Albemarle sells Chemetall to BASF
for $3.2 bn
BASF has resolved to acquire the Chemetall
metal surface treatment unit from Albemarle
through a $3.2 bn deal. The transaction is
anticipated to conclude by end-2016 and can
help reduce Albemarle's $3.6 bn debt. In 2015,
Chemetall recorded $202 M earnings upon
$845 M sales of products intended for priming
metals for painting and preventing corrosion. Of
Chemetall sales, around 20% are in Asia, 30%
in North America and 50% in Western Europe.
The coatings segment of BASF, which already
records $3.6 bn/y of sales, will be augmented
by 2500 employees, 10 R&D sites and 21
manufacturing locations in 20 countries.
Separately, Albemarle recently divested units in
metal sulfides and mineral flame retardants that
have $300 M/y of total sales. In 2015,
Albemarle tagged its fine chemistry services
unit for divestment, but no progress has been
reported for the deal. The fine chemistry
services unit records $200 M/y of sales.

Asian Paints 1Q 2016-2017 net
profit up 17%
Asian Paints' income from operations totaled
Rup 4082.1 crores for the quarter ended 30
Jun 2016 (1Q 2016-2017), up 10.2% from Rup
3703.0 crores in 1Q 2015-2016. PBDIT also
increased by 20.9% year-on-year to Rup 820.3
crores from Rup 678.6 crores, while net profit
after minority interest grew by 17.9% year-on-
year to Rup 535.0 crores from Rup 453.7
crores. The firm's Indian decorative business
recorded double digit growth in 1Q 2016-2017,
with reduced raw material costs enhancing
margins. Industrial segment performed well in
the Industrial Liquid Paints category for the
firm's AP-PPG joint venture, while the other
joint venture PPG-AP tallied good demand in
the Auto OEM and General Industrial sector.
The company's International business recorded
good results on the back of good growths in

Growth and profitability in India:
Asian Paints
Asian Paints is now Asia's third biggest paint
company following Nippon Paint and Kansai
Paint. The firm recorded an 8.7% growth in its
Indian paints and coatings net sales to Rup
126.3 bn from Rup 116.2 bn on over 28%
increase in profit to Rup 26.3 bn from Rup
20.5 bn. The company's newer kitchen and
bathroom operations rose by 32% to Rup
1070 M from Rup 810 M. These small interests
have currently recorded worsening loss of Rup
302 M from Rup 98 M. Asian Paints' industrial
coatings joint venture, AP-PPG, recorded
decent performances in the powder coatings
and industrial liquid paints segments. The
automotive OEM segment under the firm's
automotive coatings joint venture, PPG-AP,
experienced demand recovery. The
International business unit benefitted on strong
performances in key markets like Bangladesh
and the Middle East.

Growth and profitability in India:
Berger Paints
In FY 2015-2016, Berger Paints' Indian
operations generated Rup 41.3 bn of annual
sales and income, up by 8.6% from Rup 38.0
bn in FY 2014-2015. Profits also increase by a
third to Rup 3.54 bn from Rup 2.66 bn.
Including the firm's other International
operations, Berger Paints recorded Rup 46.3
bn of consolidated sales and income, a 7.2%
growth from Rup 43.2 bn. Consolidated profits
rose drastically by almost 40% to nearly Rup
3.7 bn from Rup 2.6 bn that has helped the
company emerge as India's second largest
company in the paints and coatings market
after Asian Paints.

BASF helps automakers meet US
EPA greenhouse gas regulations
BASF helps automakers decrease CO2
emissions from cars with combustion engines
in order to meet the US Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) greenhouse gas
standards. Several products of BASF assist in
the reduction of CO2 for the automotive
industry, including lubricants, coatings and fuel
additives. The company has created an
integrated paint process at the automotive
manufacturing facility that lessens material
consumption, saves energy costs from 15-
20%, cuts the length of the production line and
decreases CO2 emissions by up to 20%. The
company's energy efficient lubricants help cut
fuel consumption by significantly decreasing
wear and friction in transmissions and axles,
while surpassing the expectations of fill-for-life
durability requirements. Its fuel additives
protect the fuel system, improve engine
cleanliness, and cut the emission of harmful
substances and greenhouse gases.

Tower at PNC Plaza with PPG
Coatings Earns Architectural Award
PPG says that the Tower at PNC Plaza in
Pittsburgh, which features an innovative
double-skin façade fabricated with Coraflon
Sunstorm powder coatings by PPG, has
earned Architect magazine's 2016 R+D Award
for High-Performance Building. The double-
skin façade, one of the first of its kind in North
America, combines with two vertical thermal
shafts and a solar chimney to naturally
ventilate the 33-story skyscraper without
electricity or fan power for 42 percent of the
year. As a result, the Tower at PNC Plaza,
which opened Oct. 1, 2015, is expected to
consume up to 50-percent less temperature-
control-related energy than comparable
buildings of its size.
The inner and outer curtain walls
incorporate metal framing finished with
Coraflon Sunstorm fluoropolymer powder
coating in "mica gray''. Coraflon Sunstorm
powder coatings meet or exceed American
Architectural Manufacturers Association
(AAMA) 2605 specifications, the industry's
most rigorous standard for weathering,
corrosion and chemical resistance, color and
gloss retention, and other criteria. They are
formulated without solvents and emit virtually
no volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Editors
for Architect magazine wrote that jurors for the
2016 R+D Awards were most impressed by
the design and functionality of the double-wall
façade.

Berger Paints will invest Rup 500
crore for expansion
Berger Paints India Ltd, the country's second
biggest paint producer, will spend about Rup
500 crore over the next three years (until FY
2020) on capacity expansion and construction
of new facilities to raise overall industrial and
decorative paints capacity by almost 25% or
by 10,000 tonnes/mo. The firm's capacity

currently stands at around 32,000 tonnes/mo
and 6000 tonnes/mo for decorative and
industrial paints, respectively. In Jan 2016,
Berger will start up its Rup 90-crore greenfield
facility in Tejpur, Assam. The 4000 tonnes/y
plant will serve the decorative paints market.
The firm will also expand its units in Jejuri,
Maharashtra and Hindupur, Andhra Pradesh
by a total of around 6000 tonnes/mo. Further,
the company will construct a Rup 10 crore
mixing facility in Gujarat, as well as a Rup 25
crore emulsion facility in Rishra, West Bengal.
This emulsion facility is in addition to the firm's
existing plant in Gujarat. The Rishra unit will
serve the Assam, Tejpur and the east and
southern markets. The capacity expansion will
boost Berger's market share from 19% to
around 22-23% over three years, as it
competes with top market player Asian Paints

PPG to displays coatings, present
about alternative technologies at
Aerosol and Dispensing Forum
PPG's packaging coatings business exhibited
at the Aerosol and Dispensing Forum on 13-14
Septembr 2016 in New York City. Also during
the event, a PPG expert delivered a
presentation on how changes to regulations
are impacting packaging makers' and brand
owners' requirements for metal packaging
coatings. In addition to highlighting new
generation PPG packaging coatings products
during the show, a PPG expert presented
details about the addition of bisphenol A (BPA)
to the California Proposition 65 list in the US
and how this regulation change is affecting
customers' requirements for packaging
coatings. The expert discussed PPG products
and technologies that can help aluminium
aerosol and tube packaging makers and brand
owners comply with new regulatory
requirements.
PPG new generation technologies also help
customers reduce their environmental impact.
Featured coatings will include products with
higher solids content and reduced volatile
organic compound (VOC) emissions, such as
bisphenol A non-intent (BPA-NI, or with no
BPA intentionally added) internal and external
coatings, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone-free for
monobloc internal liners, and benzophenone-
free ultraviolet-cure (UV-cure) varnishes for
plastic tubes. The HOBA MAX (PPG8900
series) liquid internal liner for monobloc
aerosol cans has a significantly higher solids
content than traditional internal liners, and the
HOBA PURAIR powder internal liner is 100%
solids. During the show, PPG also showcased
its full range of bisphenol-A non-intent external
basecoats and over-varnishes that offer a
complete BPA-NI system for monobloc aerosol
and bottle can packages.

RPM Posts Record First Quarter
The Medina, OH-based company, which owns
subsidiaries that supply specialty coatings,
sealants, building materials and related
services, announced its Q1 earnings.
Continued challenges related to currency
exchange rates and an overall sluggish
economy proved difficult, but the company
reported record sales, net income and
earnings per diluted share for the period.
First quarter net sales increased 0.8 percent
to $1.25 billion, while net income jumped 13
percent to $112.8 million from the same period
a year ago, the company said. Diluted
earnings per share of $0.83 showed a 12.2
percent increase from the fiscal 2016 first
quarter. Consolidated earnings before interest
and taxes (EBIT) improved 4.2 percent to
$167.4 million from the start of the previous
fiscal year.
In its fiscal Q1, RPM saw its industrial
segment's net sales dip 0.2 percent to $675.8
million from the same period last year. Foreign
currency translation negatively impacted the
segment, reducing sales by 2.4 percent, it
said. EBIT for the segment grew 5.9 percent to
$91.1 million from the fiscal 2016 first quarter.
Currency headwinds continued to affect the
company's industrial businesses outside the U.
S., however its Brazilian business reportedly
delivered mid-single-digit growth at actual
exchange rates and high-single-digit growth in
local currencies. Although the company
achieved a lower tax rate in its first quarter
through to the adoption of the new accounting
standard, it estimates the full-year effective tax
rate will remain in the 26 percent range as
previously disclosed.

Greenkote opens anti-corrosion
coatings facility in Shanghai
Greenkote has announced the opening of a
new facility in Shanghai, PRC, which will
provide Greenkote coatings to the Far East
region. The new Greenkote licensee, Shanghai
Premier Tension Control Bolts Co Ltd is a joint
venture comprised of Tension Control Bolts Ltd
(TCB) of the UK, Shanghai High Strength Bolts
Plant Ltd (SHS) and Shanghai Yan Yan
Trading (YYT). SHTCB has installed a full
state-of-the-art Greenkote coating line with a
capacity of 300 tonnes/mo of parts.
The company is now helping China in its
commitment to a cleaner environment by
supplying 2000 tonnes of Greenkote tension
control bolts for the new 1 M kW Jiahuwan
clean energy power plant in Guangdong
Province. The company's Greenkote-coated
preload bolts, both tension control bolts (TCB)
and hex bolts, all meet the most stringent
international standards including C5-M which
addresses very high corrosivity marine
environments. Greenkote is a family of high-
performance zinc-based coatings. It can be
applied to ferrous metals and alloys by a
patented thermal diffusion process for
fasteners and many other applications. It is

designed to replace older processes such as
hot-dip galvanizing, zinc plating, sherardizing
and metal flake coating. It provides better
adhesion, eliminates hydrogen embrittlement
and is eco-friendly. Greenkote processing is
free of acids, chlorides, cyanides, trivalent and
hexavalent chromium, cadmium, heavy metals,
VOCs and other air pollutants. It is fully
compliant with ASTM A1059/A1059 M, an
industry standard specification for zinc alloy
coatings.

Powder coatings used as adhesives
for metal-plastic hybrid materials
Researchers developed catalysts for
polyurethane powder coatings which result in
low temperature cross-linking highly-flexible
powders which are hardened using a two-
stage reactions mechanism. Powder coating
layers are used as a reactive adhesive for the
injection moulding technology staking of metal
plastic hybrids. The process is described which
achieves high adhesion for thermoplastic
polyurethane without supportive constructive
measures on the building materials. The
interdisciplinary Cornet project supported by
AIF tested the adhesive layer, the pre-
treatment of the substrate as well as the
injection moulding process together with 1
German and 2 Belgian research institutes
(Frauenhofer-Institut fuer Werkstoffmaschinen
und Umformtechnik IWU, Centre de
Recherche Metallurgique CRM and Centre
Collectif de LIndustrie Technologique,
SIRRISO) which optimized and further
developed the properties of aluminium alloys.
The results form the foundation for short
process chains with low resource and cost-
and energy efficient production of multi-
material hybrid building materials, which are
increasingly used in the vehicle manufacturing
industry.
