcurrent issues on the
hosted boards)
• In case TPRN24 is used (redundant power supply) a degradation of
the +12 Vdc power supply results in an automatic switching from main
to spare converter. Only if also the spare power supply is degraded
the TPRN turns to standby mode
• Reboot is needed after the power supply functionalities are restored
• Each TPRN slot can automatically detect the active module presence.
If the module is detected but TPRN cannot communicate with it, an
I2CBus alarm is activated
• Turn off the TPRN subrack when installing and uninstalling modules

TFLN Troubleshooting

If TFLN general alarm red LED (flash symbol ) is on:

• Replace the TFLN unit

If one of the TFLN 1,2,3,4 red LED is on:

• Check that the SC/APC optical connectors/adapters are clean
• Chech Remote Unit red LED. If it is on there is an issue with the
Remote Unit, troubleshoot it
• Check UL optical fiber.
Measure Pin and Pout on the UL fiber and compare with the expected
attenuation to see if any problem should have occured in the UL
optical link.
In case UL optical fiber attenuation is exceeding 4 dB, the system is
not able to compensate for the optical loss and the UL optical fiber
link needs to be repaired

Remote Unit Troubleshooting

If Remote Unit red LED is on:

• Check if any external equipment is connected to the Remote Unit and
it is working properly (see next slide)
• Check that the SC/APC optical connectors/adapters are clean
• Check DL optical fiber.
Measure Pin and Pout on the DL fiber and compare with the expected
attenuation to see if any problem have occured in the DL optical link.
In case DL optical fiber attenuation is exceeding 4 dB, the system is
not able to compensate for the optical loss and the DL optical fiber
link needs to be repaired
• Try swapping DL and UL fibers or Remote units to determine the
cause of the alarm.
